When I was ten, I used to help work on a farm and the family computer had two games on it that I played every chance I got. FATE and 1602 AD. When I got my own computer I tried everything I could to get those two games. FATE is on my desktop as I type, but 1602 AD refuses to play on my computer and my heart feels heavier for the loss. After I found FATE my mother managed to get Redneck Rampage and Wolfenstein 3D to play on her computer, and now the entire family seems to be pining for their favorite old games.

What games did you play as a child and when you were older tried desperately to find a way to play them again?

Bubble Bobble on the C64 was my favourite but its not very good now unfortunately as the controls are bad by modern standards I also liked the Dizzy games on C64 , Moonstone on Amiga (although it loved to crash) and the Fools Errand on the spectrum which is still just as playable today.

Myst was probably my favorite game when I was younger. Pandora's box and one of the older mechwarrior games for the pc were also very fun games growing up.

I've been playing the shit out of doom recently since I found zDoom. Good times. Of course, then I got stuck in the exact same place again for the third time. Ah well.

And X-COM. That game is still awesome.

Robot Odyssey, you literally went inside robots and wired their brains to perform actions.

King's Quest. That game.

And, although this isn't really old, Strike Commander in the 90's.

Easy one. Zanac. Also, very possibly my still-working Atari games.

How old counts as "really old"? The Settlers II came out in '96, and I still play it every now and then. And the first track of the soundtrack is burnt into my brain for good.

But then again, I always say Baldur's Gate in these threads, so... Baldur's Gate.

Jetpack

Hocus Pocus

Monster Bash (Even though I could barely get past the first level)

Then again, these are only old to me.
I also had a shitload of sega games I liked.
Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Comic Zone, Altered Beast, Road Rash, Sonic 2,

I haven't played any really REALLY old games - my first gaming memories are from when we got our first PC and we spent hours upon hours playing Pandemonium and Dungeon Keeper. Both completely and utterly awesome.

TIE Fighter probably did more to teach me the qwerty keyboard layout than any training software or word processor ever did. I will love that game in all of its 320x200 glory until the day I die.

My first real awesome game experience was with U.N. Squadron which I found out was a console port of an arcade game originally based on an anime series: Area 88. It didn't matter at the time, it was just good fun with planes, weapons, enemies, and bosses.

Later I broke into the Legend of Zelda series, and I have to say, I really do like Zelda II even though most people find it too awkward or hard. My first computer experience came with Dig Dug, Dungeon Keeper, and Heroes of Might and Magic, which lead onto Dungeon Keeper 2 and Might and Magic 7 & 8.

There's also a special place in my gamer-heart for Shining Force 1 & 2, and the original 3 sonic games.

The first and most awesome is really held by U.N. Squadron, can play it any time or place and have a fun time.

Oh. My. God.
Those tights just brought back so many memories of that game...

OT: Age of Empires is a game I still play today, along with Warlords Battlecry II and III. Man I loved those games.

The oldest game I consider to be one of my favourites and still play today is probably Alley Cat from 1984.

The first King's Quest is also from 1984, and I like that too, but KQ3 is the first in the series I can put on my favourites list.

I used to play that game a lot. I remember having a lot of fun with the level editor too, making levels that play themselves without any input from the player, but are as complicated as possible.

Ahh another who remembers the C64 fondly!

One of my favourites for the C64 was "Rockstar Ate My Hampster" the good old days of creating a band from such famous artists as Tina Turnoff, Michael Gorge, and Dick Knackered (the last, believe it or not was the name for Mick Jagger!)

I am not sure what qualifies as "really old" but I still consider Doom on PC to be one of the best games ever made.
Recently I just beat Might and Magic 7, which I never did back when I played it originally and it was awesome. Too bad I have to do Might and Magic 8 now, which was the beginning of the end.
