I'm the head researcher for a small military museum and one of my little projects when I'm not writing endless research papers on the various artifacts is setting up a flight simulator so the airmen of the museum can relive some of their former glory or enjoy watching me fly. Currently the only real flight sim I have is IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 which is amazing but elderly. What I'm looking for would be more Vietnam War era, something where you can zip around in an F-4 phantom. Something graphically more impressive than IL-2 would also help, it hasn't exactly aged well.

It doesn't have an F4 module but DCS world is a good one. It is the most well known for its A-10, though you have a bunch of other ones you can get. Flaming Cliffs 3 is a campaign and a collection of simpler planes, though it also has full priced full sims with vitural cockpits that have full button control. For Vietnam era, you have migs, and an F-5 looking at the list right now.

The Falcon collection is on GOG, it comes with Falcon 4.0 which can me modded with the Falcon BMS (I think that is what it is called) which improves it to the level of one of those DCS modules.

From what I know I do not think a modern F4 sim is out there.

I'm actually really curious about this too. Can Microsoft Fight Simulator do combat scenarios with mods?

Il-2 has a bunch of mods that help modernise it and add loads more players planes, eras etc. The one i know of is CUP, or Community Universal Patch. Has everything from WW1 planes through to the modern era. It's a bit of a bugger to install though, coming in several dozen parts and a not so helpful guide.
