I might kill somebody if I was feeling a little peckish. Luckily, I live right near a morgue so...

I use to be all about revenge. Indeed for a while it was all i had to live for. Now that i'm older i have come to realize that death isn't a punishment. The fact that we all get to experience it at some point removes it from being a motivator of good or bad behaviour or a punishment. What i have come to understand is that what we experience in life is far more punishment. I use to fantasize over killing my enemies. Now i want them to live. Not because i'm less sadistic. In fact, i think i'm more so now. I want my enemies to live longer than they want to.

I want them to experience the pain, and helplessness of old age as their bodies and minds turn against them and rob them of any dignity they once had. I want them to look in the mirror and see themselves fade into something they don't even recognize. I want them to know and live with impending doom of a doctor telling them how much time they have left with a body that can do very little with it. I want them to bear witness to their loved ones being taken from them leaving them alone. I want them to try to remember better times, only to realize they can no longer recall them with any detail.

I want to hear about how their marriage fell apart and their spouse left them for an even bigger loser, took any kids they had away and hit them with child support payments that leave them destitute and homeless. I want them to lose their jobs and be left on the streets where they learn desperation which forces them to commit acts to survive they used to feel was beneath them. I want them to know the feelings of betrayal by learning about how their best friends had an orgy with their significant other. I want them to know every kind of betrayal and indignity and regret. In other words... I want my enemies to live.

Well, if someone killed my dog I know I would kill them (all of them if plural) without guilt or remorse.
It is one of the few things I'm certain of...in fact, I can feel my blood starting to boil just thinking about it.
For some reason, thinking of that makes me more angry than in the hypothetical scenario where it's a friend or family member. But then again, some of the people I know would probably do something to at least partially justify somebody trying to kill them. What could my dog possibly do, other than be awesome and be incapable of being voluntarily malevolent?

That's the deliberate side of things (money excluded).
In reality, just anger. In fact, a lot of deaths have been a result of little outbursts and spur of the moment scuffles (a conclusion renown hangman Albert Pierrepoint came to make at the tail end of his career).
All it takes is one bad fall or the lack of judgement (on behalf of either party) in a situation to die. Yes, life is a fragile yet resilient sucker that can survive the unlikely but fail to the mundane...thus, I have a small fear of manslaughter and try to be as diplomatic as possible in the face of conflict.

Relevant in two regards, it's bloody hot out and that first paragraph up there.

Maybe the same amount of stress that caused that teacher to beat that kid and blow a load in the hallway.
Or maybe I'd just end up doing that....can never know what you will do when you finally get set off the rails.

Well there was this one asshole who keyed my car the other day...

Ok serious? The usual me or them situation, loved ones in danger or harm, or many other lives in danger. Although no one can be 100% sure unless they've been in that situation, I think those would do it if any. Also, wartime? Then I think it would be a lot harder, because despite the whole common enemy thing, I hate to think that who I was fighting could very well just be someone like me, or someone a shitload better than me as a person.

Well I'd kill for Queen (or King, probably, by the time I'm older) and country. I would also kill in self defense with out much regret. If my best friend or brother were about to be murdered I'd murder the shit out of the guy who tried to murder them.

Would I feel horrible afterwards? Probably not, I could rationalize my actions, but I wouldn't feel good about it.

Never, unless it's a life threatening situation and I can't subdue him/her any other way. It's purely (and I do mean purely) a last resort for me, nothing else. As for my country, no I wouldn't. For any religion? No, cause I am an atheist. For any person? Okay, my gut instinct is "You crazy or something", but my heart says maybe. Again, only as a last resort.

For me, I honestly don't think that I could. Too many ideals. There's a little voice in the back of my head that would be shouting at me forever if I took a life.
Just to be clear here, are you talking about human life, or any animal life?

A human life. I should have clarified, and for that, I apologise.

A couple of months ago I had a dream about killing my neighbours.....I really really dislike them. Alas, there's no way I'd do it.

Would I kill someone who was threatening myself/my friends/my family? No idea, but I if I did kill someone I'm pretty sure I'd feel horrible afterwards.

I don't think I would ever actively seek out to kill someone, but if they broke into my house and it was them or me, I'll choose me every time.

For the fun of course.

But probably self defense of myself. Maybe if i just happen to walk by while someone is get gangbanged beaten up by a group i'll jump in, but wouldn't care if they survive or not.

For those saying that they couldn't/wouldn't take a life to save their own, in what context are we talking about? I mean are you saying that if you were offered the chance to save your own life of say natural causes by taking someone elses? Or do you mean if you were put in a situation where by a person or people wanted to murder you, that you would not kill that person to save yourself?

It depends on the situation for me, I'd like to say that i couldn't kill someone, but I honestly don't know if I could or not. I would never just take another life for the sake of it. I don't think serial killer would be a good life path for me. I'm not a good liar, well my conscience coudn't take it.

However, if in the case of self defence and its "kill or be killed" then i think i probably could kill someone.
Same goes if it means saving someone I love.
Also I have to admit if it was for some revenge thing where by someone i love was killed and the person got off, id say i could come up with some Dexter style revenge.

Its a hard one to call, I couldn't kill someone for my country, and have pretty strong veiws on the whole "I kill for my country" idealism. Someone who has a background in the military once told me that, that saying is just an excuse, 9 times out of 10 those that would kill for their country would kill for any reason what so ever, that they don't need a reason. Guess he seemed somewhat right.
Also, no matter how much we claim to be civilised, and how much we claim that we could not kill. We are all still animals, just a somewhat more intelligent species, its one of our basic instincts to kill. Like a mothers instinct to protect her baby, sometimes that means to kill, both in the animal world and the human. I think we are all capable of it, just put in the right situation and we are capable of anything.

Only to defend myself or others, and even then I would do my best not to actually kill them. That said, if I'm panicking (which I probably would be) and trying to stop them, I'll probably hit them pretty hard in the head, so I'd probably end up killing them.

Oh, I saw the title as "What would you drive to take a life" and I had ideas about running dudes over with a tractor or something. Now I'm disappointed.

Before I talked to a friend of mine, I thought I only could if my life or my families life was at risk. That has changed.

If the life of innocents was at risk (Innocents being civilians), I am pretty sure I could. Or at least, come to think of it, I could TRY (Its been years since my martial arts and I am badly out of shape). But yeah, that could make me kill someone.

Then again, things have changed. As I grew older I have grown out of pacifism. In a big way. I used to think that any form of violence was a sign of weakness. It is not. Far from it. Violence, in some cases, is one of the only signs of strength left. I once assaulted an authority because that authority assaulted an innocent. Does that make me bad? No. If the BNP or UKIP claimed power within the UK, I would join the riots. I would join whatever group was trying to remove them from power by whatever means. That is actually the main thing we talked about, me and that friend.

We were very, very stoned and some BNP propaganda came through the letterbox. After reading it we started talking about "What Ifs". What if they got into power, etc. And he pointed out that he would not run, because you cannot simply run away from bad things, you have to fight. If that happened I reckon I could kill in the name of removing them. That is just because I am who I am, I would be willing to fight and die for a cause.

I had a friend ship out to Libya. Dunno what happened to him. Fighting is something that some people just have to do.
