Saints Row 2
Burnout Paradise
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

All those games are a lot of fun, quite cheap, and not too hard to play.

forget that and go with, borderlands, final fantasy 13, gta 4 or red dead(same thing), guitar hero(or if you wanna be stingy rockband), a silent hill game(idk), Modern Warfare 2, at least one halo, and hell why not viva pinata?; i would recomend playing with several genres until you fall into your niche

Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach are easy to pick up and play, and good games to boot. Word of warning, read up on the backstory first or they won't make the slightest bit of sense. I've also heard good things about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare if you like the kind of game where you die easily (2, not so much).

Other than that, the Mass Effect games are both very good for the Xbox 360.

Well depending on whether you've already played in on PC or not, I highly recommend the orange box. 5 games in one, and the 5 are some of the best games ever. Also its 3 years old (at least I think its 3) so you should get it pretty cheap

As for others I'd say;

Dead Rising
Monday Night Combat (arcade)
Beautiful Katamari (WHY DO MORE PEOPLE NOT HAVE THIS!)
Call of Duty 2 (my pesonal favourite CoD game)

What did I get when I first got my 360.......

Halo 3, Orange Box, Devil May Cry 4, Gears of War, GRAW, and Alone in the Dark XD. At least half of those aren't suitable for noobs XD

For a new 360 gamer. I recommend:
1.Halo 3
2.Fallout 3
3.The Orange Box
4.Bioshock
5.Crackdown (just for variety!)

Halo's a no brainer. Fallout 3 is worth every penny you spend on it due to the fact it's a huge game. The Orange Box is 5 stellar games in one package, leaving you with great value for money. Bioshock is a masterpiece in game design, and Crackdown is a bit of crazy fun :D Also, where I come from, they are all dirt cheap used, or even new, so they're great starters for anyone. :D (I come from the UK)

Well, my personal choices would be:

Halo Reach (Although if you haven't played any previous games, you probably won't understand it)

Assassin's creed II (But again, you need to have played the first one if you want it to make sense)

Mass effect 1 and 2

The Orange Box

Fable 2

Oblivion

Fallout 3 (or NV, which I heard is better anyways)

Crackdown

and go download Castle Crashers. It really is a lot of fun.

Bioshock (although I prefer the gameplay of the second but the story is really tacked on)
Call Of Duty 4 (great campaign)
Gears Of War

Sandbox
GTA 4 (complete) -- some serious game play faults but three compelling stories and lots of side missions
Saints Row 2 -- the other GTA IV concentrating on pure fun
Assassin's Creed 2 -- once you accept the sci-fi premise and get past the tutorial levels it's amazing
Prototype -- just for pure carnage.

Batman: Arkyham Asylum -- more of a fighting/stealth game that I can't lump in with any other. Stealth is actually tons of fun except on those missions where you can't be seen.

I played World of Goo and didn't understand it. If you must, get the PC or Wii version because they inevitably have more responsive pointer controls(same goes for Puzzle Quest, Max & the Magic Marker and pretty much any game based around moving a cursor).

The Xbox 360 being the only current console I don't have access to, I'd say Crackdown is the only game besides possibly Child of Eden that would make me consider buying one.

All of these have been mentioned atleast once on this thread but I might as well back them up:

1. Fallout 3
2. Bioshock
3. Fable 2
4. Halo 3
5. Call of Duty 4

All a couple of years old so cheap but all masterpieces in their own way.

-Red Dead Redemption: You don't even need to know how to aim, the freaking game does it for you, and if the enemy still get's the jump on you you can freeze time and pick them off.

The game is so easy it's disappointing...=(

-Fallout 3: Some fans even try playing this game by their own rules, if they die once they have to start over from the beginning. The funny thing is the game's difficulty is situational, 98% of the time it's easy cheesy, although for that last 2% the difficulty can ramp up 5,000%. For instance when you just so happen to cross the path of a Deathclaw, a Super Mutant, Enclave, Raiders, and those damn giant crabs, all at the same time.

I'd start with Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption, Bayonetta, Gears of War and Bioshock. As each game leads onto another that you can carry on. And they're cheap as chips.

If there was ever such a thing as a 360 Starter Pack, those are the games.

The 2008 Prince of Persia game is great for newcomers. Its a relatively painless, pretty enjoyable experience.

You could probably get it for cheap used.

I also suggest Fable 2, easy to play and fairly enjoyable. If you avoided Moleneux's hype at least.

Resident Evil 5 is also on the list.

All games are about a year or more old and you could find them for cheap. Used or otherwise.
Disagree with both Resident Evil 5 and Prince of Persia. Even with the constant help if you fall in Prince of Persia I still found the game frustrating in a rental. Resident Evil 5's demo seemed extremely frustrating.

Fable 2 is a fun and easy game though.

Also, someone recommended Dead Rising? WTF That game's saving system from what I read seems extremely fucking frustrating.
As said before, the RE5 demo didn't do it justice. Its a lot easier and less frustrating then the demo. Well the menu system is kind of frustrating, but thats about it.

As for PoP, eh, everyone seems to have a different experience from that game. I found it easy and enjoyable, others found it boring and simple, some like you found it frustrating. Pretty interesting actually.

It's on the Wii too, and Mac (some people choose not to include it with PC).

Since you're looking for some older games..

-Dead Space. (It's not as terrific as it could have been, but it's a very good game. Warren Ellis is on the credits).
-Gears 2 (The game is seriously bugged, but some of the online co-op modes are fun)
-Afro Samurai (a gem there... based on the animated series with Ron Perlman, Samuel. L. Jackson, and so on).
-Dark Messiah (also on the xbox in the end, no..?)
-Lost Planet 2 (neat co-op online - should get more credit. vs modes online too sensitive to lag, though).

xbla - Shank, Powerup Forever, Trial HD..?
