It ended a little while ago, but check out Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. That was one of the most creative, hilarious cartoons I've seen in years, and one of the only good shows on Cartoon Network during that generation.

Now, though, Adventure Time. Yeah, it plays the "OMG random! Lol penguins!" card a little bit too much, but otherwise it's pretty brilliant. Like one other poster said, it's one of those love-it-or-hate-it shows.

And just for a little laugh, check out Superjail! on Adult Swim. It's like the horribly violent, disturbing, completely twisted relative of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I am shocked and appalled that no one has yet mentioned Tom and Jerry,
and the looney tunes, but my favourites of them were Roadrunner, and Taz the Tazmanian Devil

Also Recess,
Hey Arnold,
Arthur,
Animaniacs.

Oh, and not strictly cartoons, but Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Stingray, and Postman Pat and Fireman Sam.

The-a-tha-a-the-a-tha-athats all for now folks

Seconded so incredibly much.

Also, Avatar is definitely worth a boxset purchase (hell, I might consider it one of the greatest works of animation within the past decades), and Adventure Time and Regular Show are worth checking out.

Though I am ambivalent to most of those shows up there, I'll vouch for that one. If I were to tell you that a cartoon about My Little Pony of all things was not only good, but smartly written, genuinely funny, had well defined characters, and was one of my favorite shows on TV these days, would you believe me? No, of course not. You'd be a fool to do so. You have to see it for yourself, friend, because such a thing has never happened before, so far as I know.

Also, some of my other favorite shows:

Adventure Time with Finn and Jake: Great humor, charming art style, and set in a bizzare fantasy world inspired by D&D and 8-bit video games. My #1 favorite show.

Chowder: This one used to be my favorite show before AT came along. The art direction is fantastic; a riot of color and variety. The humor, I feel, is not as good. Kind of cheesy, but still very nice.

Robotomy: Made by the same guys who did Superjail!, this series is also extremely violent, save with killer robots rather than humans. Kinda pushes the limit of what you can say on a kids show. Shame that it was cancelled after only 10 episodes.

Regular Show: Of all the ones I've listed, this one probably makes the least sense. Every episode follows Mordecai and Rigby, groundskeepers of a park (and an anthropomorphic bluejay and raccoon for no reason), being assigned to do some simple task, slacking off, and ending up awakening some monster or eldritch horror or rend in the time-space continuum. Dialogue's pretty snappy, too.

There was this one shot called Reboot, that I use to watch. From what I can remember it was pretty cool, sorry since I doubt that helped much.

Even though Avatar isn't on or showing, you should still watch it, it's excellent.

I'd also recommend Teen Titans, which probably isn't showing anymore either, but it looks like you enjoyed other DCAU works and Teen Titans is definitely worth hunting down.

I have but one single suggestion. Tom and Jerry. Not that new one where they freaking talked. I mean the classic one. From the 40's and 50's.
