Does Netflix have J-Horrors? If they do I recommend Tale of Two Sisters and the Ring (not the crappy US remake).
Also Silent Hill is also pretty good and look for a horro movie called Phantoms (1998), now that is a scray film!

Recent release, I'd recommend Insidious
Older movie, The thing (1982) comes to mind at the moment.

I second these suggestions:
The Thing : Fantastic psychological thriller, the effects are starting to look a bit dated but it's still one hell of a brilliant film/

Alien/s: Don't need to say any more really, fantastic films. Suspense, horrifying monsters, claustrophobic sense, if you've played and like Dead Space you'll love these.

Event Horizon: Oh my God, it's so fucking good. Psychological horror at its finest.

Dog Soldiers: Not particularly scary, but it's an amazing film.

Outpost: Ghost nazi zombie...things. Don't need to say any more.

Some that haven't been said yet;

Hostage; not a straight up horror, but the second half is pretty scary, especially when things go tits up.

Kokoda: 39th Battalion, this is a war film about a malnourished squad of Australians against the Japanese on some island, it's quite obscure and low budget, but it's the most suspensful [and in some places outright scary] war film I've ever seen.

Also if you're feeling up for some jet black comedy, check out Dead Snow, a German film about nazi zombies, it has some of the most over the top gore and action I've seen. And it's a blast.

Asian Cinema is the way to really good modern modern horror.

R-Point.
A Tale of Two Sisters.
The Ring/The Grudge.
Three Extremes.
(There are loads more that are apparently good, but I haven't seen them myself so I wouldn't know).

But from everywhere else there's...

The Thing.
The Wicker Man (not the Nicholas Cage one, but watch that anyway because it's fucking hilarious).
Alien.
Halloween.
The Last Exorcism.
[REC]
Martyrs (Seriously check that out).
Deathwatch.

There are loads more, but my brain appears to be dead atm.

I've quite a few to recommend.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu
Hands of Orlac
Frankenstein (1931)
Dracula (Coppola version)
Alien
The Thing
Don't Look Now
Hellraiser
Phantom of the Opera (1925)
Eraserhead
The Shining
The Exorcist
Jacob's Ladder
The Haunting
Wicker Man (original)
The Mist
Rosemary's Baby
Let the Right One In
Psycho
Night of the Living Dead

I'll leave it there, I've likely forgotten quite a few...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vengeance_Trilogy Try them three, I remember an old users recommending them but I have only seen oldboy ... which is FUCKED UP! Like, you might need counseling after it.

As for some other people suggestions, are you kidding me?

Alien? Scary? Oh boy, I didn't even get scared at 8 years old.

The shining? Come on now, nothing happens in it.

Jaws? Aged really badly

28 days later, it was good but not scary.

The exorcist was a snooze fest.

I have seen a good number of horror films, I own a fair few as well (60 to be accurate) and the only one that made me jump is Quarantine, which I liked but I haven't seen [rec] so make what you will of that.

Some of the DVD's I own are the obvious, nightmare on elm street (just missing the re make) Friday the 13th (again missing the remake), childs play series, final destination's (except the 3D one), Hills have eyes, saw films, few zombie ones such as land of the dead.

Shame I can't find a genuinely scary film ...
