Simple question, what misconceptions do you know of that are just blatantly wrong?

Mine would be that all Muslims are terrorists. If that was the case then there would be, literally, a billion terrorists in the world. I seriously doubt that.

Your turn.
I lead you to the Wikipedia List of Common Misconceptions. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_misconceptions]
You may have just won the thread. Congratulations.

There's few of people on the escapist who have this misconception that all of America is a big war loving country who are violent and racist.

I'd have to say the person that thinks America is racist is preeetty dumb considering it's a big country and there's lots of people with lots of different beliefs. So saying the whole country thinks/says/is [blank] is generalizing and oh yeah stereotyping. Sounds kinda RACIST to me. Are there racists? Sure, there's racism in every country. Are there war nuts? Sure there's some in every country.

Just saying since I've seen a few Escapists who are a monocle short of being a snobby racist.

2. That bats are blind
3. That evolution claims that humans evolved from chimpanzees
4. That your hair and fingernails keep growing after you die
5. That sugar makes kids hyper

Theories have no real proof.

Well, this is true in one sense of the word. However, I hate it when it's used as an argument against SCIENTIFIC theories. If you do so, you clearly know nothing about science.
Similarly, the notion that all opinions are equal. Well, no. Some people have poorly formed opinions. And some people form opinions on things like logic.

Also, to repeat the meme, "gravity is just a theory."

Actually it has nothing to do with 'good' or 'evil', it's just a symbol representing how opposites only exist in relation to each other, how they're interconnected and whatnot.

Welcome to The Escapist! You'll soon get used to nerds correcting you over inconsequential mistakes.

Fallout: New Vegas is an expansion pack for Fallout 3.
All Australians talk like Crocodile Dundee.
All Australians have either a koala or kangaroo in their backyard.

Everyone else has pretty much said all the others I can think of.

That Socialism isn't inherently flawed, and that Communism works in theory.
Dang you beat me to it!

I've been informed that to become a Marine I had to kill one of my own relatives in cold blood with a knife, we revel in murdering civilians, we're demons called up from hell to inhabit willing human bodies and to unleash a river of blood upon the world (a brief on in theater enemy propaganda a mix of one I got in Boot/Combat Training, and a highlight from one my buddy sent me)

I like that last one, surprisingly poignant and creative for the cave dwelling propagandist, he should apply for a job as a foreign correspondent for CNN...

I've also been informed that I'm a blood thirsty, baby murdering killing machine (random US Citizen, no idea what I did to set her off, I was just trying to get a sandwich...)

On that last one I'd just like to make a clarification on the whole blood thirsty thing, while I don't know every Marine in the Corps I've met a fair number and I think they represent the Corps well as a whole, and I have to say that most of the Marines I know are beer drinkers...

There is a misconception that says that the field of aerodynamics is wrong, because bees are able to fly with wings that are actually smaller than their own body.

Fortunately, that's not the case. A bee's wings can be so small because viscous effects cause the wings to move far more air in proportion to their total size than a much larger wing would, effectively giving them extra lifting area. On a macro scale, which is where most people learn about lift, those viscous effects are negligible, accounting for less than a millionth of a percent difference on a wing. On a bee, where the wings would be measured on a scale of micrometers, the area of the wing can be effectively doubled or more.

Here's one that I personally had until today. All forums devolve quickly into ego attacks, anger, and self-righteousness. This is one of the few times I've ever clicked on the forum posts to the right of my videos. I thought for sure this would devolve quickly with how people differ on their opinions, but everyone's been pretty respectful and even admit graciously when they're wrong. You guys actually made me join up. Rock on. =)
Welcome to The Escapist. The petty bitching, moaning and general unplesantness found on some other forums is not welcome here, so enjoy your stay without fear of having to deal with it :D

P.S. Stay out of the basement...I dont know why, but I was warned to stay away when I joined. Sometimes you hear muffled screams, but its best not to think about it.

Well heres a few I can think of off the top of my head.
- That teenagers are all irresponsible, immature and irrespectable.
- That old people can't be idiotic, immature and completely irrespectable.
- That women can't have male friends.
- That men can't have female friends.
- That a man interested in dancing, art and fashion is auotmatically gay.
- That a woman interested in sport, automobiles and I dunno, carpentry? is automatically gay.
- That people such as myself who love death metal and wear alot of black clothing aren't as approachable and nice as anyone else.
- That video games and animation with alot of color and style can't be mature and as interesting and entertaining as anything aiming for realism.
- That anime doesn't come in many diverse forms and consists solely of soft porn, giant robots, and regular porn.
- That all furries are sick weirdos who dress in strange outfits and spend every day jerking off to disney cartoons.
- That anyone who enjoys "stupid" movies such as Transformers can't also enjoy and understand movies with depth, meaning, complexity and artistic merit.

I should also point out that I can see the humor in alot of these steriotypes and often find them as funny as anyone else, but eh the general genuine beliefs alot of people have that lead to these misunderstandings of so many things still really bugs me.
