What are we hoping to get out of next gen consoles?

ALL the backwards compatibility, and never having to buy a new console again.

That'd be nice. I hope we reach a point where further upgrades would be pointless, but sadly we haven't and probably won't.

More goddamned memory on the first batch of consoles made. Sure back when i was 12 I thought it was amazing that my PS3 had 60GB of memory, then I realized how badly fucked I was, because every game i install takes up around 3-4 gigs. Needless to say Im just a little pissed, I need to look into either getting some sort of upgrade, or getting one of those USB 3.0's with 500GB of memory

Anti used game measures.
That way I can not worry about shelling out the money for a new console with slightly better graphics and finally focus on getting a good PC.

A free blow up doll maybe?

Possibly the inclusion of a free pump as well?

And Viagra?

Seriously though, I'd like backwards compatiblilty that stretches all the way back to the early days of console gaming.

Also, generally better hardware.

Emulation of every current and past computer system with the goal to run every game ever written.

What have you heard about the WiiU controller?
I haven't read anything about Nintendos new console (I have all the Nintendo consoles) but I usually stay away from these "pre-release-rumors" about the consoles. Any site that has news on it that doesn't say "what we've heard or some sources have suggested.."?
I'd like to get some info on it soon, they already announced a new console and something about a controller at last E3 but haven't got any solid info on anything yet.

On Topic:

What most say, beautiful looking games that are fun to play. Basically what you always hope for.

I stand by my belief that consoles are inferior to PCs for gaming. I don't see what they could possibly put into a console to make it superior--unless they just make it a home computer, lol.

No middle man for indie devs to release their game.

Easily moddable games allows for new maps, skins, sounds and entire game modes that increase the life of the product indefinitely.

Easily up gradable hardware means the games will always look and run better.

The times i had driver/hardware troubles were enough to switch from pc to console. Simple plug and play and different games like console exclusives are reasons for me. This isn`t a point of inferior or superior. In my current position i´m in no way able to afford a gaming rig and i simple don`t feel like i need one. I`m well aware that pc gaming is way better looking in terms of graphics and that it offers more. It also offers a whole different kind of trouble. I had never problems to get a game running in the last 7-8 years unlike many pc-users.

I have nothing against pc gaming, i still miss mods and modding, but i also like the different/easy feel of a console. Splitscreen gaming wasn`t very common on pc anyway, i would miss this for example.
Besides shit like DRM or Origin doesn`t look "superior" to me. I don`t won`t to support this and on console i don`t have to worry about it (yet) and can play those games.

I`ll look what Microsoft or Sony come up with. If they really won`t support used games it`s time for a switch to the pc (when i`m able to buy one).

The funny thing is, I already asked myself this back in 2009 or so, when my Xbox 360 died and when I realized that I hate my PS3 (this is before I started my love affair with the Wii). I couldn't come up with an answer for what I wanted this generation and that's about when I started going back and playing games from the previous generation and started looking for past gen games.

Honestly? Jack shit.

More novelty motion capture bullshit for consoles marketed to kids/parents. And once that market starts to dry up, more greywashed shooters.

ITT: People listing things they want out of the next console that PC has pretty much always had.

OT: Hopefully they implement Direct X or OpenGL for easier programming on the developer side, and much easier/better ports for PC.

I want a videogame console with a variety of good games. Not some retarded computer with fifty billion shooters and next to no adventure/platformer/JRPG/whatever genre you wish you had more of games.

I've seen some pictures and adds for the rectangular piece of crap they're calling a controller:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2nzsHxn37c

The design is unwieldy, the buttons are tiny, the analogue sticks are dinky, the ergonomics are non-existant. Operating the touch screen will require taking at least one hand off of the controller. This means that its stated purpose in game of being used to eliminate pause screens and HUDs wouldn't work, because looking away from the screen and taking a hand off of the controller would necessitate pausing anyway, not to mention the annoyance of constantly looking back and forth.

I did see that they are planning to release a secondary controller which looks pretty much like an xbox 360 controller, with an admission that a lot of players will find the main controller lacking when they want to play any kind of game other than the gimmicky nintendo ones. My question is why this isn't their primary controller, as if I do decide to get a Wii U this will be the only one I would use. Kind of like how right now I play any of my Wii Games I can with a gamecube or classic controller.

Well I should've been able to figure all that out by myself shouldn't I? -.-
But yeah thanks for caring to explain to me all that.
Personally I am not judging anything before I try it and I like the wii controler + nunchuck combination, it works fine for me, but yeah a bit worried how the looking at controller and TV simultaniously will work, if I ever get a WiiU, that remains to be seen. But it seems like an interesting approach in case it will work and as you said they are still keeping the "classic controller" option around for those not fond of their new ideas.

The final pinnacle of graphic technology so developers can focus on making good, longer games again instead of focusing on making the best graphics.

That, and Elder Scrolls 6 and Saint's Row 5 (since SR4 is already being developed for this generation).

Better hardware of course, backwards compatibility and good service for both online and offline play, which would include things like no DRM, not charging developers for patches and games with a focus on local multiplayer outside of shooters. Also creativity and all that jazz.
