I don't know if I can enthuse upon any particular genre or game but I am like a walking gaming and movie wikipedia. I have a mountain of useless information pertaining to both subjects. :(
Thats true, a lifetime of playing games where you use automatic weaponry has left me know way more about rifles and SMGs that I should. I mean I live in a country where I cannot even own a gun, I shouldnt even know what an M14 is let alone be able to discus why I prefer a red dot or holographic sight on it.

Sorry, but hearing statements like that is something of a pet peeve for me. For starters, computer games do not translate well to the real world. Call of Duty particularly is woefully inaccurate, be it putting weapons in the wrong categories, or just the fact they have to balance things.

Not trying to be a ball buster or anything.

OT: I'm not particularly a huge connoisseur of anything. The closest I can think of is I'm quite strategic when it comes to Total War style RTSs.

I'd say I know my way around western RPGs pretty well. I've played most of the things made in the last 15 years that people would put on a 'best of' list. Most other genres I only know lots abotu specific games or companies.

I also have a very in depth knowledge of League of Legends having played on a near competitive level (we weren't organised enough to play many tournaments but we were good enough that I've played against and beaten plenty of current professional players and/or teams in 5v5 games) not quite so experienced right now due to having stopped playign for a while and the team disbanding, these guys were probably the best group of players I'm ever going to play with.

None. I don't have time to play every game is a sub-genera or even most of them. I don't think I'll ever know any great deal about any genera. There are just so many games.

I'm bit of a stealth connoisseur. Have pretty much quite thoroughly beaten splinter cells 1-4, mgs1-4, deus ex 1&3 (going a more stealthy route though) and the hitman series( silent assassin contracts and bloodmoney).

just about to get stuck into the thief series i've heard so much about but done nothing about it til now, thanks to being stuck with shitty computers all my life

I would say horror games since I have played such games as Alone in the Dark(the original), almost every Resident Evil, almost every Silent Hill, and my personal favorite Amnesia.
I'm also going to have to go with RPGs mainly because it is my favorite genre. I even own games that were released before I was concieved such as Ultima and Final Fantasy 1 through 6.

I play RPGs a bit but I wouldn't consider myself that well versed in them.
However I do play plenty of first person shooters and enjoy RTS games. I also play League of legends a lot and would consider myself well versed in that.

Oh no I quite agree, I'm not saying that I could handle a gun or hit anything if i fired one. Just the fact that I even know the names of some guns seems like a degree of useless gun knowledge. that said I'm assuming that things like M16s are real guns right?

Yeah, but for some reason, Call of Duty makes them exclusively semi-automatic when they aren't. They're often used for sustained fire.

First Person Shooters and Pokemon I have pretty much down to the period.
This plus 3-D platformers. I'd hope to think of myself knowledgeable considering I have a job as a reviewer :p

I think connoisseur is about having a deep knowledge about a certain activity, and appreciating the finer points it has to offer. Therefore I would say I'm a connoisseur of strategy games. Ever since I started playing Starcraft online I've been playing as many strategy games as I can to see if they're as fun. One thing I noticed is that C&C games now seem totally broken in terms of mechanics, how does one play those online with any skill!

PS. Connoisseurs are usually hoighty toighty c***s (in the words of yahtzee) so you can tell I'm one because I said 'one' instead of someone

Seeing as you ask, I'm a connoisseur of u-boats, and their portral in videogames. That includes sim games, and fps's which decide to set levels around them.

I'm not really a connoisseur of anything game wise, except for the fact that I know more than most about Elder Scrolls and Fallout lore than anyone else I know, what I do know about is beef, guns, and cars, not sure I'd be a connoisseur of those, more like an enthusiast. Still I probably know more about those three things than you average Joe.

This reminds me of an interview a gun store owner once had with a local radio DJ.

He told the story of how this young man/kid(19 yrs old) walks into his store one day and starts asking about SMGs and Sniper Rifles.

He shows him a hunting rifle and the kid looks through the sights and asks: "Where is the zoom button?" The store owner says: "Zoom button? Well you can adjust the sight like this" The Kid, disappointed, responds "I'm used to using a gun that zooms in for you."

The gun store owner asks perplexed "Where did you shoot a gun with a sight that zooms in for you?"

The kid responds "Call of Duty."

I know my shit when it comes to MMO's and Platformers I guess. Anything else I start stumbling into the realm of 'durr me like dis'.
