Going a bit old school here, but try Veruca Salt (2 lead female vocals) - a bit punkier on it, but fantastic stuff. The Donnas are a good middle ground - all girls, heavily KISS influenced, pretty kickass. Hole deserves an honorable mention for their earlier stuff (Celebrity Skin still is a brilliant album, despite how anyone might feel about Courtney Love), The Muffs for their slightly comic attitude to things. Anyone else? umm.. Die Mannequin, Furslide, Juliette and The Licks, Lacuna Coil, Letters to Cleo, PJ Harvey, Rasputina, Spinerette.. Think that'll do it.
Ah, Veruca Salt, I was wondering when/if someone would mention them. They are part of the reason I made this post. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Just out of curiosity... why does it make a difference whether the band is all female or just female fronted? You can't tell the difference by listening so I just don't understand the importance of categorising the two......

OT: I think all of the ones I was going to mention have been said but i'll put them down anyway:
1)Nightwish
2)Evanescence
3)Within Temptation
4)Lacuna Coil

All of the above are female-fronted, not all female. (Seriously, please explain why the difference is so important to me).

No huge reason, curiosity for the most part. Another is that despite the fact there is no inherent difference in musical capability between men and women there still seems to be far fewer bands that are exclusively female then exclusively male.
Fair enough, was just curious whether there was some ulterior motive at play and I'd missed something xD

Yeah I know, there seem to be less females in the entire rock/metal/anything heavier or darker scene.

They're all girls, and really something different.

Big fan of Veruca Salt myself, highly recommended. Preferred Hole's Live through this, but celebrity skin was pretty good.
I'd also like to add a couple of Aussie acts, Lash and Blow Up Betty. Unfortunately, neither group appears to be terribly active these days, but they both put out some pretty decent songs.

So lately I have been looking for some good female rock bands. Any time period or genre as long as it fits into the rock meta-genre. For my purposes I am looking for bands that are exclusively female or at least fronted by a woman. If there are any albums you particularly like or think people should hear please suggest those as well. Thanks for the help!

Edit: Also can you let me know if they are composed entirely of female members or just fronted by one.
I recommend All Ends. Have a listen to them right [a href="http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Walk+Away/2vokhq"]here[/a]. Not the best band ever by any means, still sort of trying to find their style I think, but I like 'em and a lot of others I know of have already been recommended.

Also, give Lita Ford a listen. A lot of her early songs suck because of that guttural kind of sound a lot of 80's singers had, and she kinda' was selling on T&A value more than her actual talent, really had the subtlety of a fucking ox a lot of the time, but... well, just listen to [a href="http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/If+I+Close+My+Eyes+Forever/2Gw8Cf"]this[/a] and try to tell me she aint the rightful queen of heavy metal.

The Cranberries are great, but if you're looking for an all girl band - well I don't know.

Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead. A little different, sort of dark carnival metal. Ex Dillinger Escape Plan drummer and a girl singer who plays accordion too!

Girlschool, seen the supporting Motorhead several million times.

As for female led bands, check out Arch Enemy and Lacuna Coil.
Girlschool is a kickass band, well worth listening.
