What I'd really like to know is what people who like a lot of modern FPS games think of it. It's all well and good if everyone who hates liked it, but I'd be interested in knowing if other people liked it too.

I tend to get tired of the post-apocalyptic schtick pretty quickly, so I've always been unsure whether it's worth picking it up.

It's pretty good, I guess.
I bought it on launch and didn't feel like I wasted my money ..

Not one of the games that keeps me going back, though.

Edit:
I played it on PC with max settings, if it matters.

I hear the game has quite some issues detracting from its enjoyment. I'm holding off until its sequel, which SHOULD be better.

One of the best books ever. Game, well... played half of it, let down compared to the book, and them Americanizing the names was annoying. Besides that it was pretty good.

- Edit: fixed typo.

One of my favourite games of all time. Most replays of a campaign I have ever done.
Even the bugs and problems I liked for some reason.

It got me to read the book as well.

Looking forward to Last Light.

It's a great game, and the use of nearly-broken technology and a bullet-driven economy are some of the greatest gameplay implications I've seen in a long time.
My only problem though, is that the game can't run for crap on my computer.
I just got out of Market station and it is very annoying with the constant fear of the beasts and such, so I constantly sit and watch my breath run out and such(Which is also a good feature)

I was a little bit disappointed, I read the book before playing the game. While the overall game-mechanics were interesting (with a few minor complains-> somewhat broken stealth-mechanics, not enough alternative routes, somewhat limited weapon selection), the story suffered a little bit, there were a few highlights in the book that were missing in the game(read the book, don't want to spoil anything). But yeah, overall a very entertaining game, and I plan to buy the sequel/addon, "Last light"

Oh and a little tip for anyone who hasn't played it and wants to, be careful with your ammo, on my first run I run dry during a critical stage.
The Amoeba stage, where you need to protect on of your allies

man i loved this game it was so easy to get immersed in the world, i loved the idea that it was russian based, it was even cooler when i turned off the crosshairs and made russian the main language it gave it a very real feel to it. easly one of the better shooters ive played in a while. i read the book but its not quite as action based more on the supernatural side which makes sense that the game and book would be differnt in that regard

if you havent played it go get it, its like 20 bucks now.

You have got to be kidding me. Americanizing? It's from a freaking Ukrainian studio. Published over there too.

I loved the game, it kept up with the horror, good gun play, good story, but the only thing that annoyed me were the endings, you have to do stuff that would be impossible to see if you sped through the level due to the fact that you were scared of the people around you.

At 60 dollars it was too much. At 20 I think it warrants a purchase.

No multiplayer, and a single player that's really only good for one playthrough. The bullets = currency thing made the perfectionist in me want to not shoot/be very stingy with ammo which kind of ruined the entire experience. Most normal people probably saw that as no big deal though.

I kinda wussed out in the Library (fucking Black Librarians), but I really, really loved it. I WILL finish that game someday, damn it.

The game is awesomely depressing, after about 3 hours all I wanted to do was curl up in a hot shower and cry.
Will I ever go back... not even at gunpoint.

Didn't like it. It ran like crap (on a machine that runs Crysis 2 smooth as silk), the stealth mechanics were unreliable and the controls were sluggish. Overall, I had about zero fun in the few hours I tried to put into it. If I'm not having any fun a few hours into the game, then that game can go fuck itself for all I care.

One of the best shooters I've ever played. Really, really good, for all the reasons everyone else is mentioning already. I'll never forget it, and I'm psyched for Last Light.

Definitely one of the best games I've ever played. Bought it on a whim cuz from friends said it was pretty good. Despite the flaws it was one of the most immersive, atmospheric gaming experiences I've ever had. No game has ever had me so tense and on the edge of my seat than that game.

Started it and deduced that it gave my GTX 260 a good spanking. Turned down graphics settings. I will play through the rest once I have less university work to do.
