So, recent threads got me thinking, what games characters this gen are actually good? You know, characters that don't fit every cliche in the book, that do things differently either aesthetically or have an unusual personality trait.
I'm not talking about your characters though so no Shepards, Dovahkiins, Hawkes etc etc and I'm talking about characters purely from this gen, any character featured on a console released before the DS, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is not allowed.
Now I don't know too many, some characters I have liked come to mind though
These guys may look like your typical anime heroes but they're far from it.
Flynn and Yuri are childhood friends who join the knights in order to try and change the corrupt government from the inside. Flynn sticks with it and quickly rises through the ranks. Yuri however left the knights to change things in his own way.
Without wanting to spoil anything what makes these two characters so great is the way they play light and dark off each other while still both being the hero, just working in different ways. While Flynn is a white knight type character, Yuri is a complete anti-hero but the two of them aren't stereotypical in either of these roles leading to a few shocking moments in the game, especially with Yuri's character.
I'm aware Faith isn't such a great character personality-wise but here we have essentially an asian, female, postie who wears suitable clothing and isn't sexualised nor is she defined by her race or gender, her character is nothing new, though she is a strong character, Rihanna Pratchett has managed to create a character that I feel is one of the better characters this year
Grimoire Weiss, Nier, Kaine and Emil are JRPG characters with a difference, one is a floating book, one is a middle aged man, one a lonely, foul-mouthed girl in her underwear possessed by a demon, the other a child-come skeleton who can turn things to stone. Nier is on a journey to free his daughter from a disease named the black scrawl but the story ends up pretty unpredictable and not only that but the more you replay the game the more light is shed on the world and characters.
Not only are these guys unusual looking but are all very deep characters with a tonne of backstory shown throughout the game, ensuring that not one of them ends cliche or stereotypical at all
These are just a few recommendations though I am playing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and the characters in that seem pretty great too (yes I know they're based off a book so may not be acceptable) either way, what characters do you think are great or unusual this gen?
