Some others that come to mind.
1.Resident Evil (Re-make)(HD Remake) Available on PC and all current/last gen consoles (including Nintendo GameCube and Wii=might be compatible with Wii-U).
2.Resident Evil 2 One of my all time favorite games (and yes, I know that I have many that I consider my favorites)

3.Silent Hill 2/3 Just awesome, creepy atmosphere

4.Alien vs Predator 1&2 (1999&2001) PC. Just amazing,heart pounding excitement/adrenaline rush!

5.Half Life and Half Life 2-Just amazing FPS games.

6.Stalker-as another poster had mentioned, awesome Dark Sci-Fi First Person action adventure.

7.Metro 2033/Last Light Very similar to Stalker and great games,in and of themselves.

8.The Last of Us: It's been mentioned before that it's an amazing game,so all I can do if further recommend it.

9.Deus Ex:Human Revolution an entertaining Prequel to the original Deus Ex.

10. State of Decay: Entertaining zombie apocalypse action adventure (one of the better zombie apocalypse games in the zombie zeitgeist).

This style of game throws around some interesting combinations of words. For Example: Tanking in Bear form. That definition is on the next page that I haven't read yet. So, right now that phrase sounds like word salad to me.
It does indeed. You might find this useful while reading it: http://mmos.com/mmo-terms

And as stated before, do keep in mind that the guide is dated. It might be functional for broad concepts, but the game's mechanics are constantly in flux.

Planescape: Torment was great but the player can find similar with Pillars Of Eternity without the crippling engine.
See, the funny thing about PoE is, it APED that shitty engine, and the story isn't even in the same sport as Torment's, let alone the same league.

And Pirates and Black Flag are wildly different experiences. Beyond both being "about Pirates".

Generally I agree with you about retro games not aging well, but the thread is about "classics"...and the working definition of that word requires aged games. People listing 1-5 year old games as "classics" does amuse though. I guess if the individual in question is 10-15 years old, they would seem quite storied.

Donkey Kong Country 1-2 (sadly missed 3) and when i think of my time with 16 bit put Super Mario World 2 , Super Mario Kart and Street Fighter 2 on the list. Since i love brawlers i have to mention Final Fight and this awesome game called TMNT-turtles in time. I also played Double Dragon on the c64 from what i remember the atari version looked always better but hey it was my first brawler.
Back in the day it was 2 buddies 1 couch toying around with their joysticks in front of a screen. Sometimes there were even 4 guys around.

*Gets out THE FOLDER* Sit down folks, from nooblets to vets, casual to hardcore, members to browsers that have lost their way; I have games for you.

Earthbound - A bloody classic and very well known. Play it for yourself to see what one can do with an RPG if we step away from the dwarves, elves, and dragons. But everyone basically knows of it, especially with comparing Undertale to it. So I won't dwell to much on it.

Brigandine - Big Grand strategy with a turn, class, monster based combat system. You are put in charge of one of 5 kingdoms and tasked with TAKING OVER THE WORLD! Each kingdom has their own personal and monsters they can summon to do battle with the player gaining different ones as they take over more castles/forts, or losing access if they lose castles. And everyone can be upgraded from human commanders to the monsters they command. Great game, if it wasn't for the slog it was to play it. Takes forever and I wasn't used too it when younger. Also points off for not being the 'finished' product, the version we got was shipped without some content.

Wizardy or Etrian Odyssey - Old school dungeon crawling games. Make a party of brave adventurers and get to crawling. Now Etrian might be breaking the no 'recent' games rule but they are on par with the older dungeon crawlers just with more accessibility. They still function the same way so give them a look too. Worth seeing where RPGs(at least western) started from.

Secret of Mana(Any of them) - The Mana series has fallen kinda off the radar which is sad as the games where pretty good. Each one kept doing something different while holding true to the roots of an action rpg(In 2D you understand). Great music, good atmosphere, and a different experience each game, go take a look. I prefer Secret of Mana, but a lot of people love Seiken Densetsu 3.

And so I'm not accused of being a 'console pleb' or something,

Command and Conquer / Starcraft - See where the RTS started. Yes, there were games before and around their release, but these are the two more well known titles. Starcraft especially. Think of them as a page of RTS history.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2/3 - Another game from the history books, and a style that sees a lot of copying today. Go back and see how this series was in days past. I'd skip the first one as it is clunky and is pretty dated but Heroes 2 and 3 are still pretty playable by today's standards.
