What 'Class' Do You Naturally Tend To Play In Games?

Healer. Support. Cleric. Call it what you will, it's what I'm always forced to play. Because no one else likes to play the role and the team is ALWAYS better off with one than without.

It varies... I tend to go more thematic than paying attention to the actual role involved.

for instance, in star trek online I'm an engineer.
Then again, STO's breakdowns of it's 3 classes work out somewhat strangely.

Partly because you can mix and match roles, but partly because they overlap somehow.

While tactical is mostly straight-up DPS, the Engineer is both Tank AND support, and the Science is Support (but also has a lot of debuffs to work with)

Although, as an engineer I found I actually tended to spend a lot of time crafting. Which kind of fits in a roleplay sense, but in terms of game mechanics isn't really tied to any particular class...

In fantasy settings I lean towards mages, and magic users of all kinds, though I'm fond of being the kind of person that can hit you with heavy firepower from a distance and then run up close and whack you in the face as a follow-up...

I guess I don't think too carefully about the gameplay implications compared to the superficial traits of various classes though.

MMO - lean toward DPS, particularly melee DPS.

RPGs - often lean towards...physical damage, so anything stabby, crushy, etc. that doesn't involve magic. Melee classes, basically. Warrior or rogue are fine.

Sneaky bastardry if the game supports it, I'm taken with the idea of beating a game with skill and patience rather than tanking it.

Magic users. The more complex, the better. If I get to specialise, I'll usually go with ice or cold magic. Unfortunately, almost every game that has these options falls quite short in the implementation of them. Especially in MMOs and the Elder Scrolls games.

In fact, I think the only magic system I've truly enjoyed is in Magicka.
You might like the magic system in Lichdom : Battlemage. Apart from the game being built around mages=badasses, the magic creation system often kept me micromanaging for a couple of minutes before heading into battle. Like in magicka you combine elements of spells you find into new combinations. So for example you'll add ice as a damage factor, an AOE modifier, a DOT and voila, your personal pillar of frostburn ice is ready.
Thanks for reminding me of that game. I bought it in early access and it did seem like it had potential. I see it's been finished now so I'll have to give it a go soon!

Mages. I find the other classes in such games really boring. Waving swords around is boring to me. Using bows is boring to me. Using magic to make the laws of reality my *****, that makes me interested.

The only time I have enjoyed non mage like classes in a game was The Old Republic but that was because I could have a lightsaber in each hand. How could I not enjoy that?

Ether a DPS based tank, a 'tanky' tank or just DPS. Usually Melee as I find casters kinda dull, but I will play then now and then

Up close and personal with a big 2hder (sword or axe..never hammers because I dislike them) so Warrior class in 99% of the cases.

Paladin, I don't care what their role is. It is my calling. In all games.

7 years ago, I used to go for dual sword wielding classes. Now I just make 1 character for each class, be it single player RPG or MMORPG. No longer have any preference between ranged & mele.

Well, most of my life I've always played as warrior type characters, but more recently I've been mixing it up. It's become an even split between the mage and rogue type characters, the deciding factor usually being whether the Rogue can use both knives and bows at the same time or if they're considered separate playstyles.

I'm usually some kind of Warrior/Mage hybrid with emphasis on the warrior aspect.

Recently, though, I've tried to mix it up and rely more on the magic using spells first and then "run up and hit things" (as Yahtzee says).

As a big fan of the direct approach, I lack the patience to play as a pure mage or sneaky type character.

The ranged user, usually super passive and is not the first person to get hit, but can turn the tide of battles when used effectively. This goes for all types of games.

I like ranged classes, so mages or ranger type classes, that being said though, I hate casting times, so I do tend to lean more towards ranger classes. Whilst I do experiment with melee classes sometimes, I always end up overextending and getting myself killed. I wish that I got better at melee classes though, because in games with equipment customisation, heavy armour tends to look the coolest. As for healers, tanks or stealth-focused melee classes, never really been my thing. I like doing the deeps.

Examples:
In WoW I mained a Hunter.
In LoL I tended to play as Varus.
In GW2 I mained a Warrior, but I always had a rifle as my secondary.
In all 3 Dragon Age games I played a mage.
In Skyrim I played a archer/sneak combo because it was OP.

I tend to like classes that use "special" tactics. Really anything unique or interesting that you don't see in common rpg's if it's available, but failing that I will go for rogue types.

In non-multiplayer RPG's, I tend to do either a ranged stealth class or a fighter-style class where my ability to dodge/block is important. In multiplayer RPG's, I either go glass cannon or full tank.

I have a tendency towards rogues, rangers (or anything long range) or magic classes. I've never been a fan of the tank-y roles unless I have no other choice or the friendly AI of NPC's has a constant brain bubble.

If it's an MMO I find that I tend to go for a ranged DPS class that has a smidge of off healing ability. Like a Balance Druid in WoW for example.
