Freedom planet has to be up there.
It did the sonic mania thing before sonic mania was a thing and did it better.

Probably Symphony of the Night & other of the 2D Castlevania's.

Some of the Rayman games are great too.

I liked Freedom Planet quite a bit. It's a really good game in it's own right. The visuals are charming, the music's good, the action's fun and it's fast paced. It's pretty great, and does have a lot of the same traits I like in the Sonic series. But it's no Sonic Mania to me - not at all.

Freedom Planet feels much more combat oriented than Mania - with all the different moves, and being much less simple - and the physics aren't nearly as good or fun to play around with as they are in Mania or other classic Sonic games. Freedom Planet is obviously Sonic-inspired and very similar, but it's different too, enough to not feel like a real Sonic game.

So, while I liked Freedom Planet, it's absolutely not a "Better Sonic" like people hyped it up to be and said to me before I played it.

Half-Genie Hero is the only one I've played a lot of, and it is fantastic. It has only a few stages and a lot of back-tracking as you unlock new abilities but the music, animation, writing, and gameplay are all fantastic. The only thing I don't love about that game is the "Friends till the End" DLC which has you play as Bolo, Rotty, and Sky and they all are quite poo and there are a few sections that are just plain dickish. The worst part is where you have to climb up a tower while running from giant worm who acts as a kill-plane. It was at that spot in the FttE DLC that I quit the game. It was annoying with Shantae, annoying when playing as Risky, but utterly obnoxious with the trio. There are a few sections that are annoying, but most of the game is great.
Eh, it's generally seen as inferior to Pirate's Curse. Also, there's a brand new DLC thing that apparently has you going through the same stages yet again, though I haven't played it yet.

Personally, I think the latest Rayman games are quite good.

Does Ori and the Bling Forest count? 'cause if so, Ori and the Bling Forest...
I just googled this - it looks interesting. Is it a metroidvania type thing?
Yeah, and also pretty good.

Why would you need to exclude Sonic titles? Isn't that like saying who's the best chef of all time besides Guy Feiri?
Sonic has always been an Also-ran.

Because classic Sonic and Mario are too obvious and I know them too well. I don't agree with that anyway. It is now, but it wasn't the case in the Mega Drive era, which is what I was talking about really. That's when his popular 2D titles were around, except Mania which is basically a homage to those games.

I don't think you guys are giving Sonic enough credit. Even if you don't like the games, Sonic is one of the only platformer series that is still going in any kind of steady state. Apart from him and Mario, can any of the platformer series be said to be going steady? Scouring through this thread and being generous, I could say Shantae, Mega Man, Kirby, and Freedom Planet, though it's yet to even receive its second game, and even then, does two games really constitute a "series?" That's a pretty small selection compared to how many platformer series have been active in the past.

Even if we're confining this entirely to 2D outings, there were plenty of 2D Sonic games post-16 bit era. Even if I'd rank the 16-bit games above them as an aggregate, the 16-bit era is still dragged down by STH1 & CD, whereas the more recent ones have stuff like the Rush duology, not to mention the reasonably solid Advance trilogy.

Is this supposed to be aimed at me or Souplecx? I love the Sonic series dude - I own every game and there's are only a few 3D ones I actively don't like - I was simply arguing the case for the most well regarded ones in the context of his comment.

Mostly Souplecx. Only included "you guys" as you mentioned "his popular 2D titles." Which is kind of nitpicky, I get what you mean, but it touches on what's irritated me about how people view the series - first there was no good Sonic game before Colours, then there was no good Sonic game before Generations, then (as of Forces), there was no good Sonic game after the 2D era, etc. Even Mania seems to have got in on the bandwagon with it declaring "the return of 2D Sonic!"...except 2D Sonic never left. I get that it's more accurate to say that it's a return to the 16-bit mechanics, which subsequent 2D titles didn't emulate fully, but, yeah.

This is kind of a different discussion but if it makes you feel better, I like most (non-spin off) Sonic games except, Shadow, 06 and Secret Rings. Not that keen on Forces either as I felt like I wasn't really doing much to beat the levels. The rest are ok to excellent in my eyes. But I'm aware not everyone thinks that so I was trying to keep the argument on topic and for people who have it etched into their brains. I think it's best to remind them how good the originals and Mania are, because (a) those ARE his best 2D ones - in my opinion - and (b) people forget how popular he was in the 16-bit era and that he was a genuine Mario competitor in the world's eyes. Otherwise you get into a whole different debate about the quality of the series as a whole.
