Heres mine

1. STAKLER Shadow of chernoboyl: Most unique, innovative FPS i have ever played. its everything i want in a genre. plus that atmosphere and setting, best by far. will remain best for lifetime

2. Half-life (series): Best pacing, level design ever. its one of those series i couldnot stop playing. do want Half life 3

3. Deus Ex (original): while HR is good but no one can beat original. its not pure FPS but its best combination of FPS and RPGs with one of the best story ever.

4. Doom (series): origin of FPS genre. without it FPS wouldnot exist

5. Chronicles of Riddick Escape from butcher Bay: its most badass game ever exist. need i say more?

6. Crysis (1): Original Crysis was unique and innovative game when it came out. graphics were bonus but its nanosuit gameplay, customization gun and open world enviroment make it excellent. sadly cant say same about sequels

7. Team Fortress 2: Best online experience ever and spent too much time. super fun game

8. Return to Castle Wolfenstien: so much better than new order. no iron sight, has fast gameplay and has some of the best soundtracks ever

9. Shadow warrior (2013): This is how you can done FPS. old school fast paced gameplay. this is best FPS in years. and lo wang is just badass.

10. Call of duty 1/UO: Once upon a time when COD was good, nichie and obsecure game. now its mainstream game and thus its crap too.

anyway what are yours?

I'm having a hard time counting 10 of them... let's go with Half-Life, BioShock, Borderlands and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. And Jedi Knight II, just for old times' sake.

EDIT: Fuck it, let's throw in Black (PS2) and GoldenEye (N64) as well. Fun games.

This isn't gonna be in any order, and I'm gonna be missing some other favorites of mine, but here's a quick list with some of the first things that come to my mind.

1. Quake
2. Doom
3. System Shock 1
4. Rise of the Triad (Original)
5. No One Lives Forever 2
6. SWAT 4
7. Duke Nukem 3D
8. PAYDAY 2
9. Serious Sam: The First Encounter
10. Unreal

In terms of my own personal preference (and not necessarily in-order):
1. Quake III CPMA
2. Quake
3. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
4. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
5. Doom
6. Half Life 2
7. F.E.A.R.
8. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
9. Call of Duty/United Offensive
10. Counter Strike

As far as rating "the top 10 FPS' of all time" I'd actually want to look at overall impact and historical significance. Maybe I'll have time one day to do so. I have no doubt that said list would only barely resemble the one I've compiled here

Currently playing through HL1 and Undying, and I've still gotta get around to actually playing through Doom 2 instead of mucking about in it so something might get bumped off that list

Also, I find the inclusion of games like Deus Ex/VTMB and Fallout: New Vegas to be a little interesting, considering the games could easily be categorized as RPGs and because the shooting portion is basically never the suggested high point of the overall experience.

So we're allowing the RPG/FPS hybrids? How much RPG is allowed? If I played New Vegas without VATS, isn't that technically a FPS?

Some combination of the Bioshocks, the System Shocks, and the (good) Deus Ex games would likely constitute a rough top 5-6. After that...I dunno...Far Cry 3? Half Life 2? Thief? Is Thief a first person shooter? You shoot arrows...

I think at this point I'm hard-pressed to actually think of 10 FPS games considering I've all but sworn them off at this point, but I guess I can give it a shot.

1. Halo 2
2. Halo 3
3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
4. Team Fortress 2
5. Left 4 Dead 2 (and 1 I guess)
6. Call of Duty 4
7. Timesplitters 2
8. ....I give up.

That's a rough in-order list of the FPSes I have the biggest attachment to or liking of. I honestly can't recall many others that left an impression on me after I burned myself out on them years ago.

Hm, haven't played so many over the few years. (And i guess i have forgotten some which were fun.) But i will try.

1. Team Fortress 2 (I have got over 1200 hours on steam with it apparently - man)
2. Deus Ex. (I am shooting Cyborgs - Also i am something in a X-Files meets Gibson future - also i do have skills and such - cool)
3. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (So, i bullrushed an Orc into a weakened support and crushed him with fallen rocks, kicked another one through a bonfire into an endless abyss all while doing cool magic, while a sexy succubus is talking to me in my mind- YEAH)
4. Jedi Knight II - Best Lightsaber-Gameplay in any game (As far as i know) - Force-Powers, Rocketlaunchers, Fun CTF, Amazing Single-player story - (Jedi Knight I had totally Awesome real video - very fun)
5. Left 4 Dead (Good Characters, good atmosphere, Teamwork, Fun Multiplayer (Monsters vs. Survivors) Good Package
6. Unreal (Tournament) (I count all versions together for this) Awesome graphics (Bought my first 3D-Accellerator card for Unreal) Many weapons with different mechanics. The voice of God as narrator (ULTRAKILL)
7. Quake 3 - (I remember playing an semi-pro in an one-at-one in this. First to 300 Kills wins... i lost 300 to ~20 Fast game, great movement)
8. Cheating: Half-Life /HL2 Mods: Counterstrike (+Source), Action-Halflife, The Professionals, The Hidden, The Ship - All good, but usually can't stand for dozens of hours on their own (For me at least). But all have a great concept, so many good, small games
9. The Build-Games (Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Wolfenstein) - Mix' em together. We have funny quips (Lo Wang is funnier) Solid gameplay and it's in THREE-D in SPACE
10. (Placeholder for the underrated gem i forgot)

I actually had a suprisingly hard time thinking of 10, mostly because I tried do as little mixing of genres in here as possible, and the list is probably out of order anyway :).

1 Halo: Combat Evolved
2 Project Reality (BF2 mod)
3 Ghost Recon
4 Rainbow Six Vegas 2
5 Battlefield: Bad Company 2
6 PAYDAY 2
7 Battlefield 1942
8 ARMA 3
9 Halo 2
10 Left for Dead 1 (specifically 1, because I didn't like 2 as much for reasons)

Fallout 3 (don't like Vegas), the Mass Effect series, STALKER series and half-life series would also be on the list, but its not purely a FPS.

10 is quite a lot, let's see...

1. Half-Life (and expansions)
2. Half-Life 2 (and episodes)
3. Counter Strike 1.5 (not 1st due to my appreciation of stories)
4. COD 2
5. COD MW1 (i really like BLOPS, but there's already enough sequelitis in this list)
6. Red Faction
7. Urban Chaos: Riot Response
8. Soldier of Fortune
9. Singularity (this might only be on here due to it being in my recentish memory)
10. Serious Sam (i still haven't played all of them, it's an ongoing project but i really enjoyed the first game and liked the demo of 2)

Other notable mentions include Natural Selection, Day of Defeat, Red Orchestra and XIII.

I guess finding 10 wasn't that hard...

Loosely in order.

1. Fallout: New Vegas: What needs to be said?

2. Serious Sam: Shoot everything that moves? Can do. A bit repetitive but the ancient civilisation set pieces really draw me in.

3. Unreal: Awesome world, awesome atmosphere, awesome music.

4. Nitemare 3D: Loosely based off the Hugo graphical adventure games for DOS. Basically Wolfenstein 3D in a haunted house. My love for it is mostly nostalgia related.

5. Brutal Doom. That game is, well, brutal. I can't go back to regular Doom after playing that.

6. Duke Nukem 3D. A classic. A lot of nostalgia there but I do think it's a genuinely good game.

7. Chronicles of Riddick Escape From Butcher Bay: A game that was shockingly good (shocking because of the source material).

That's about it for my favourites. Honourable mentions go to Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite and the first Halo.

Also I've only played about an hour of Killer7 but I think I'm going to like it a lot.

I'm going to make the list on the following caveats:

-One game per series (for the sake of variety). I haven't played all that many FPS games, and those that I have played tend to belong to distinct series (e.g. got a lot of Halo, Battlefield, and MoH games, but again, one per series).

-This is more a personal favourites thing. There are many games in the following list that I would hardly call groundbreaking, but it's more a case of personal enjoyment with some objective appraisal).

-There are some games that I would personally prefer to be on the list, but am including others due to respective importance in their own series (e.g. I found Half-Life Episode 2 to be the best HL2 installment personally, but I've included HL2 itself as it's the basis for the episode).

-I may have to edit this list, as more titles come back to me (first edit made in less than a minute of posting - go figure)

-There are many games that I haven't played - many games on the above lists I can't comment on, or I played so little of (e.g. the original Doom) that I can't say how I feel about them due to such sporadic gameplay. So, on that note:

10) Command and Conquer: Renegade
9) Battlefield 2
8) Aliens: Colonial Marines (deal with it!)
7) Timesplitters 2
6) Half-Life 2
5) Marathon
4) Medal of Honour: Pacific Assault
3) Killzone 2
2) Goldeneye
1) Halo: Combat Evolved

Not a huge fan of FPS, so my list is probably going to be missing a few 'classics'.
Nevertheless, here's my top 10 (in no particular order bar the top spot):

1.) METROID PRIME - Probably my all-time favourite game of ANY genre. Goddamn masterpiece.

2.) Metroid Prime 2 - Pretty much perfect follow-up to the original, adding a darker edge to what was already an insanely atmospheric game. Its sole blemish is the unavoidable slog of backtracking near the end to obtain all the Sky Temple Keys.

3.) Team Fortress 2 - Don't really play it anymore, but it was great fun while it lasted - always used to love Degroot Keep in particular. The humour and art direction really help it to stand above its peers.

4.) Planetside 2 - An MMOFPS built on the concept of 3-faction world PVP. Occasionally frustrating (like any MMO), but far more often satisfying as hell to play. Why more MMORPGs don't use this structure for PVP is beyond me.

5.) Borderlands 2 - Both better and worse than its predecessor. Still, an excellent fusion of FPS gameplay with a Diablo-esque reward structure. Like TF2, the art direction and humour really help it stand out.

6.) Unreal Tournament 2004 - Where did the arena shooter go? I got into PC gaming a bit late to experience UT2k4 back in its heyday, but I still have immensely fond memories of me and my mates blasting the crap out of each other during LAN parties.

7.) Goldeneye 007 - Pretty much the reason FPS is even a thing on consoles. Almost unplayable by today's standards, it was nevertheless once the standard by which all newcomers were judged.

8.) Perfect Dark - The spiritual successor to Goldeneye 007, and an improvement in almost every single area. Serious framerate issues in its original N64 incarnation make it suffer though, especially in Co-op.

9.) Left 4 Dead 2 - Quintessential Co-op Zombie shooter. LAN classic.

10.) Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - Very solid FPS adventure and by far the best entrant in the Turok series.

FPS is most of what I play. I don't consider these the best FPSs of all time, just the ones I like the most retrospectively.

1. Team Fortress 2 (3500 hours played. Just played it a couple hours ago, gonna play it again after I post this.)

2. Half-Life 2 + episodes

3. Fallout 3 (no VATS)

4. Fallout NV (no VATS. VATS is a lame iwin mechanic for people that can't aim.)

5. Bioshock 2's gameplay

6. Borderlands 2. The combat isn't anything special, but there's a lot of it, and a lot of guns and bullets to choose from.

7. Serious Sam 3. I never played the multiplayer, I just like the single player carnage. There's nothing like painting the sand with streaks of blood from the flying gibs of the enemies you ripped apart with the sirian mutilator energy whip. That game is awesome.

8. Counter-strike. I haven't played it very much or else it would be higher on the list probably.

9. Planetside 2. I haven't played it for more than a few hours a long time ago, it's just one of those special games I haven't been able to get back into since. It's the real MMOFPS. Destiny isn't an MMO, Global Agenda isn't an MMO, and Fallen Earth can scarcely be considered a functioning FPS. I haven't played Firefall, and Tabula Rasa flubbed before I could try it, so how good could it have been really?

10. Sourceforts. You remember Sourceforts? I loved sourceforts. Me and a large group of friends got together to jury-rig a sourceforts build back to working order to check it out a few months ago, and it was still fun as hell, but had a serious ghetto HL2 mod feel. Nostalgia makes things seem better than they were.

There are lots of other FPSs I have played that I didn't mention because they didn't belong on the list. They know who they are.

Not really sure about a specific order, but my list would include

Half Life 2
FEAR 1
Far Cry 3
Borderlands 2
Metro Last Light
Wolfenstein New Order
Unreal Tournament (99)
Bioshock 1
Bioshock Infinite
Shadow Warrior (remake)

I'm kind of cheating by not including Deus Ex HR and Fallout 3 which I would refer to as RPGs, otherwise I'd never be able to narrow a list of FPSes down to 10. I mean I've not even included Stalker which was buggy but fun. Or Left 4 Dead. And I'll think of another 5 games after I click post.

Doom II
Quake 3 Arena
Quake
Portal
Unreal Tournament 2k4
Battlefield Bad Company
Bioshock
Farcry
Crysis
Borderlands 2

It's so hard to choose favorites though. I'm probably entirely wrong. Seriously, I'd probably be able to argue against my own list tomorrow, or even in an hour.

I just love games.

Any order here. FPS isn't my favorite genre, but I do have a few I enjoy.

1. Titanfall
2. Battlefield 3
3. Left 4 Dead 2
4. Primal Carnage
5. Team Fortress 2
6. Destiny

And that's all I got. I can't even think of ten FPSs I've enjoyed for extended periods of time.

1. Perfect Dark. Wonderful, chaotic weaponry and great multiplayer.

2. Wolfenstein: TNO. One of the most satisfying nazi-killing simulators around, particularly for the consistent nastiness of the Nazis.

3. Half Life 2. The shooting is a little tired but the story is still rewarding.

4. Doom/Doom 2 (with Brutal Doom). RIP AND TEAR!

5. Aliens versus Predator 2. Well paced storyline, great gameplay as all three races and good multiplayer.

6. Unreal Tournament. Great range of weapons, each with rewarding learning curves and some awesome maps.

7. Crysis. Fluid and useful suit powers and scenarios that amde full use of any/all of them.

8. Dishonored. Maybe not technically an FPS but my all time favourite asshole simulator.

9. Quake. Still my favourite FPS, I can basically play it on muscle memory. It's almost a zen experience.
