I would like to know what are some good free to play games that I could play? I am a fan of strategy/4X/rpg/adventure/openworld type games. What games are there out there that I could play?

Hmmm, well, for free gaming fix, I do like to recommend Kongregate, might be flash games but some of them are really good.

Rebuild2 is a really neat zombie 4x game. Your people trying to rebuild a city in the middle of a zombie apoc. It's really neat because it has a really open game with a neat open story attached. Kind of a really good example of how you should do story in a open game.

The Ur-Quan Masters (a freeware Starcontrol 2)! It has some strategic elements, a galaxy map with alien empires, RPG bits, a few inventory item puzzles and you can go anywhere you want, so it fits the bill nicely.
Also nice full voice acting and cute retro gfx.

Also play Heroine's Quest. It's a free RPG/adventure a la Quest for Glory. Good stuff.

GTA 2 is free from Rockstar's own site [http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/] these days, and it's a reasonably fun game. Old, but fun.

Speaking of old, Robot Arena 2 is also freakin' awesome, and abandonware! Can't help you with a download link there though. There are lots of old games that are now free, and very playable. Depending on your OS you may need to fiddle with them a bit to get them to run though, Robot Arena 2 is by no means stable for me on Win 7.

Well, if you like strategy games there's always FreeCiv, which is pretty much a freeware version of Civilization 2. I tned to enjoy Dwarf Fortress, it's pretty fun to play and incredibly complex, although the controls are incredibly obtuse and it has a pretty steep learning cliff. But if you like 4X games and RPGs it might be worth a try.

If you like cyberpunk rpgs in the vein of Shadowrun, Syndicate or Deus Ex, you should give DataJack [http://epicbanana.com/] a try.

You can always browse Steam's F2P page [http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Free%20to%20Play/]. Building on the Strategy/RPG aspect of your post, you might consider getting into a MOBA like League of Legends or DotA2, they're usually free, and even the stuff you have to pay for can sometimes be unlocked through an in-game currency that you can grind-up. Or at least, I know that LoL lets you buy (mostly) everything with said currency.

Also, what do you mean when you say "4x" games?

If you like Diablo-esque ARPGs, 'Path of Exile' is really, really good. Just a warning that the difficulty curve is sort of insane in the final act (more of a difficulty plateau, really) but besides that it's a really well-done and interesting ARPG with some funky new mechanics.
