Come now. Don't be so negative.
All people here are MOSTLY very pleasant...........Usually. <.<
But at the end of the day, we're all still gamers.
It's a continuation of the "fake gamer girl" joke, no worries.
If I actually hated this place, I wouldn't post here. I am motivated mostly by my own entertainment, partially by obsessions and compulsions, and a fraction by a tea kettle that knows too much. CS and I were both playing with the notion of the fake gamer girl taking advantage of gamers because reasons. I've found the rationale to be baffling, personally.
Now, you might say to yourself, "I don't consider myself a gamer." Fair enough, but we're looping back to the "semantics" argument.
You may not consider yourself a gamer, but it doesn't make much difference. When people hear you talk about video games (at least a certain kind, the kind one would play on consoles), they think of the same stereotypes, whether or not the word "gamer" pops up in their mind. Trust me, I'm a pro wrestling fan. I watched it religiously from like 1986 to 2008, and I've considered shelling out for Hulu Plus so I can watch it legally without cable these days. I've had people look at me like I was ignorant trailer trash for admitting it while reading Gore Vidal and Voltaire. Because, you know, those are definitely authors for the common man. A lot of wrestling fans on the internet try and define themselves as "smarts," from the carnie term for someone who's in on the ruse, or "smarks," a portmanteau of "smart" and "mark." It doesn't change the fact that they like wrestling and the mere mention will evoke the same responses whether they say they appreciate the "artistic combat" or they think Hulk Hogan and John Cena are unbeatable in real life.
Those negative connotations you, CS and others have talked about? They come up when you mention video games whether you use the label or not. Unless it's, like, Angry Birds or SomethingVille. And our little community has terms for them. Filthy casuals. Even if we don't use the words, we (as a group) tend to talk about those types of games with disdain. Ermagerd, something my mom would play!
Similar with the Call of Duties or Maddens. Dudebros! Which, admittedly I like saying, but mostly because it's funny rather than because I think people are actually "dudebros." One of my XBL friends is a 40 year old mom who plays shooters and so I call her a dudebro. Why? It's amusing to me.
Whatever we call ourselves, the end result is pretty much the same. We are, to the world, gamers. And a rose by any other name is just as likely to teabag your corpse and call you a ******. At least, I think that's how the Shakespeare quote goes.
