What constitutes a game spoiler?

It was Earth all along.

Spoiling that "stuff happens!" is not a spoiler. Spoiling that "This happens!" is a spoiler. I'm fine location spoilers in the context of "Hey, did ya get to X yet?" in some cases, but I'm not a fan of anything more specific than that.

He's being very stupid to be honest. I really hate spoilers aswell but thats just being a bit hysterical.

I think its when you spoil a major plot point, ending or twist. The premise of the game is fine though, because that's usually revealed in trailers and on the BACK OF THE FUCKING BOX so i don't see what his problem with trailers is when he's gonna read the box anyway, at least i think he is.

Bruce Willis is dead.

I used to live with a friend who is something of an anti-spoiler. He had a habit of completing my newly bought games before I did, and when I played Bioshock I mentioned I was in Arcadia, and he said "Oh you're almost there. From there it's straight to the end game".

See what he did there?
Cool guy.

Kong falls off the Empire State Building.

For me, what constitutes as spoilers changes depending on the genre. If a game's an FPS or some other action-centric genre, I don't mind finding out the basic plot elements. I still don't like it when a big twist or the ending is revealed though. For example, I didn't mind that I knew the basics about Rapture when I started Bioshock, but I would have killed someone if they had told me that game's stunning revelation (well probably not "killed," but I would have at least verbally accosted the guilty party).

If it's more along the lines of a story-driven RPG like KOTOR or Mass Effect, I get a little less tolerant of any reveal. I don't mind if someone explains gameplay mechanics or establishes the general setting, but I don't want to know anything about the party members I'll meet or the choices I'll have to make.

... is his father, I swear, it's true!

To the topic. And speaking about Bioware...

Bioware promotional material for pretty much everything they have released since Mass Effect 1. They are notorious for using important plot elements in their trailers. Especially Dragon Age, and Mass Effect 2 to a lesser degree. For most games (that has a plot) I avoid any hype and trailers as much as I possibly can. Since in most cases the people who market games these days have no clue.

It's almost as if they don't want people to enjoy their games...

Your friend, he overreacted, as you did not say anything at all.

giving big plot twists and puzzle keys always annoys me. I also hate it when people tell me in an rpg what choice to make and why.

The turn or reveal is usually a big thing that shouldn't be spoiled. Key things not given away in the trailer, on the box, or in the opening minutes should be treated carefully. The reveal in KotOR would be something that one has to avoid spoiling. Compare it to PoP: Sands of Time, it says on the box that you unleash the sands and screw everyone over. It's common knowledge and therefore can't be spoiled.

The bigger and more important it is the less should be said about it.

Well the less you know about a story driven game before you play it the better since you go into not knowing what to expect, of course its a gamble since the game might not be good.

If it's beyond the first couple of hours of a game I'd consider it a spoiler. I'd never openly spoil a game less than about 6 months old, and for some biggies like THAT twist in KOTOR, I'd never ever reveal that outside spoiler tags.

As for older stuff like "Sephiroth kills Aerith", or "Samus Aran is a girl", they're basically public domain now. Anyone with any familairity with gaming knows about those by now :)

To be a spoiler it has to ruin a reveal, not just give a detail. Examples for Dragon Age, behind a spoiler wall just in case someone disagrees and has their game ruined:

"Party members can leave the party if you piss them off" - I'm pretty sure the game makes a point to tell you this early on, so it's not a spoiler.

"the game has multiple endings depending on your choices" - closer to a spoiler, but this is a bioware game, right? I mean you'd have to be blind to not see that coming

"The Archdemon is the final boss" is closer, but probably isn't a spoiler. You expect that from the moment it appears. Technically I guess you're spoiling the fact that there's no massive plot-twist that results in an entirely new big bad.

Details about which choices to make in order to get certain results - those are spoilers, And probably the worst kind. I can take knowing how something ends. I mean, we all know that a superhero movie has a 99.9% chance of the hero winning at the end, but we still enjoy the process. The bad kind of game spoiler in an RPG is the one that takes you out of the immersion. If you tell me how to navigate a conversation tree to get the best reward, suddenly I'm metagaming the conversation rather than actually role-playing the character. That's bad.

I hate spoilers as much as the next guy, but even then I know when there's a level as to how far you can go before being absurd from fear. I normally have a rule about games about to come out, I refuse to talk about it or visit their forums the last week before the game launches to prevent any spoilers. However, when StarCraft 2 came out, it was the last day before the week countdown, yet someone decided to post the ending in caps lock as a title in the general forums section.

Now, Blizzard moved quickly to delete this, but as you can tell, the damage was already done. Many people knew the ending now, and I was one of them. And you can trust me when I say that waiting for twelve years for a game just to be spoiled the ending before I can even touch it, I was beyond pissed.

However, I learned that while the ending was lost, and that did suck indeed, there was still many parts of the story that I did not know yet. And regardless if they were to tell me them all, it wouldn't stop my experience from being any less fun.

Your brother is being a bit extreme. Almost every game that is launched lately has some sort of plot twist, or it'll be too bland or too black and white. Tell him, that if he is so afraid of spoilers, then he really needs to learn how to fight his fear, or let it consume him. Because trust me, once he starts to hang out with his friends more often later on, they won't be so hesitant to reveal any spoilers as you are.

My two cents, and good luck on the situation, my friend.

Usually for me it's "X dies / is Y's brother/father/mother etc" or "He was evil all along!" and similar clichés. Story elements I suppose. Other than that I don't mind watching trailers or hearing about abilities and weapons in a game.

Okay, I detest spoilers. I absolutely hate having a big plot twist ruined for me: I think it completely destroys the intent of the work and the artists that made it. That said, he's being absolutely ridiculous. That's just insane.
Couldn't say anything more about this. I don't absolutely hate them, but I do avoid them, and most games I've managed to avoid them successfully (I will never bother playing Final Fantasy VII though because everything has been spoiled).

Oh, that's a mistake. I had the one huge spoiler (you know which one I'm talking about) spoiled for me while playing the game, and it is still one of the best storytelling experiences of my life. I highly recommend it regardless of what has been spoiled.

Incidentally, I've also played the demo when it was ported to PC and was unimpressed. It's a game I'm sure hasn't aged well and will never live up to its hype.

On PC, yeah. But I played it for the first time only a few years ago, and it left that same impression on me. Just sayin': it's still worth playing. Heck, I just finished VI and loved it as well: aging isn't too much of a problem for these games.
