I just picked up my DS again and my library is quite limited. I was wondering if you had any suggestions. I prefer RPGs (though I don't have preference for either Japanese or Western, they are both great)

Well... Pokemon is probably the best suggestion. I would also highly recommend Fire Emblem Awakening and Legend Of Zelda Link Between Worlds.

If you're looking for 3ds go for Bravely Default, old school JRPG job system goodness right there.

Like I say in everyone of these threads:

Fire Emblem awakening is my GotY of last year and is #3 on my favorite games of all time list. It is a really fun tactics rpg with amazing characters.

Monster Hunter 3 ultimate is a really fun game that is compromised of only boss fights

Pokemon X and/or Y is definately a good choice. I really enjoyed my time with these pokemon games.

Some titles to look forward to:
Monster Hunter 4 ultimate, Pokemon Omega Ruby and/or Alpha Sapphire, Super Smash Bros.

Your question is a little confusing. 2ds, or plain DS?

DS games I have:
Sim City DS
Pokemon Conquest (Imagine pokemon in a final fantasy Tactics style of gameplay, mixed with japanese warlords.)
I kinda suggest drawn to life.
I just picked up Sid meier's Civilization revolution (for $4.80 at gamestop :p), which is a dumbed down, but still fun Civs game that can be beaten in the course of a night at low difficulty. basically it's supposed to be more streamlined.

But if it's actually the 2ds, aka the 3ds without the 3d?

Project X-zone is really nice. It made me happy seeing familiar faces, and got me wondering about some of the unfamiliar ones.

Rune factory 4 is nice. Live action hack and slash with leveling up for nearly everything.

tomodachi life is kinda fun in a very light gameplay way. you can level up residents, and such.

I'm not sure where Style Savvy trendsetters falls into as a genre, but it's pretty rewarding, and you expand your arsenal bit by bit. If you can get past the girly theme, it's a rewarding game.

Zelda Four Swords Anniversary edition was free at one time.

Senran Kagura Burst is good. It has character growth, unlocking stuff, etc. but is a side scrolling brawler. Under all that fanservice is a good game with some oddly good writing.

Scribblenauts in general is good. I liked Unmasked for the joys of reading bios, and stuff.

Samurai Warriors Chronicles is nice. Some leveling up to be done, some weapon enhancement stuff, lots to unlock, and it's got a lot of that Koei Warriors series feel in gameplay.

Sims 3 pets is, well, a sims game. :p You can even build a home, though it's not as rich a building system as PC, or even most console releases.

I'm trying to be a little unconventional in my suggestions, mind you. Of course there's the pokemons, and fire emblems, and so forth.

RPGs, eh?
*sees he's been ninja'd more than once at times*
Dammmit!
Oh wait...
*double-checks*

Well, there's Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance for the 3DS/2DS... and there's Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded for the DS, only I like 358/2 Days slightly more than the cinematic movie version in Kingdom Hearts 1.5 on the PS3 while the latter I personally like despite others really not liking this game on more than just on a story-telling level...

Other than that... You can't go wrong with the suggestions that have already been mentioned...

Not an RPG, but...

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is brilliant!
I cannot recommend it enough.

I've been playing Mario 3D land really good game (untill you get the Tanooki suit of shame)

It's such a fun game that I've noticed myself grinning like a kid whitest playing it, might be the best game I've played this year.
The problem with this is that it may be difficult on a 2DS. Most of the levels would be ok, but some of the puzzles are practically impossible without the 3D mode!

RPGs I would recommend would be Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem! If you like SRPGs of course!
Other than that go for Golden Sun, the Mario and Luigi RPGs (really quite fun) and if you haven't played it before, Chrono Trigger!

And then there is Bravely Default. Seriously good game, and a stunning RPS for the 2/3DS! Definitely worth getting!

A non-3D DS
Well that's bloody confusing. You do know there's a version of the 3DS with its 3D taken out called the 2DS, right? Pretty much everyone will think you're talking about 3DS games.

OT: I'd recommend Super Mario 64, Pokemon Platinum/HeartGold, and if you like Viva Pinata then the DS version is actually pretty good.

In that case, I will go by experience.

Warioware Touched! is a Warioware game, and they deserve to be experienced.
Advance Wars Dual Strike is a nifty strategy game, highly recommended.
Ghost Trick is a well-written but fairly linear puzzle game, for cheap it's ace.
Trauma Center

You can still get the Etrian Odyssey 1-3, if that takes yer fancy.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. And/or Castlevania: Circle of the Moon for the GBA if your DS is an original or DSLite.

They're not the best games in the series (though CotM is close) but they're great games most RPG fans should love anyway. Even if their RPG mechanics aren't that deep. I would definitely recommend Aria of Sorrow as well though it'll be more expensive.
