A casual gamer is someone who plays games occasionally, mainly in puzzle or music games.

They may love playing games, but wouldn't feel the need to grind to hit the level cap in Fallout, play through Call Of Duty on Veteran or learn all the ultra-combos on Street Fighter.
All genre of games can be considered hardcore. It's the player that plays the genre that determines the Casual/Hardcore area. For example...you said puzzle games are played by casual.
By the way, Puzzle games are my 2nd favorite genre of games. I play them like crazy.

You chose Fallout for "grind to the level cap [http://disgaea.wikia.com/wiki/Reincarnation_(Term)]"?

On-Topic: For me there is no "casual" or "hardcore", well, you're hardcore if you've finished both xbox/PS3 Ninja Gaiden games on Master Ninja but that's the only time I can actually say that someone's hardcore.

A Casual gamer is someone who casually plays games every now and then but isn't completely absorbed into gaming culture and its happenings?

I absolutely hate the term "Hardcore" gamer, it sounds so juvenile, can't take it seriously at all.

Imagine if you considered yourself a hardcore bird watcher? or a Hardcore Stamp Collector.

A gamer who only plays as a hobby.
What else would you play games as? I guess a very small minority would play for work, but that's very few "hardcore" games out there.

A hardcore gamer is someone that takes gaming seriously, we are hardcore not because we play, but because we are informed, we now the difference between genres, franchises, consoles, etc. We also can use a controller with more than 4 buttons.
A casual gamer is a person that plays from time to time, simple games. He is not aware about the differences between consoles (he barely knows his own console), he does not know about gens or franchises, and anything that requires to use more than two sticks to handle a 3d space would be to hard for him

Can a guy who geeks out the perfect endless setup on Plants Vs. Zombies be considered a casual?
Can a guy who plays CS:S, Tekken 6, Cod4, Gran Turismo 4 and DotA on a casually relaxed, yet competitive basis be considered hardcore?

Please guide me with your wisdom...
Thanks?

Could also be considered a gamer. PvZ can be taken to pretty high levels and if the individual is really seeking a challenge and plays at a respectable difficulty, then it counts.

Gamer, but not hardcore gamer. The hardcore gamer knows all the ins and outs, always tries to improve his gameplay and should be more than competitive.

Thanks for the input
My summary

Gamer - A person who plays video games.
Casual Gamer - A person who plays games casually, regardless of a game being "casual" or "mainstream".
Hardcore Gamer - A person who tackles himself with the depths of the game. Regardless of the genre or type. BUT MUST PLAY ON A REGULAR BASIS

Is it right to base these terms based on frequency and not game type?
I mean, if you spend more than 50% of your free time gaming and game on a daily basis, then you're bound to know the ins-and-outs of any game. Even if it's Cod4 or Mummy Maze.

Gamer - People who play games as a past time
Casual - People who play game TO past time
Hardcore - People who dedicate resources and time to play.

I therefore conclude that Pro Gamers who train on a regular basis are Hardcore
And that i am, a Hardcore as well, but perhaps, a level 1 hardcore(out of 5)

So far correct? Thanks for any additional input.

I don't think time spent on gaming is an important criterium. We don't all have an equal amount of free time.

Hell, if someone hypothetical can beat pro-players at Starcraft, without putting time into the game, he can call himself a hardcore gamer, even if gaming otherwise doesn't interest him.
Demonstrating sufficient skill and knowledge in a very challenging game scene is enough by itself to back a hardcore claim. You cannot argue with (demonstrated) skill.

The difference between normal/non-hardcore gamer and a casual is more nebulous.
Play only with cheats on or on low diffculty settings in an otherwise hardcore RTS, is casual.
A mom being repeatedly challenged by the simplest things in an easy web browser game is still a casual. Some degree of skill is also expected of a Gamer.
Knowledge of gaming is more important though, mostly because it's more telling, but also to be charitable. If someone has horrible gaming reflexes, but knows his facts and loves the hobby, he can call himself a gamer.

This thread died quickly. I thought you guys would be all over this one.
Well did you even use the search bar? This thread has been done into oblivion.

OT: A casual gamer is someone who plays games casually. That means that they don't play often and have never or do not play competitively in any sense of the word. They only go on pub servers and I must stress that they play casually thus being called casual gamers.

I don't necessarily think of it as being hardcore or casual overall, but as being hardcore or casual with specific games. Sure, you may only play Bejeweled and Halo, but you may be much more adept at them than someone that may refer to themselves as a "hardcore gamer." However, those other players are probably extremely adept and passionate with a library of other games.

It's all a question of time and motivation.

Casual gamer <-- Me, who sets games on the lowest difficulty and avoids hardcore gamers like the plague.

Hardcore gamer <-- Most of the population of Modern Warfare 2, who go out of their way to find casual gamers and flex their cyber muscles, because they're so awesome for their godlike FINGER DEXTERITY.
