Super happy that Gone Home won two award. No Man's Sky looks amazing. I like that The Last of Us won an award too.

Other than that, not really anything to get excited about.

I heard No Man's Sky may be a PS4 exclusive though?
Rock Paper Shotgun reported on the announcement and stated that they have hands-on impressions coming up. Since they only cover PC games it's safe to assume it will be PC as well.

Meh.

A couple reveals got me pretty hyped. No Man's Sky and Tales from the Borderlands seem initially promising. Nintendo's showing was pretty disappointing, but Nintendo shooting themselves in the foot seems to be a fact of life at this point. Aside from that, I don't think the proper amount of fanfare was given to many of the games. Game of the Year passed by with barely a passing glance, and the Game of Thrones announcement was something that could have been used in TellTale's interview to build on the fresh hype of TftB.

It was pretty blatantly obvious that Joel McHale didn't want to be there, and some(read: all) of the "jokes" fell flat, aside from one or two of the video cameos. It seemed like some people speaking forgot to look at their scripts.

I didn't mind the studio very much. A small venue doesn't necessarily mean a bad show. This was just a bad show that happened to be in a small venue.

So, long story short, not a good event by any stretch of the imagination. Fingers crossed next year is somewhat bearable.

Word of advice T ConX,I'm sure you meant no offence but there is a rather large transgender community on these forums and some (if not most) of them find the word tranny offensive.
OH NO! Someone call the hurt feelings police!
It's strange how many people think that being an asshole makes them a persecuted target of the political correctness mafia. If you're standing around flinging your shit at passersby, you really shouldn't get offended when someone politely asks you to stop.

All I'm saying is that word has a lot more potential to be offensive than you realise.
Edit: Removed a thing to lessen useless internet arguments.

Oh great, a non inflammatory VGX thread unlike the last one.

As usual it was cringeworthy.

Even more so than usual.

I guess the nominations were okay, but it felt a whole lot like the only winners in the show were overhyped games. GTA V being game of the year was the biggest joke.

Also, why the hell would you make a Causal game category?

And going off of that, It's a crying shame that FE: Awakening didn't even win best RPG.

Shit, that game was golden. Still my all time favorite game of the year-yes, even above Pokemon X and Y.

the last one was fascinatingly bad. This one was just BORING. The most interesting thing the entire time was seeing the meltdown over Donkey Kong Country and after that it was just dull and stupid crap for the rest of the show. I'm pretty sure we won't see another one of these after how awful it was. Seriously, when Spike decides to air reruns of COPS over your show you know you've screwed up
Spike VGA's should of been shut down the moment a masterpiece like Okami gets nominations in every single category, and loses to every single one to bro shooters.

Not only was that an insult to the entire industry, but it was a premonition to what last gen was to basically become.

Was bad, but expectedly bad.

Joel obviously hated it. Which I kind of applaud since, well, I hate it and it made everyone else uncomfortable.

Awards were standard, disappointed but not surprised with Gone Home winning.

Smosh and PewDiePie All of the comedic acts were cringe-worthily bad.

The only thing I was even remotely interested in were the Telltale reveals.

EDIT: Oh we're in full arguing about gender politics mode already? Lovely.

Bad example sorry, but I was trying to explain how a small joke (or word) can mean a lot to some people. I've removed it from my original post as to not blow this up to a full blown argument when we should be talking about video-games.

That border house blog link has the reasons behind why offence was taken with the joke and I'm afraid that it's much more serious than you seem to realise.

Geez. You might as well say black people have no reason to get pissed off at "******" jokes than.

The only people overreacting here is you and a few other users. Everyone else was kindly pointing out that the word in question has a lot of bad connotations for Queer people.

This is my first time watching the VGX and I only watched half, but I thought it was an actual show with a stage and audience and stuff?
I thought the awards were probably fair and correct and agreed with most of them, but I agree that the host was really not fitting, he obviously didn't want to be there. I liked the way he was more sarcastic and reserved but it was to such an extent that he didn't seem to care at all.
Also, the 'world premiers' were kinda dumb, most were for games we already knew about like Titanfall, Destiny and that new Nintendo game. I liked the way Borderlands Tales and No Man's Sky were announced (they both look amazing) but I think more big game announcements would have been cool.

Where 2011's show was offensive, 2013's was just straight up boring. (watched it 30min in)
I didn't care for the winners or the trailers this time. Unless it was Telltale's announcements, those were slightly interesting.
I liked Joel's flaming of the whole program but man he could have at least put on some emotion.
And the humor was either non existent or cringe.

Aaaaaaaand Samuel Jackson wasn't there.
-42/10. Pull the plug Spike, just pull it.

From what I garnered from watching the VGX, whoever replaced Samuel L. Jackson as a host learned humor from a freaking textbook on accounting. The only way I can describe how horrible this was is that in the entirety of those 3 hours, the only thing I found enjoyable was Trey Parker and Matt Stone's appearance. They only appeared for less than a minute and yet they were still five times more hilarious than the rest of this show's content. The reveals weren't that exciting at all.

It was that bad.

It's a bit hard for me to stay mad at them considering how the show has been reduced to a small studio with nothing to show. The most talked about thing was the DKC demo and I bet you anything Nintendo is going to have a Direct with big announcements. The VGAs are pretty a failed experiment so it's about time to bury them.

Well considering there was a massive speculative-thread over on NeoGaf [http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=720854] which came to the conclusion that they would show off Cranky Kong, I thought it was fucking hilarious. It's part of the fun of these events really, like following a Coachella thread on a Daft Punk forum just in case they make an appearance. The hype-train is good fun.

To be honest, I didn't really "watch" it. I livestreamed it yeah, but I paused it, would watch an episode of some tv series I missed (like Arrow), then would check to see if anything was catching my interests.

I have to say though, the trailers for this VGX were kinda lack luster. No real surprises save Tales from the Borderlands and No Man's Land. Every other world premiere trailer wasn't anything special. The Division talked about dynamic lighting and nothing else, the Witcher 3 looked nice and impressive, but didn't show too much, Destiny seemed to be a lot of what we've already seen, and it was all cut together kinda rough I think. Sure, sometimes the trailers are short and they want you to check out the full version the next day or something, but the trailers weren't even like that. No big reveals? Even just a short CGI teaser? They've shown Skyrim, Batman, Mass Effect, Dark Souls 2, MGS V, and others in the past, but what happened this time around? I think that's the most disappointing thing about this VGX.

Everything else is just sort of a weird mishmash that didn't flow right. Having a sit down and talking with some of the developers is cool, but since none of the reveals were that amazing, I didn't much care for it, especially if they are talking all vague like with Tales from the Borderlands. Showing live Demos is cool too, but I think the VGA's have always done better with trailers that show gameplay for X amount of minutes in a sequence; just a personal opinion. If you are going to live demo something, at least don't make it Donkey Kong? I'm sure its going to be a fine game, don't get me wrong, but I think we know how Donkey Kong plays at this point. Not only that, but THAT is the game Nintendo is going to show as a big reveal? It could be anything else except a Mario game (or maybe a Kirby game, but I don't play them that often so...), and it probably would have been better.

The hosts didn't seem to have chemistry whatsoever, and honestly looked like they hated to be there. Whatever jokes I heard just were...bad. Their dead eye expressions just made me not want to watch. Some people seem to like that Joel guy because he knew that the show was "bad" and his disinterest and random comments seem to make it a good show because of that. Can't really say. I liked the overall look of it (for so reasons, the moving gear pieces grabbed my attention), although maybe they should actually have an audience or something so the cameramen don't have to be the ones to make noise. Not a big one or anything, just something. From what little I saw, they whole thing looked a bit rushed, even when compared to some E3 stuff Spike has done in the past.

TL;DR: The reveals weren't that amazing, and barely any surprises with trailers not showing anything new. The hosts look like they hated it, and the whole thing looked very rush when compared to previous VGA's. Looked better and more serious, but they had almost nothing worth sitting through. Live demos and talking to developers is a cool addition, but maybe need better direction or less vague things to talk about. Again, I was just casually flipping back and forth, speeding through the parts that looked boring. I didn't sit through the whole 3+ hours.

Seriously though, the lack of any super amazing reveals I think hurt the show. You could probably ignore a lot of the annoying parts if they had good things to show, but they didn't.

This may be the Community fan in me showing, but I'm glad Joel was there, otherwise it would have just been a 3 hour long set of commercials.

And a few times, he did seem to have genuine interest which is more than I can say for Keighley.

But yeah, most of it was pretty awful. Particularly the "viral" parts. All of them were absolute horseshit.

I know I'll be back next year though, if just to watch the trainwreck.

I have stopped watching those after the last few ranged from disappointing to awful to WTF is this shit. Really any awards show these days seems to pay lip service to the idea of what an award is. I prefer the awards given out by what I feel are more close to home venues like websites I respect... I've lost a lot of respect for Spike as anything worth a damn so when they instituted their own VG award show... I was sketchy about it anyway. I really don't feel happy I was right in my obligatory lucasfilm "Got a bad feeling about this...".

I waited until it was finished before checking out the announcement videos and trailers on Youtube. I think the whole award thing in general is a dumb idea, and creates a divide in a very opinion based medium.

The only good part was Joel shitting on the video game industry. Without him the show would have been like everyone other VGA, except with no audience.
