Heavy. Medium. Light. Trappers. Beatdown. Cornering. Stuff like that.
Heavy characters are characters like astaroth, zangief, iron tager, etc... Pretty slow, can take a hell of a lot more damage than others and also deal a lot more damage but only in short bursts.
Medium characters are like, ryu, yuu narukami, ragna, jin, etc... They are the all around style characters that are equal in pretty much every area.
Light characters are any characters that move the fastest out of all three types, mainly focus on getting a huge combo going, but also can't deal or take that much damage.
Trappers are the types of characters where some of their special moves set traps that you knock your opponent into or set up a move where they combo you then start launching what they set at you. Think venom and brigett from guilty gear.

It depends on the individual game. UMVC3 doesn't really count because I staked everything onto Phoenix Wright so I missed learning pretty much every standard fighting game playstyle in favour of... well, an Ace Attorney game.

You desperately try to survive, gather evidence, find one single opening then destroy everything with Turnabout Mode

It's a nice training experience. Anyone who asks why i'm playing the lower tier characters in BlazBlue is hopelessly naive. Bitches, i've played PW for over a year. I can deal with some "low tier" problems.

I play Mu-12 in BlazBlue and Labrys in Persona 4 Arena. Yeah a trap/zoning/keepaway character and a rushdown pressure chick with an axe. General rule of any game, I don't care about fighting styles, I just care about how much I like the character as a person.

I would really like to be good with Makoto though but I just cannot do boxers to save my life.

Mu-12 is basically the cool version of Noel. She hates everything so she shoots things with lasers! Her zone control is really good.

Labrys just looks cool. Also has a fuck you invincible super that does half health damage.

I was never good at grapplers, I always had to jump in to do the 360 motion and that screwed me over a lot.

I guess I enjoy a medium-ish play style... here are some examples.

Sektor/Mileena/Kung Lao - Mortal Kombat
Shazam/Zod - Injustice
Nova/Doctor Doom/Spencer - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Evil Cole/Sweet Tooth - PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
Wolf/Captain Falcon/Link - Super Smash Bros.

Sometimes I'll play light characters, like Toon Link in SSB or Zero/Spiderman/Strider in
UMvC3. I'll also play heavy characters IF I know I'm halfway decent with them, like Jax in Mortal Kombat.

For the most part, I enjoy playing the balanced character in a roster of fighters, as it allows me to get a hang of the battle system of that particular game and then select characters that are more of my fighting style.

I often like to pick speedsters or those with special or unique abilities, as they tend to catch people off guard and getting close to your opponent is key. I don't like to spam projectiles from a distance, because that becomes annoying and tiresome.

I also do not prefer to play large and slow characters; I get that they are heavy hitters, but I like to move about the ring/fighting area than to wait for a few good hits and end the match.

I like the grappler types, you know, the tager/zangeifs, It also depends on if i like their attacks, appearance etc, Like Dr.Faust, Yoshimitsu, BANG SHISHIGAMI, or Rufus
Finally, I love to play as the weak joke characters, (Mostly Dan) because, win or lose, it's good. If you lose, you just write it off as playing as the dan, so you were handicapped and not likely to win, but if you win, you get to gloat about how you beat someone else using the joke character. win/win scenario

I normally enjoy playing characters who can string together combos that I find "easy" (so no half circles or anything weird like that) aswell as characters who can harass or poke from medium range before closing in for the kill but ultimately a big part of me choosing the character is because I like them. Some examples:

Mk9:
Jade+Johnny Cage. Always had a thing for Jade's ranged attacks and staff to poke the opponent at range even if I understand it's frustrating to play against (sooo many hateful xboxlive messages D:), also imo she tends to have the best fatalities of the mk girls that isn't a kiss of death variant, her mk3 fatalities in particular were brutal.
Johnny Cage is a character I just adore, were he in any other game I'd despise the guy but here seeing as losing tends to see your character end up in acid pit or w/e, it's hard to hate him imo so love his cockiness and attitude.
Also he punches people in the crotch, so yeh a total fun character.

Tekken:
Bryan: Punchy and fun to combo with, also like his sociopathic persona.
Steve fox: A comboer with a gimmick! His dodging style is fun for playing mind games and trolling other people.
Alisa: Tried her at a friends place and found myself liking this char a lot with her crazy robot attacks and chainsaw combos.

Soul Blade:
Siegfried:Massive range and great for poking enemies with.
Mitsurigi:Balanced character who has a wealth of combo options for fancy swordplay.

Dead or alive:
Bayman: I normally don't like grapplers but in doa they are almost like combos and yeh really enjoyed playing either this guy or Leon in doa2.
Hayabusa: I'm a sucker for ninja type moves but ain't particularly fond of kasumi or ayane so this guy gets my play time.

So overall a strong preference for medium class comboers, ranged poke options are a nice bonus if they got it.

First off, let me say that I am not a habitual gamer of the fighting game genre. I will play them, but I have a tendency to button mash and play keep-away. Any character that does quick movements and high damage, like Juri or C. Viper in Super Street Fighter 4 and Zero, Wolverine, Strider, and Amy in Ultimate Marvel v. Capcom 3. And lets not forget the joke characters like Dan and Veiwtiful Joe.

I play grapplers in ASW games. (Tager/Kanji)

Don't play SFIV much but when I do I pretty much only play Cody unless I'm being silly.

Nova/Dr. Doom/lol anybody for UMvC3.

EX Kyo/Terry/Iori or EX Iori in KoFXIII.

That's about it, I suppose. I really do tend to lean towards characters that are easier to pick up.

In MK, I always played characters that are damn hard to get your hands on-- like Smoke and Ermac. I mastered Smoke's methods for zipping around the stage (and teleporting the enemy), and then proceeded to make myself impossible to catch.

In SSB, on the other hand, I invariably went for Bowser, because he can breath goddamn fire.

I've been into Ryu since the 1st Street Fighter, and I haven't gotten off of him since.
My next character would be Fe Long, then maybe Guile. I can play others, but it doesn't feel like Fighter without Ryu.

I favor agile characters, but not over the top like Spiderman from Marvel vs Capcom.

If the fighting engine is done right, I'll try a lot of characters. Urban Reign for example, is the best brawler to come out in the history of brawlers. No game has surpassed it. It's not a "fighting" game like SF, or Tekken, etc, but both Capcom and Namco teamed up to make it, and to this day I feel it's one of the tragedies in gaming b/c it didn't get the recognition it deserves.

It's untouchable.

So while I've played all the fighting games, I prefer Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur and Tekken (in that order) and I like agile characters that are medium sized for the most part. I also like Bruce Lee type characters because he was awesome. So Martial Law from Tekken, Fe Long in SF, Jann Lee from Dead or Alive, Maxi from Soul Calibur, and so on. My favorite characters from Virtua Figher are Pai and Sarah.

Again, the fighting engine makes a difference. I did Mortal Kombat, but so many of those characters feel the same, with the exception of the larger characters. I think the more modern gen MK's were done better IMO.

I also can't get into guilty gear. It's a fine game, and I support fighting games to the hilt, but I can't get into Guilty Gear. It's like "Let's be like Street Fighter, but let's not be like Street Fighter". I think that game has a cult following.

Oh man I forgot about the Neo Geo games like King of Fighters and especially Samurai Showdown. Haomaru rules, especially the way the announcer says his name when you win. I like Mai and Kim Kaphwan from KoF, but I didn't keep track of the sequels for KoF. Gotta get back into that one.

Having played the two worst incarnations of Tager (Blazblue Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift) I no longer try to be a low tier hero. Instead I go for the best character that I can play and that I enjoy playing. I still tend to gravitate towards grapplers but at least they're not crappy grapplers.

Games I'm actively playing:
Injustice: Bane, Solomon Grundy
Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Rachel

Game I have played:
SFIV: Adon, Balrog, Guile, Zangief, Rufus, Akuma
P4A: Teddy
Arcana Heart 3: Kira
Dead or Alive 5: Mila
Blazblue: Iron Tager
UMvC3: Haggar, Dormammu, Firebrand, Akuma, Wolverine, Sentinel, Shuma-Gorath, etc.(?)

I always just went with the character that I thought was the most cool, and I'll just learn whatever style they use.

Mortal Kombat: Quan Chi (obviously). He's an evil kung-fu fighting Necromancer, what more could you possibly want?

Killer Instinct: Riptor. He's a fire-breathing Velociraptor who eats steroids for breakfast.

Injustice: Solomun Grundy. Invincible super-strong Zombie Hulk...thing. Awesome.

Samurai Showdown: I can't remember his name, but he was the Ninja. He's a Ninja, I shouldn't need to go into more detail about why he's cool.

Soul Calibur: Nightmare. He's got a sword the size of a house with a blinking EYEBALL on it, that's all I need. Oh and I liked Necrid too, because anyone who can create weapons out of thin air is awesome.

I usually play light characters.
In Street Fighter, I main Sakura.
In Blaz Blue, Noel, Rachel and Taokaka.

Often though, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I love laying into someone with Akuma in SSIV (so OP in that game) or pissing people off with a triple Cable combo in MVC2.

I'm... actually not sure, exactly... I usually doing think about it too much, but whenever I do play a fighting game, if there's a character I tend to be more well-verse with (kind of) than the other characters, then I tend to play them more often...

For example, since Melee, I have become one of the "better" players of Mr. Game and Watch around my neighborhood... You may think I'm just button-mashing, but that's just the facade when I bring down the key! Top it with a score of 7 or 8 for good measure before headbutting you to submission... (*maniacal laugh* Whoops! I did it again...) Except when I'm playing Brawl, then I'm one of the "better" players of R.O.B... I won't tell you how those matches go down, but I will say you just don't "fuck" with R.O.B... period...

Anyway, other characters I seem to play more than others are:

Talim; Kilik; Maxi; Xiba*; Sophitia*; Xianghua* (Soul Calibur)
Noel; Makoto; Taokaka; Bang^; Litchi*; Lambda-11*; Jin* (Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend)
Ms. Fortune; Peacock; Valentine; Cerebella* (Skullgirls)
Yukiko; Yosuke; Teddie; Aigis* (Persona 4 Arena)

I would list characters from KoF 13, but it's been a LONG while since I've touched that game... I kinda remember which fighters I played more of from Soul Calibur, but then again, the last I played that was during this one gaming meetup where we were all playing custom MLP characters from SC4... I do remember playing as Phoenix Wright A LOT when I used to own UMvC3...

Other than that, if you can find some pattern to my choices, then more power to ya...

Generally speaking, I tend to roll rushdown or grappler. Rushdown because I always tended to like melee-based characters, grappler because it's the only archetype I have any degree of competence at.

I like to play aggressive spacing characters who play a lot of keep-away. You know, the kind has high mobility and lots of powerful, aggressive projectiles at the cost of health or survival. I also like them to have a fast (though not necessarily damaging) melee game.

I don't play many fighting games. Just BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena and Smash Bros. In BlazBlue, I like using Lambda-11. In Persona 4 Arena, I use Naoto, though I have tried Aigis, but I don't like using her 'cuz she doesn't really have the kind of melee ability that I like, and I don't really like the ammunition mechanic. In Smash Bros, I like Toon Link.

Besides those characters, I like some other aggressive, offensive characters. In BlazBlue, Noel and Jin are fun to use when I don't want to use Lambda-11. In Persona 4 Arena, Chie is the closest thing to the kind of aggressive character that I like. As for Smash Bros, I generally use Marth or Pikachu when I don't want to use Toon Link. Marth in particular is my second favourite character for his Counter special; I'm particularly good at predicting an opponent's advances, so it's really easy for me to turn the tables with Counter and shift momentum over to me.

This. After playing around with characters' fighting styles, I just pick any characters that have those specific ones whenever I see them in a given fighting game.
I like:
- Capoeira (Soiree Meira from KoF, Christie from Tekken)
- Drunken fist (Lei Wulong from Tekken)
- Jeet Kune Do (Lee Chaolan from Tekken)
- whatever Lili (Tekken) does
- the Chinese martial arts Xiaoyu (Tekken) uses
- Commando Sambo (Sergei from Tekken)
