I didn't skip the system and played through a lot of good games for the thing, but I know I missed a lot. For example, one of the games I'm looking for currently is the Pheonix Wright series. Sounded amazing then, sound amazing now. But I completely skipped them.

So what other games are like hallmarks and must plays of the DS library? I'm not going to be getting them all at once, but I'll probably keep an eye out when I'm game shopping. Probably 2 at a time.

[edit]

Since someone asked, my DS consoles are DSlite, DSi and 3DS, so pretty much everything's fair game. guess some stuff from the DSi/virtual console would work too. Some of that stuff looks kinda fun. So if there is a game you tried out and thought it was fantastic, throw it in the mix as well.

Could you give us some idea of what you played so that we aren't constantly recommending games you've already tackled? Off the top of my head:

The World Ends With You
Okamiden
Chrono Trigger
Ghost Trick
Professor Layton series

A really good DS game that pops into my mind is "999" and "the world ends with you".

Well, this'll give you an idea: I haven't played any of those. I figured that me making a list of 3 or 4 games would not be worth the effort.

Disgaea is amazing. The amount of items and the story itself is great. If you like JRPG's that's on your list for sure.

Strange Journey and Devil Survivor, both are excellent with the later havening some of the best atmosphere in a game, I genuinely felt down(in a good way) after playing it. The fomor plays like Pokemon except replacing cute mons with various mythological figures

Pokemon Soul Silver/Heart Gold. Better than Black/white. Even if your new to pokemon, its' still very very good.

I mostly finished Black. I've only ever played Pearl and Black so I was wondering what's so good about Soul Silver/Heart Gold? Aren't they remakes of Silver and Gold?

What kind of DS do you have? Don't forget to check out Gameboy Advance games if that's an option for you (it is for me).

I'm only now just starting to get into my DS. But I can recommend a few:

...nevermind, just listen to this guy:

I can give a game to avoid: Metroid Prime Hunters. I have so much hate for that game. You fight the same two bosses three or four times each. The controls are awkward too. Screw Other M, this is the worst Metroid game.

Let see (excluded what the people above me had said already)-

Infinite Space
Hotel Dust and Last Window (However this is not for everyone but I love the detective stories.)
Rhythm Paradise (This could put you off since it's quite hard for a rhythm game.)
Dragon Quest IX
Golden Sun Dark Dawn
Advance Wars DS
Professor Layton series

Ignore the recommendation for Okamiden. You're better off sticking to the original Okami, Okamiden is just a cheap cash in.

Anyway, Contact is an obscure one, but if you can find it it's pretty good. If you have a DS that can play GBA games you should stick with the prequels and avoid Golden Sun and Fire Emblem titles on the DS, but i've heard good things about Professor Layton.
The Ace Attorney series is also fairly good, Rune Factory 3 isn't that bad if you like RPG/Sim games, and i've heard the first Disgaea was ported to the DS, and that is one worth checking out if you haven't already played it. Also The World Ends with You is overrated in my mind, but still worth checking out simply for the absurdity of it all.

I've got DSlite, DSi and 3DS, so yup, everything's fair game, but I'd rather limit this to the DS library.

The GBA library would an entirely other can of worms.

Someone already recommended Chrono Trigger and professor Layton, so I will be the one to recommend the 2 Zelda games for the platform. They are both pretty good entries in their series and will both give you at least 25-40 hours of entertainment depending on how many sidequests you do.

Also, the FF4 is really well done, but very difficult, so be prepared.

Some games I like are the Mario & Luigi series, there the Mega Man Zero Collection, Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent, Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Black, and White. there are others but that's just what comes to mind right now.

Not sure what you are interested in but for me I like:

Simcity DS
Advanced War: Dual Strike
Advacned War: Days of Ruin
Steel Horizon
Panzer Tactics

And the ultimate: Infinite Space

Took 40 hours rushing through to beat it, several billion ways to modify your ships, excellent story line and charaters, and some actually rather difficalt parts to it, like that finally boss whos ships is 1 mile long, 2 miles tall, and 5 miles wide, and has a blackhole cannon as its main gun.

Castlevania - best Castlevania's ever other than SOTN (Metroidvania)
fixed that for you
OT: Mario and Luigi Bowser's inside story is one of the best turn based rpgs on the system.
