My phone...sounds like a goddam phone when it rings! And yes, I had to actually find a regular ass phone ring to put on the phone.
Pretty much this, except for the having to go out and find one part. My phone is on vibrate most of the time when I'm out so even if I did have a custom ringtone, nobody would ever hear it. I always wanted a Haruhi ringtone though... [http://youtu.be/utw90V0metY?t=22s]

Until recently I used various snippets of Mark Hamill's Joker laughter I'd reassembled into ringtones. Always priceless to see people get startled on the bus when howling laughter started emanating from my pants.

Right now I'm using the original outro music from the 80's TMNT cartoon. Rockin'!

I use the classic: Metal Gear's CODEC.
Ditto. It's perfect for so many reasons:

1) It sounds like an actual phone. Music ringtones always mess me up... especially when I'm already listening to music. I often don't hear the phone.

2) It's completely inoffensive and elegant. Not a shrill, annoying ring. Nor is it faux-analog... I really hate those, for whatever reason.

3) Those who know it will love it. Those who don't, don't think twice about it.

I generally switch between that and the Metalocalypse ringtone. It's pretty shrill and annoying... but in a fun sort of way.

I've had two really awesome ringtones lately....

First, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0g653OwV4g with the SEGA tune cut out... screaming guitar is always awesome for a ringtone, especially when the length of the tune fits a ringtone perfectly.

Second, the first 29 seconds of this: http://lapfox.bandcamp.com/track/passing-of-the-dictator
If that's not an extremely unique sound for a ringtone, I don't know what is.

Awaken, by Dethklok.
I love it's irony as I often get woken up by the damn phone.

My first nerdy ringtone was Song of Storms/Windmill hut from LoZ. This was on an old ass monochrome phone, which didn't have bluetooth, memory cards or even a goddam USB cables. In fact, merely being able to play MP3 meant it was top of the line at the time. I order to get this as a ringtone, I had to find it on the internet, write down the URL of the MP3 file, then type it on the primitive thing that passed for an internet browser on it. At the time I was certain it would work but today I'm amazed it did. (It was the background song of the windmill, not the Ocarina song - skip to 0:08).

When I switched phones I actually knew about how MP3s worked so I ripped part of Bioshock's intro, more specifically Andrew's speech. It may have been my favourite ringtone ever, but I eventually got bored of it, and by eventually I mean this year when I got a smartphone and was too lazy to create a folder just for ringtones. (3:37 to about 4:47, but in practice by about 4:20 it would go to voicemail.)

For a while I wanted to use the opening or ending themes of World of Goo, but I was too lazy to edit them and they have a quiet intro during which I wouldn't know if my phone was ringing, so I didn't. Nowadays I just use Aggrieve [http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/aggrieve].

Pokémon battle theme (first generation). If somebody makes eye contact with me at the same time as I get a call, everybody in the room becomes genuinely aroused.

True story.
