What are your most overrated/underrated games?

Overrated: God of War and all of its spawn, except for Chains Of Olympus and Ghost Of Sparta.

Underrated: Devil May Cry 2. I had SO much fun with that game. Sure, its not as good as the rest, but its still fuck awesome! =D

Overrated and Underrated are stupid words. Your essentially just giving your opinion on others opinions in a very non-committal way. Once you say something is overrated, you don't really have to give a REAL reason why you don't like it/think it's too popular, because you can just point to the mass of people who like the damn thing and go "See? Overrated." It's just a step below from saying that anyone who thinks other than you is wrong and they can't see things for how they really are.

I think FF7 gets both ridiculous praise and criticism, I know people who won't even TRY it JUST because it's FF7, and I also know people who went and cosplayed as Cloud after seeing like 15 minutes of Advent Children and thinking that he was the coolest thing ever. Me personally? I like the game, quite a bit actually, but I by no means think the game is faultless nor that everyone should like it. I wish more people would give it a proper chance though, a blind run is best, because then you don't have people singing holy praises for it or slinging feces at it as your just trying to see what the thing is all about. Of course such a thing is hard to achieve when everyone and their Dog's fleas have heard of the game and have a huge 10 paragraph opinion on the game one way or th'other.

Overrated and Underrated are not stupid words, the people who use them are stupid. Going by your example anyway. You're also putting your own spin on the words giving them more definitions than they have. The big crowd of people is what makes the game overrated, that's sort of the idea. Overrated means it gets more praise than you think it deserves, and the opposite for underrated. Which yes is opinionated, but it does not mean they think its good or bad. Just not what everyone thinks it is.

OT: The most overrated game in the universe for most of my growing up time is Counter-Strike. ...good god it was infuriating having LAN parties

Underrated games are hard for me to think of, because I don't confuse "underrated" with "unknown" The Misadventures of Tron Bonne was a great game, but mostly unknown, but to those who know it, they generally liked it..So it's not underrated...

So I'll have to say...Since it's fresh on my mind and I've gotten to mention it twice today. Advent Rising. Great game.

Okay...so where exactly IS the line between Popular and overrated? It should be as clear as the apparent difference between unknown and underrated since they are all roughly synonymous. Overrated and underrated do have their correct usage sure, but I stand-by that people use the word to often where it is not needed in place of an actual opinion. I also still think it's pretty egotistical to use in such a context as a media. Because traditionally the word has been about quantifiable measures of things, not opinions on things themselves...that's just sort of what it's been morphed into. A catch-all buzzword that people use to make their opinion sound more important

BioShock catapulted onto the scene at a good time and, using some tried-and-true tips from System Shock 2, became a huge hit. I think SS2 would have done the same had it happened at the same time BioShock did. (Half-Life buried it, if I am correct.)

Still, I'm of the camp that SS2 is far better than BioShock, and I get a little sad inside every time some big gaming magazine praises BioShock and ignores its older brother.

Overrated: Gears of War series, Madden series, Grand Theft Auto series, Half-Life series, Team Fortress 2, Bad Company 2, Fallout 3

Underrated: Torchlight, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4, Golden Sun, Halo 2 (odd choice, but people really don't give this credit for what it started in online gaming. It made Xbox Live successful, single-handed.)

I read the thread title and predicted everyone would immediately say Halo.

They aren't wrong, the Halo series is slightly overrated - but only slightly. It doesn't deserve perfect 10s, which is what some sites give it. They're still damn awesome games though. I'd also like to nominate Half-Life 2 for, uh, overratation. Hooray for making up words!

Underrated would be Homeworld (which received critical praise but dammit, more people should play it).

Another underrated game is Deus Ex Invisible war. Yes it wasn't as good as the first one, but still better than most first person games. The areas may have been small and the game may have been too easy and short but at the same time the areas were much less linear than most FPS games. I also enjoyed the story even if it wasn't as good as the first one.

Ocarina of Time was great, but I personally thought that Twilight Princess was better in every single way. I even had more fun playing Majora's Mask than I did playing Ocarina. I guess the reason it's deemed "the best Zelda game" is because of nostalgia. In my eyes "the best Zelda game" is A Link to the Past. Nier is my game of the year so far. It's such an amazing game, and the best game I've played this gen.

Underrated: Skate series. But I think you have to be or have been an actual skater to appreciate it.

Underrated: Digimon World 1, Digimon World 2, and Final Fantasy XIII. I don't think FFXIII deserves all of the hate it's getting, although I can understand why some people wouldn't like it.

Precisely! I personally loved Majora's Mask best of all Zelda games though.

Nier however is my favourite game of the year with the only thing coming close to it is Dead Rising 2. I've yet to play Fallout New Vegas though.
