What Bethesda Needs to Do

Talking with my friends on the weekend it seems that all of them are buying Skyrim on their PC's for modding and I'm sure that there are more people thinking that way (Myself included). Because of that I think that Bethesda should work with The Elder Scrolls Nexus or other modding sites and every month/two weeks release a choice select pack of mods as DLC. This DLC should either be free to prevent used sales or be sold for a small price to ensure Bethesda receive a steady post-release income.

Just my idea.

EDIT: On the consoles this is.

Why would people pay for a collection of mods they can get for free? Not to mention that this would be illegal without getting permission.

I think they've done enough by including modding tools.

I was actually thinking of a hybrid, kind of.

Anyone else hear the rumor about .hack//sign planning a new game AFTER the Haseo trilogy, that'll actually be online, instead of imitating it is?

What I heard (no idea where, maybe was just a daydream and I get dreams/reality confused OFTEN) is that the game's modding tool will be in the PC, but the game itself actually on XBOX360/Live. Your account subscription lets you 'own' an Area, you only owning that Area with your Keyword combination. You can do whatever in there, at least to a point.

Can also play offline but only in certain areas, most of them are other player's areas that can only be accessed online.

My idea for Bethesda was to do something with a similar trait: Make player mods easily able to be imported on the console.

That way you don't buy the console version, then a week later say 'oh what an awesome mod I've heard about. Well crap, I bought the wrong copy! Why'd they even make it for consoles??'

Well that wouldnt work with Xbox360. Since good ole XBL requires things to cost, so you couldnt go free. Theeeen if you went cost, it would have a minimum available price, and to be fair..most mods out there arent very good.

The main problem is..who does Bethesda work with to do this? You mentioned the good ole Nexus...how would that even remotely work? Bethesda would need to sift through thousands and thousands of crappy uber item mods to find the actual good ones, then what..sell them for a dollar or two?..since nobody is going to pay full dlc price for a mostly fan made mod. Then what..does the maker get a cut? So thats the console owner, Bethesda and the maker all needing to split the dosh for a cheap mod.

Not gunna work. There are just way too many problems with how consoles operate to make it work. if you want mods, and you want to make your game looking 5X better over the next few months? Get PC.

EDIT Oh and compatibility. How..will that work? You will literally need to make two versions of every mod to cater for both consoles, on top of the PC version will be built first.

*headdesk* I just love this mentality some people have. Game isn't even out yet and people are already like "I'm gonna buy the game so I can mod the shit out of it!" For the love of crap, am I the last person on this planet who actually likes having vanilla games?

see i would love this. like the rest of you, i froth at the mouth whenever someone even mentions skyrim... but my computer simply could not handle its awesomeness. so i will be buying it for the console. which im ok with, as in my opinion a controller is FAR superior to a mouse and keyboard for anything but an RTS or MMO.

that being said, im going to miss out on riding dragons. ive seen multiple modders claim that will be the first thing they attempt (aside from the obligatory full elf/orc nudity) and im quite jelous. and also a hardcore mode ala fallout - new vegas. if i could get my hands on that for the console i would be a happy chappy.

That would be cool, though there is still the rights issue. I could see that working.

And yet people bought Left 4 Dead's 360 DLC...

Anyway, yeah, this would be really cool, but also really complicated, also there would be resistance to pay for something that you would get for free on another platform.

Unless it's a TC mod, or it's more like a fanmade patch (e.g. for translating a Japan-exclusive) I tend to agree.

For modbucket games like these? Probably. The heavies of the modding community gravitate to these titles, and develop some pretty amazing stuff.

For fallout 3, I cranked up the difficulty through the roof to give myself a really hard leveling experience my first play through. Really improved the atmosphere when you aren't a walking death engine.

They'd use the same Models and Texture formats I think and I reckon that the Nexus Admin or Community would just pick from the crap to send on to Bethesda to redo scripts etc. OR modding tools for 360. As for the money the thinking was you had to give permission for use but would not receive any pay and I was leaning towards the released for free side of the DLC but it would seem that the XBLA won't let that happen.

the problem is that mods are just not written carefully enough to be completely compatible with each other, and the amount of work bethesda would have to go through to make them compatible would tie them up for a long time to come.

No, let the console gamers have their vanilla game, let PC gamers mod the fuck out of it and let bethesda go off to work on their next brilliant game.

EDIT: On the consoles this is.

Our mods are free and we won't give them over to Bathesda for releasing on their own.

Keep in mind that all the mods on Nexus are peoples work and it's not just as easy as Bathesda coming in and saying "we want to release mods".

We make them for ourselves and the community. We certainly don't make them so a publisher can come along and make money off them.

Long story short, you have zero chance of this happening.

You should see how rabid some of the guys over at Nexus get about their work.

A lot of the modders would stop posting up their work if guys over at Nexus agreed to let Bathesda have any.

Either way you have no chance of it happening.

You want mods then get on the PC.

Quite possibly, yes.

Most of us do play the game first before we start modding. That way we can have a look around and see what we want to add in.

But what to do once the game is done and explored?

Thats right, we mod.

Add in some more quests, a few more buildings and towns, some new armour and weapons and a few NPC or companions.

Why do you think some of us buy games like this, just to play them?

I generally only buy games I can mod. If I can't mod or tweak a game then it's a waste of my money as once it's finished it's going to be put on a shelf and forgotten. If I can mod it then it's always going to get some attention when I get new ideas.

I still play around with Morrowind for that reason.

Your definitely not the only one man. I love games just the way they are. I loved games like oblivion, Falllout 3, Morrowind, and many more all without mods. In fact, I actually hate mods.

Seriously the only good kind of mods are either graphics mods or lost content mods (KOTOR 2 for example), THAT'S IT!
You, sirs are both prejudiced. There's nothing wrong in willingness to mod even unreleased game. There are trailers, news, "leaks", also Bethesda itself doesn't hide "philosophy" behind the game - and that's not everyone's piece of the pie.
Also, it's not that there are mods for 4 or 5 games. Modding wasn't discovered yesterday - there are games older than some of Escapists here that are still alive thanks to mods.

What Bethesda needs to do is

- use the Frostbyte2 engine for their next games
- bring the DarkMessiah Combat system into Skyrim via 1st patch
- add MP COOP for 8 player parties

Easy.
