Really dont know how unknown it is (but since lack of a sequel helps in that catagory). My favorite game of all time is Skies of Arcadia.

I've heard good things about the Persona series, particularly Persona 3: FES.
Really? Shin Megami Tensei is considerably over-shadowed by the likes of FF, but it still has a huge following and is pretty well known in JRPG/Animu circles. Infact, Persona 3 is one of the most famouse JRPGs.

...quite a few games by Nippon Ichi particularly Soul Nomad and the World Eaters
You chose my pick! Monster! :p J/K

...I also recommend the Atelier Iris series: a good blend of item creation and turn based combat.

and Legend of the Dragoon was delicious.

EDIT: OH! and Drakengard! Dark, awesome storyline with quirky characters...and Dragons ^^
Hm I might try those

I'm going with Quest 64, one of my all-time favorite games.

It seems like very few people have heard of it, and then four fifths of those who have are only familiar with the unjustified bashing it got when it came out (that's what it gets for having the expectation of being the N64's RPG savior placed upon it, I guess).
Recently I've been playing FFV Advance. I only suggest this because it was only available in the US in the Advance release, and despite being Final Fantasy it's more lighthearted and gameplay-focused. There's more of a classic questing feel here. I realize it's FF, but it was Japan-only FF until 2006, so I'm giving it a mention.
Actually Final Fantasy V was released outside of Japan as part of Final Fantasy Anthology on the PS1 in the US during 1999 with FFVI and in PAL reigions during 2002 with FFIV.
Brilliant game though.

I loved...Chrono Cross...
8D I love Chrono Cross, but sadly never find that many people that have played it. Have you ever played Chrono Trigger. I would put both of those as my answer.
Yeah I played Chrono Trigger but I never got close to actually beating it and don't remember too much about it. Plus Chrono Trigger is a lot more well known than its sequel

I'm currently on an RPG kick, so I'll be watching this topic with interest.
Then might I recommend the SRPG "Record of Agarest War" ("Agarest: Generations of War" in Europe). Huge game. Deep combat/combo system. Assign points at level up. Cultivate relationships to create the next generation's character (status, abilities, weapon type).
Sounds good, although last time I bought an SRPG, it was Stella Deus and I got burned hard on that one. Well, not that it's BAD, just... No, Stella Deus kind of is bad. The story is horrible, voice acting is crap and the action rewards passive behavior and a lack of movement (moving is punished-move too much and you can't even attack that turn).

Anyway, Record of Agarest War looks interesting, even if I can't say the title without thinking of either Record of Lodoss War or Heroic Legend of Arislan.

Chrono Cross is great as a game, and it would be awesome if taken as being unrelated to the first. The problem with CC is that while the music, graphics, and gameplay are excellent, nay, brilliant, the characters are largely a cast of unknowns we have no reason to care about, there are too many characters with too little differentiating them, the story is a garbled mess, to the extent a trio of brats at the end have to FREAKING MONOLOGUE THE ENTIRE PLOT so we understand what the crap is happening (I call them the spoiler kids, and nowadays I refer to every instance of this terrible, terrible form of plot exposition with the same name) and... Um... Well, isn't that enough? Presentation and gameplay are top notch, but the story really lets the whole thing down.

I mean, even if you really, really like CC's story, you've got to admit to yourself you probably hate at least half the characters, right? Or that maybe 3/4ths of them are incidental to the main events and should have been reduced to NPCs? What good is variety of the fake, "more of the same" kind? Why do I want 10 different water magic users when Chrono Trigger gave me 1 that I cared about?

I like CC. It's one of my favorite PS1 games. But sometimes it's not easy to overlook how dumb it can get at times. Every time Korcha and his family show up, I want to expose my brains to sunlight via a power drill.

Grandia series. Best battle system in any RPG I've ever played. 2 is the peak of the series, but 1 and 3 are well worth your time. Whenever 4 comes out its a day one purchase for me.

This thread leaves me confused about how you determine what a non-well known rpg is. Does that mean one that doesn't have a big following? Not mainstream? or not well-known tothe people who primarily play rpgs? I was thinking the last the one, but that doesn't work for most of those posted so far.

I mean, if you primarily play rpgs and haven't heard of the Shin Megami games, Wild Arms, Suikoden, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Valkyrie Profile, or Shadow Hearts, you should be shot.

Anyway, I'm going to go with Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled. It received fairly negative reviews, and I'm not sure why. Fun little game.

I completely agree about there being way too many useless, dumb characters. Throughout the game my party rarely gets use out of anyone anyone other than Kid, Leena, Guile, Glenn, Fargo, Norris, or Karsh, but the amount of useless characters doesn't really bother me. The only part of that game that I absolutely hate is when you 1st get turned into Lynx, it gets better eventually but until you get Fargo I really want to just punch something

Arc the Lad. That game was so amazing. I miss my turn-based little buddies. :(
Agreed, Amazing series of jrpgs that would really stick to ya, though arc the lad three was a little jarring when it came to the themes of darkness, it was still fun

I might flogged for this, but I liked Legend of Legaia way back in the age of the PS1

Shining Force on the Genesis was good.

Otherwise, Divine Divinity is one of my favorite RPG. Think Diablo, but with interesting quests and locations and a more involved storyline.
