Sweet Home on the NES and FAMICOM

god it felt like a masterpiece

and it was pretty original, I mean, it's the only RPG I know that isn't about magic and pixies and swords and shit

I put in my vote for the Legend of Dragoon
I'm playing that now, it's neat. My friend had the same problem with several different games though, so you're not alone with the disk issue.

Otherwise, the Shadow Hearts series. LOVE.

Might and Magic? It had like 9 games. (Yes 9 i wont count Dark Messiah -Ubisoft)

Actually make that 8... The 9nth sucked.. Bad.

It was an epic rpg that created awesome things like Archimage and Heroes of Might and Magic :p

Not to say that it was a big world where you could do whatever you want. Drag a dragon to a village and make it slaughter everyone? "Go get em'boy"... Must say though.. I dont think its aged too well ;(. But i believe it just as good as any of the more known series.. Like Elder Scrolls. And Eye of the Beholder.

Every time i mention Might and Magic everyone around me goes. I dont like turn based stradegy. I almost rage every time..
Feel free to rage. If there weren't turn based strategy games, then there wouldn't be any Advance Wars games. That would truly be a travesty.
I do in some cases find TBS more easy to deal with. Taking time with turns and not being rushed after five minutes can be.. Relaxing.
I hear ya. I have spent many lazy days playing TBS games, particularly any of the Advance Wars games and Heroes of Might and Magic III.

Darklands
DSA Nordlandtriologie - Realms of Arkania 1-3 ((The Dark Eye); (the newer Drakensang games are also well made)
Temple of Elemental Evil (with Fan Patches only, really good Combat System)
more of genre mix but check out UnReal World, if you can get into Indy Games with some depth

well known in the past but now more and more forgotten:

Gold Box series (SSI)
Shadowrun on snes and Sega (both were really good)
BattleTech 1: The Crescent Hawk's Inception
System Shock
Wasteland
every Infinity Engine game...

I'll say Titan Quest. It's a hack-n-slash RPG, a game very much like Diablo II. but relatively unknown. Most of what I've read about Diablo III; I've already seen in Titan Quest.

I put in my vote for the Legend of Dragoon, (although I only got through the first disc because the rest were messed up.)and Enchanted Arms..... No, really. These are the only two jrpg's i have ever loved.
I loved Legend of Dragoon and most RPGs that werent named Final Fantasy for PS. Chrono Cross, and Wild Arms 2 were my favorites along with Dragoon

EDIT: Oh and welcome to the Escapist!
I was never huge on cutscenes although the Wild Arms series always had pretty cool ones, like this. (I beat WA2 although I could never figure out how to unlock that one girls cybernetic abilities beyond lvl 1).

Ofcourse theres still rushing in TBS.. I remember trying to build up an economy in Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Then 2 months in a Dungeonlord storms me with black dragons. I was like "SAYWUUUUUUT?!"

I guess Nier was fairly unknown and rather underrated...
It's also totally awesome and one of my favorite games of the year...<.<

I'm going with Quest 64, one of my all-time favorite games.

It seems like very few people have heard of it, and then four fifths of those who have are only familiar with the unjustified bashing it got when it came out (that's what it gets for having the expectation of being the N64's RPG savior placed upon it, I guess).

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Of course it's obscure - it's right there in the name.

Planescape: Torment... isn't exactly obscure, is it? Okay, never mind that. Terranigma's one, and a little way behind it, Treasure of the Rudras.

Has anyone heard of those last two? Anyone?

8D I love Chrono Cross, but sadly never find that many people that have played it. Have you ever played Chrono Trigger. I would put both of those as my answer.

You chose my pick! Monster! :p J/K

...I also recommend the Atelier Iris series: a good blend of item creation and turn based combat.

and Legend of the Dragoon was delicious.

EDIT: OH! and Drakengard! Dark, awesome storyline with quirky characters...and Dragons ^^

Well I hate to be one of those unjustified bashers, but I played several hours desperately trying to like it back in the day and thought it was total crap.

Anyway, a few of mine:

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. It's hard to describe what makes this game so magical. Is it the deep and personal quest? The fantastic and fulfilling conclusion? Brilliant music by Yasunori Mitsuda? Or maybe it's the massive variety the game displays in locals despite all taking place underground? Ooh, and then there's the deeply strategic combat system, survival mechanics which work well (once you get used to them), humorous side mission involving giant ants and the unrelenting yet very satisfying difficulty.

In short, I am a Dragon Quarter whore, apparently.

Recently I've been playing FFV Advance. I only suggest this because it was only available in the US in the Advance release, and despite being Final Fantasy it's more lighthearted and gameplay-focused. There's more of a classic questing feel here. I realize it's FF, but it was Japan-only FF until 2006, so I'm giving it a mention.

Xenogears does indeed have the BEST STORY EVER. Well, I can't be sure until I play Planescape (my gaming comp died and this crappy laptop probably can't even run games that old).

Finally, Valkyrie Profile 2 is a beautiful game everyone should experience, especially fans of high fantasy and Norse gods. Oh, and brief shout out to Persona 3 and 4 (P3 has the better story), although they aren't really underrated or unknown.

I'm currently on an RPG kick, so I'll be watching this topic with interest.

I know it's well known, but I just had to stop by and say that King's Quest VI is the greatest game ~evar! (Not really, but it holds a special place in my heart. <3)

Alternatively: I have No Mouth and I Must Scream is one of the coolest point and click games I can think of off the top of my head. (The book isn't bad either.)
Isn't that the one with the chick that has the Green Lantern's weakness?

I have fond memories of the Genesis port of "Starflight."

I miss the original Dungeon Siege...I it miss it dearly.

It was basically a prettier version of Diablo but it was great.
