1). Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: It had one of the few campaigns in the series that I absolutely loved, and I have way too many great memories of the multiplayer to count.

2). F.E.A.R.: The environments were a little bland, but the game made up for that with some great firefights and really frightening scenarios. I'm still amazed at how much it scared me despite making me a super soldier. I also think the AI is probably the best I've seen in a shooter. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. came close to beating it, but I saw way too many instances of the AI "cheating" in that game to ultimately say it was better than F.E.A.R.'s.

3). BioShock: In terms of story-driven shooters, this one is easily the best. It also has the most memorable world I've seen in a shooter and, at least on PC, I found the gameplay to be at least serviceable.

4). Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: I didn't play much of the multiplayer, but I absolutely loved the campaign. It had some great level design, and despite having plenty of things to do throughout the game, it still managed to avoid the usual problems that a lot of military shooters have of introducing something in one level and then never building on it.

5). Call of Duty: See my entry for CoD4 and just dial back the excitement a bit.

6). Halo: Combat Evolved: Despite not being a huge fan of the campaign, I still have plenty of great memories of playing the multiplayer with friends.

7). S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl: In terms of offering the feeling of survival, I don't think I've played an FPS that does better than STALKER did during its first 15-20 hours. Glitches and horrible cutscenes aside, it is also one of the most immersive games I've played. Too bad those glitches abound to a ridiculous degree and the game gets a little too easy once you start getting high-end gear. Otherwise, this game probably would be much higher, but the fact that I plaster almost everything I can with STALKER-related images should show how much this game gripped me despite its glaring flaws.

8). Modern Warfare 2: Despite being the game that arguably ruined CoD, I still had a lot of fun with this game's multiplayer. It's still my most played game on Steam, and that is due in no small part to how much time I spent with friends.

9). Crysis 2: Yeah, yeah, I know, a lot of Crysis fans say this game sucks. Still, I enjoyed it a lot, and it is one of the few FPS games I've played on consoles and enjoyed. It brought together a lot of what I enjoy about Call of Duty and the Arkham games into one incredible sci-fi shooter. That's enough for me.

10). Battlefield 2: I struggle to figure out which game should go here, but the memories of rushing through gunfire to help revive a teammate before we made a daring escape back to our team ultimately helped this game get #10.

Honorable mentions go to DOOM, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, Metro 2033, and BioShock Infinite (PC version).

Roughly in order:

1 - Metroid Prime
2 - Goldeneye
3 - Perfect Dark
4 - Portal
5 - Deus Ex Human Revolution
6 - Half-Life 2
7 - Bioshock
8 - COD Black Ops
9 - Turok 2
10 - Borderlands 2

If you don't count Metroid prime, Portal and Deus Ex HR as an FPS then squeeze Half-Life, COD Modern Warfare, and Timesplitters 3 in there somewhere.

Ugh, I doubt I can even make it to 10.

Half-Life 2
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Call of Duty 4
Far Cry 3
Halo
Rainbow Six Vegas
Resistance: Fall of Men
Medal of Honor: Frontline

The last three I had to strain myself to remember I even liked them once. Not much of an FPS guy, I guess.

Let me see... got to be careful not to give undue weight to older games, here.

1) Half Life 2

2) Battlefield 2142

3) Team Fortress 2

4) Bioshock 1

5) Goldeneye (N64)

6) Half Life (specifically, the incredible 'Black Mesa' remake)

7) Bioshock Infinite

8) F.E.A.R.

9) Crysis 2

10) Perfect Dark (One of the most imaginative multiplayer modes I've ever seen, requiring one player to play through a mission as usual, and placing his opponent in control of one of the random guards. No way to know which he is...! Well, unless Player 1 commits the cardinal sin of looking at Player 2's screen, but... that's just not done).

Any order here. FPS isn't my favorite genre, but I do have a few I enjoy.

1. Titanfall
2. Battlefield 3
3. Left 4 Dead 2
4. Primal Carnage
5. Team Fortress 2
6. Destiny

And that's all I got. I can't even think of ten FPSs I've enjoyed for extended periods of time.
only those? and only modern console FPS except great TF2??
Oh come on man. Don't start. People can like FPSs that aren't on PC.

Not sure I could place these games in any order since I don't really tend to list things in such a way but 10 FPSs I remember enjoying were:

Halo CE
Battlefield 1942 (never played online as I didn't start gaming online until I was 14 but still loved going up against bots)
Borderlands 2
Deus Ex Human Revolution (one of my personal favourites when it comes to games in general so this would probably top this list)
Bioshock
Halo 3 (I know it's not the best shooter around but I just had loads of fun with this game, all my friends had it at the time too so that helped)
Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon
Battlefield Bad Company 1 and 2

I was going to put Battlefield 4 on here until I realised that despite having fun with it I still can't forgive it for some glaring issues (which I won't get into here).
Still need to play Half Life 1 and 2. I keep meaning to but just never get around to it for some reason.

I'm not a fan of the FPS genre, but there are enough great FPS games that were recommended to me to make a list.

10. Team Fortress 2 - Comically fresh
09. Natural Selection - I'm an RTS person so this works for me
08. Golden Eye 64 - For nostalgia dammit!
07. Halo CE - It has it's moments
06. Portal - 1st is funny, 2nd one forces it
05. Call Of Duty 4 - Surprised how fun the missions were
04. Perfect Dark 64 - The weapon choices. Also, Joanna is hot
03. Metroid Prime - I never knew I could love scanning, but Super Metroid is still better
02. Half Life - I love Xen
01. Half Life 2 - So many good replay-able events. A game I have to keep putting at the top

Still need to play many more.

contrary to popular belief i cant stand Halo CE and GoldenEye. i consider those 2 most overrated.
GoldenEye today play worse than avg shoooter and when it was released it was pretty bad. especially there were Quack and Half life were around.

It's worth mentioning that I've never cared for multiplayer in any of my FPS games. This list focuses solely on my enjoyment from the single player campaign perspective.

08. Half Life 2
07. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
06. Borderlands 2
05. Bioshock Infinite
04. Metroid Prime
03. Bioshock
02. Borderlands
01. Metroid Prime 3

Well heck, here goes.

1) Quake. The game that introduced me to modding and level creation. I sank thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of hours into playing and modding this game.
2) Halo 3. In my opinion the best "all round package" of Halo games.
3) Halo Reach. Also very good, much more tightly tuned multiplayer, superb Forge World.
4) Left 4 Dead 2. In retrospect a very worthy successor to the original, especially now all the original campaigns are playable in the L4D2 engine. Very accessible but also very deep.
5) Far Cry: Instincts. Played this loads on the original Xbox and I was pretty active in the map creation scene.
6) Serious Sam First/Second encounter. Gonna count these as one game for simplicity. Excellent updated spin on retro FPSs.
7) Unreal Tournament. A really impressive game back in the day, great customisation and tweaking options.
8) Duke 3D. It hasn't aged too well, but the simulated real-world environments were groundbreaking back in the day.
9) Halo 3 ODST. The best version of Firefight mode to date. Had loads of fun playing this co-op.
10) Halo CE - got to give some respect to the game that redefined the genre.

Stuff that didn't make my list:
Anything pre-Quake, because that was my first FPS. Sorry, Doom and Wolf 3D.
Half Life 2. It's not a good FPS. It's a very well-constructed exercise in world-building with a sub-average FPS attached to it. I loved the characters and story, but the actual first person shooting aspect was the weakest part of the game IMO.
Portal - excellent game, but I don't consider it a shooter.
Halo 2. I was pretty disappointed with it at the time, and even now if you put all the Halo's in front of me, Halo 2 is the one I'd least want to play. The gameplay revolved far too much around set-pieces rather than Halo's trademark sandbox exploration.

I don't really have any order to these, I have never been able to claim any game was my "favorite", but these are probably my top 10 FPS games
1. Half-Life series, for obvious reasons
2. Medal of Honor Allied Assault-purely based on the multiplayer, it wasn't good but it was one of my first experiences with online gaming and I spend hundreds of hours playing it.
3. Counter-Strike-the game I would have played instead of Allied Assault had Counter-strike not been rated M, it was the mid 2000s and my parents wouldn't let me play M games. The few times I played CS, I was hooked.
4. Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, and 2-1942 was the first PC FPS I ever played and it was incredible. I had never played a game with this much content, and when I went online and found 64 player battles, I was hooked. Vietnam was the next game I played and I loved flying the helicopters, and then Battlefield 2 made everything flawless, first FPS I played with an experience/level based unlock system for multiplayer (the thing that made COD4 so popular wasn't a new idea). 64 player battles with jets and helicopters flying over head never gets old. I liked Battlfield 3 as well but Origin held it back and I have given up on the series.
5. Deus Ex, Original and Human Revolution- I liked both games about equally, though for different reasons. Human Revolution was not as good, but it was a lot more fun to play for me.
6. Doom-Haven't disliked a Doom game yet, Doom 3 was good but not great and I personally think Doom 1 is better than Doom 2.
7. Bioshock series-liked them all, Infinite had the most impact on me but loved the first the most and even enjoyed the sequel.
8. Fallout 3 and New Vegas-I like the world of 3 better, but New Vegas is better in literally every other way.
9. Postal 2-this game is interesting in that I love parts of it and the overall idea of it, and also agree with people who think it is garbage. One of the games I like thinking about more than playing really, just the fact that it was shown to the supreme court makes me giggle like a schoolgirl.
10. Payday 2-lots of things I hate about it, and yet I continue to play it as often as I can.

Games that I love but didn't make the list for no real reason:
Crysis (first only), Far Cry 1 and 3, Portal series, Painkiller, Serious Sam series, Day of Defeat: Source, Tribes, Mirrors Edge (regret not putting this in the list)

Dishonorable Mention:
Team Fortress 2-this is a personal opinion but I think TF2 was the greatest game I had ever played. And then they updated it. I don't know where along the line I began to resent it, but I officially gave up on it when the engineer update broke 2fort. Don't care if they have fixed it or whatever, I liked the balance of power and tactics and nothing short of reverting to the original game will ever being me back to it. Entirely personal opinion but I truly hate the game as it stands now. This game was my personal version of being a Star Wars fan who hated the prequels. Still love the characters and lore, but that just makes me even more angry because I know I cannot stand to play the thing anymore.

1. Call of Duty Ghosts
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
3. Call of Duty: World at War
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
6. Medal of Honor: Warfighter
7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
8. Battlefield 4
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops
10. Call of Juarez: The Cartel

All of them are amazing, the story, the characters, the game mechanics, they just get everything so right.

I haven't played an FPS in a long while and, my top 10 lists are all subject to change...that being said though, let me see if I can think of 10 anyway:

1. Duke Nukem 3D/64
2. Portal 2
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
4. Fallout 3/New Vegas
5. Time Splitters: Future Perfect
6. Bioshock
7. Solider of Fortune 2: Double Helix
8. XIII
9. Black
10. Halo: Reach

It took a bit longer to decide on my list... I mashed Duke Nukem 3D/64 together because the core game is the same from what I remember and it was that core game between both the PC and, N64 versions that I've dumped hundreds of hours of time into. I also lumped both of last gen's Fallout shooters together since they use the same engine. I realize they're different games but, they're made from the same engine, feature tons of similar elements and, if they were mashed into a single game, that single game would be a sum greater than their two parts. Halo: Reach is one of two Halo games wherein I'm happy playing it outside of one of the vehicles. The plot helps to make Reach my favorite, at least until we get Halo: Vehicular Combat Evolved.

I'm having a hard time counting 10 of them... let's go with Half-Life, BioShock, Borderlands and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. And Jedi Knight II, just for old times' sake.

EDIT: Fuck it, let's throw in Black (PS2) and GoldenEye (N64) as well. Fun games.
I am having the opposite problem, my mental list immediately rocketed up to about 30 and then I wondered if getting rid of Returnto Castle Wolfenstein in favour of Perfect Dark or Battlefield 2 was horrible thing to do.

Anyway, without further ado:
1 DOOM
2 Half Life
3 System Shock 2
4 Crysis
5 Battlefield 2 (also 3)
6 Day of defeat: Source (and Counter Strike)
7 STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (especially with mods)
8 Perfect Dark
9 Alien: Resurrection (all hail the terrifying inventor of dual stick controls!)
10 Halo: Combat Evolve (honourable mentions to ODST and Reach)

Stuff I wanted to put in my top ten list but couldn't, in no particular order. CoD4: Modern Warfare, most of Wolfenstein, Quake Wars, Quake, C&C: Renegade, TF2, the Metro Series, Deus Ex (would have been on the list but for SS2), Portal, Half Life2, Left 4 Dead 2, Goldeneye 64, Unreal Tournament and 2k4, Timesplitters series, Black, Black Ops 2, Medal of Honor from 1 to Allied Assault, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon, Killing Floor, Alien Vs Predator/AvP2 and probably a great deal more.

In no particular order:

1) Halo: Combat Evolved - The game that really introduced me to games.
2) Halo 3 - The all around best Halo package, and the conclusion to my favourite trilogy of games.
3) Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - The best Battlefield multiplayer, hands down. dat destruction
4) PAYDAY 2 - Just a brilliant game to play with a few friends.
5) BioShock - Probably one of my favourite story driven games.
6) Borderlands 2 - With a hilarious story, a huge drive to get the best loot, and coop makes this game just super fun to play. I cant wait for The Pre-Sequel.
7) Portal 2. This counts, right?

Well, that is disappointing. As someone who plays a lot of shooter games, considering that I can only come up with 7 that I would classify as being "my favourite", is kinda weird. Sure, there are a lot of games that I play, like Battlefield 4 or Titanfall, but I wouldn't really put them anywhere near "favourite".

1. Halo 3: ODST
2. BLACK
3. Timesplitters: Future Perfect
4. Fallout 3/NV
5. Star Wars Battlefront 1

Think that'll do it.
