What characters do you like this gen?

So, recent threads got me thinking, what games characters this gen are actually good? You know, characters that don't fit every cliche in the book, that do things differently either aesthetically or have an unusual personality trait.

I'm not talking about your characters though so no Shepards, Dovahkiins, Hawkes etc etc and I'm talking about characters purely from this gen, any character featured on a console released before the DS, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is not allowed.

Now I don't know too many, some characters I have liked come to mind though

These guys may look like your typical anime heroes but they're far from it.

Flynn and Yuri are childhood friends who join the knights in order to try and change the corrupt government from the inside. Flynn sticks with it and quickly rises through the ranks. Yuri however left the knights to change things in his own way.

Without wanting to spoil anything what makes these two characters so great is the way they play light and dark off each other while still both being the hero, just working in different ways. While Flynn is a white knight type character, Yuri is a complete anti-hero but the two of them aren't stereotypical in either of these roles leading to a few shocking moments in the game, especially with Yuri's character.

I'm aware Faith isn't such a great character personality-wise but here we have essentially an asian, female, postie who wears suitable clothing and isn't sexualised nor is she defined by her race or gender, her character is nothing new, though she is a strong character, Rihanna Pratchett has managed to create a character that I feel is one of the better characters this year

Grimoire Weiss, Nier, Kaine and Emil are JRPG characters with a difference, one is a floating book, one is a middle aged man, one a lonely, foul-mouthed girl in her underwear possessed by a demon, the other a child-come skeleton who can turn things to stone. Nier is on a journey to free his daughter from a disease named the black scrawl but the story ends up pretty unpredictable and not only that but the more you replay the game the more light is shed on the world and characters.

Not only are these guys unusual looking but are all very deep characters with a tonne of backstory shown throughout the game, ensuring that not one of them ends cliche or stereotypical at all

These are just a few recommendations though I am playing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and the characters in that seem pretty great too (yes I know they're based off a book so may not be acceptable) either way, what characters do you think are great or unusual this gen?

Yes. Nier. This is good.
Awards also go to Garrus and Alistair for being total bros. Some weirder characters like Garcia Hotspur and Johnson are fun too.

Well, in no particular order:
- Andrew Ryan
- Big Daddies (shut up, they count)
- GLaDOS
- Urdnot Wrex
- Liara T'soni
- Garrus Vakarian
- Legion
- Jack/Subject Zero
- Mordin Solus
- The Arishok
- Avaline Valen
- Varric (did he have a second name?)
- Morrigan
- Alistair
- Sten
- Rucks

Honorable mention to The Joker from the Batman games, since he only half counts, having obviously existed long before the games.

Let's see...
GLaDOS, Wheatly, Cave (Portal/Portal2).
Zoey (L4D, but largely from the additional comics).
Legion (Mass Effect 2).
That's all I have off the top of my head. Too many strategy games or old things.

Video game characters I like? My favourite ones come from Blazblue.

I just really enjoy this guy for some reason, he is one of my favourite characters of all time. Of course I also love that
he is Jin and this is constantly referenced and hinted at. I also really enjoyed his connection to Tsubaki

Or Terumi as I usaully call him. He is so incredibly evil that it's almost funny, one of my favorite evil characters of all time. I also felt that his English voice actor fit the role so well.

These are the main two and when I think of favorite characters, these two come to mind. There are others of course but it's these two I usaully remember.
I would also list Jin but since he is Hakumen he is already listed. I like Jin quite a lot, at first I thought he was just a prick to everyone but I have come to really enjoy his character.

Rucks and Zia from Bastion.
Logan (Big Hat guy) from Dark Souls.
All of the characters from TF2 actually have amazing character compared to a lot of current gen single player games, this is why I love VALVe.
Wheatley from Portal 2, mainly because Stephen Merchant.

No love for John Marston yet? He's one of the most fleshed out and interesting characters around.

Genuinely likeable and badass at the same time, he really had amazing character development throughout the game.

Pretty much your squad in Mass Effect.
yeah, that, and the cast of the Saints Row franchise.

The cast of Fallout New Vegas is also pretty good too.

Not played Red Dead I'm afraid, my friend keeps asking me to but I have such a list of titles to play it's just very very very far down.

My lack of love for Rockstar titles means I'm just not that interested

The cast of Saints Row
The mask from Splatterhouse

Ezio, pretty much everyone in Mass Effect, Shaun also from Assassin's Creed, Varric and Silly Hawke from DA2 (if Hawke counts), everyone from TF2 and quite a lot of people from Fallout: New Vegas, Yes Man in particular, and I'm not saying that just because I have to.
Yeah, almost all of them have been mentioned before, but hey, the OP asked for my opinion.

John Marston is stoic and reserved in an impressive way, but he's not actually that amazing a character. It's more the events that happen to him that are exceptional. In many ways he's just the foil for every other character in the game.

Um... that's going to take some considerable thought.
- Leah from from Diablo III (yes, I liked her, shut up!)
- Ashely Williams from Mass Effect
- Tyreil from Diablo III (he's mortal now so he counts)
- Bianca from Dragon Quest V (yeah yeah I know, not really this generation, but I've only played this gen's version of the game so I'm counting it)
- Leliana from Dragon Age: Origins
- Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins

... and that's all I've got for now.
