Well, I have few games I'd like to mention, both older and newer, so here goes:

- Fate of the World: A TBS, where the ultimate goal is to lead our planet through enviromental and ecomonic problems and on to a better future. While the game has a certain left-wing bias, I still think it's quite a good game and seeing as the data in the game comes from the real world, it's quite educational as well.

- Eufloria/Oil Rush: They're actually two games, but they're similar in the way the play. They're both RTS, but they're more RTS-lite, than anything else, because the building of units is automatic and spawns from nodes you fight over in the game. Oil Rush is the deeper and more challenging of the two, but Eufloria was the one that introduced me to this type of game, so I heartily recommend both.

- Hydrophobia: Prophecy: I know this game got a hell of a lot of flak when it first came out and from what I've read, deservedly so. After that, the developers redid 70%(I think?) of the game, making it a much, much better experience. It's short and the water powers is introduced way too late in the game, but it's not a bad game and water really is beautifully simulated and the powers to manipulate them work quite well.

- Solar 2: Going from being a tiny rock in a big univser to becoming a black hole and consuming everything in it, is what this game is all about. There are stages inbetween the two, of course and additional challenges at each stage, along with cheats and additional game modes. A fun little game, that I haven't heard mentioned a whole lot.

Now, those three games above are newer games, but I also have some older games:

- Moho: A futuristic games where you play a robot imprisoned for his/her crimes and the only way you're getting out, is to complete a series of challenges, including race, last man standing, running gauntlets and so on. I've had a lot of fun with it, both growing up, but also in newer times. It's a pain getting it to run though. I still haven't gotten it to succesfully run in Windows 7, only XP, sadly.

- Lode Runner 2: A sequel to the 2d Lode Runner games, this one has a isometric view instead, changing the gameplay quite a bit, though it's still a Lode Runner game at its core. The added dimension makes the levels a lot more expansive. The AI isn't the best though, but does provide a challenge, if you're setting time records.

- Desert Strike: In this game, you control a helicopter, again from a isometric perspective. You have differing goal, depending on the mission, but most of them include either rescuing people, escorts and blowing things up. Quite fun and not the only game in the series, just the only one I've played.

I have more recommendations than the above, but I thought I'd stop for now. All of the above games are ones I've played extensively and enjoyed a lot, so having them introduced to more people would be great.

Eh, it's not really under-appreciated as just about everyone who ever played it loves it, but you owe it to yourself to give Bad Mojo a whirl.

Also Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, available on GOG.

If you like shooters, then I would give Binary Domain from Sega a go. Great, futuristic Tokyo setting.

And Valkyrie Profile 2 for the PS2. Back when Square knew how to make games.

I know I could google this but I am lazy, is that similar to "Soviet Strike". I had that on the PS1, it was hard from what I remember.
Very varied missions though

Since I actually read the OP and knows he wants PC only...
E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy is rather unappreciated. By myself as well, since I haven't installed it, even though I own it. Jim Sterling loved it, though.
2008 Prince of Persia is on PC, and a really good game. I don't know why everyone hates it.
Serious Sam 3: BFE is a great shooter if you like them old school, and really isn't talked about much.
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is a classic PC FPS with one nice gimmick: You're a transforming mech. That should speak volumes.
Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone was a fun hack n slash that was on PS2, Xbox, and PC.
Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator is a western-made, PC exclusive jRPG, and a pretty good one at that.
Every game I listed is on either Steam or GOG.com
Some of those sound pretty interesting(especially the mech one, for obvious reasons), but yeah, the main reason people didn't like 2008 PoP was because, as a normal game it was enjoyable, but if you judged it as a Prince of Persia game it was pretty bad. It was a Prince of Persia game of course, so it was judged as such.

I just realized you specified PC and since I can't delete my post I'll just say sorry about that and maybe you could do the original Fable. It seems to get shunned alongside its less than stellar sequels and I know a lot of people didn't know what Fable was until Fable 2 happened.

in an attempt to kinda do like Unskippable, except gameplay is included, and not as funny(Modesty or Truth? Truth, probably truth).
Going by their Atelier Meruru video that I was unfortunate enough to click on, that's probably not difficult. I did like their older stuff way back when they first started, maybe they're just bad with JRPGs.
That's ok, there have been a few comments that missed it, but you raise an interesting point with Fable, while it is good, most don't know about it because of the shit sequels. Guess it kinda does deserve attention.
Their quality tends to wildly fluctuate, it's practically impossible to find someone who can say with a straight face that all episodes, or even most episodes, of Unskippable are consistently good/bad/average.

Nik: Have you tried might and magic?
Internetguy: oh that game by Ubisoft?
Nik *rageface* WHYyyyyyyyy 3do.. whyyyyyy
It's funny, because my first thought when someone mentions Might and Magic is the orignal series. 7 is actually still on my computer.

Ok, if we're ignoring the rule about it being a PC game;

Gotcha Force

Just because I want to watch you squirm as you learn about it and try to find it and find out the lowest price online for a 9 year old Gamecube game is about 22 quid, and near 100 at the highest.

MWAHAHAHAHAHA
MWAHAHAHAHAHA to you, I still have Gotcha Force!

Battle Zone, not the wire frame arcade one the other one that was the prequel to Battlezone2 by Pandemic. That game had a great story a pretty awesome game mechanics going on. It was half FPS (in a tank) and half RTS. I dont think there has been a game like it since.

Yea, it's the same series and the same basic gameplay, but since there are 4 years between the two games, there are some noticeable differences. Soviet Strike has newer graphics. I hesitate to call them better, because I think the graphics of Desert Strike has its own charm, despite Soviet Strike going for a more realistic look. Soviet Strike also has a much more helpful UI, but regardless of what you prefer, they're still fun games.

NetHack. Because you'll never believe how much game can be had from the extended ASCII character set.

(If you like/want to try city builders) Anno 1404, Children of the Nile. These represent the high points of the genre post-2000.

Monster Hunter Tri. Hook yourself up with Dolphin Emulator, a Bluetooth controller, and a copy of the Wii game, and have fun!

I've been debating LPing Robotrek for the SNES...It's not a game I would suggest other people PLAY, because its plot is so engrishy it's nigh impossible to figure out what to do at times, and despite starting out with lots of apparent flexability, it ends up with only one real way to 'do' things.

Be hillarious to LP though...an example of the dialog here.

Female Villain: You've stopped me too long, now I have a powerful robot! You know what happens when you make her mad!

Just checked its Wikipedia page, that game looks fucking epic!

NetHack, that brings back memories, traumatic memories, but memories none the less. Speaking as a fan of the series, I don't think Monster hunter Tri is all that good, though it's hard to find a concrete reason. I prefer to play Unite, because it has more, and I don't mean more quests(which wouldn't be fair because Unite was Freedom 2 with a shit ton more quests), but things like weapon types, and in my opinion better monsters. I do like the underwater combat though. They should expand upon it.

Evochron Mercenary. Behind the (very) steep learning curve is a hell of a rewarding space sim.

That's all I've got for now. I'll edit this post if I think of more.
YES, totally agree with this one. Even though I still haven't been able to do anything in it.
Learning curve like a brick-wall.

I always felt that the Culcept series never was really appreciated here in the states as much as it should have been. It had releases on both the PS2 and Xbox 360 but they never really took off or found much of an audience sadly.

As for the game it's self it was best described as Magic: The Gathering mixed with Monopoly. To this day it's one of my favorite games.

I thought Neir was good, if somewhat baffling. The graphics were pretty awful but the music was awesome. The story was bizarre but I couldn't stop playing until I had finished it.
Yeah I was just about to mention Nier. I saw all the negative reviews and avoided it for awhile even though it looked interesting. One day I saw it for a decent price so I said screw it I'm buying it. I ended up loving the game so much. I have no clue why it gets such a negative reception.

The two cons I've seen reviews talk about are completely stupid if you ask me. The first one is the main character is ugly looking. Seriously?

The 2nd was complaints about the OPTIONAL side quests being tedious fetch tasks.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto was woefully under advertised for such an excellent game. Though the first 30 minutes don't really show how good it gets - I think the second mission or so is when you get a JETPACK. Plus the cutscenes later on are comedic gold.

Hostile Waters. Released in 2001. Praised to heaven by the critics, but no-one bought it. But it's brilliant. It's an action/strategy game. You have several teammates to order around and you can pilot a unit yourself.
