I saw a double page spread in a Newspaper a while ago about Trolling. They actually interviewed a troll, and he said that he sought to "make people laugh but make them hate me (him) at the same time".

Trolls get the same thing as griefers when when they troll. I figure it's sort of like a sadistic satisfaction or feeling of superiority over someone relatively helpless.

Because it's hilarious how people on the internet lose their shit over small things.

The best deterrent would be to not have stupid people.

As long as this is true

And this exists as a collective mindset

Trolling will continue to exist. Accept it akin to a force of nature on the internet. In the words of Jon Postel: "Be conservative in what you send; be liberal in what you accept."

A possible deterrent to casual trolls would be requiring a fee or a credit card to register for a forum. Note, this won't stop the motivated ones, though. You may be able to reform a troll if they suffer from too much 'Troll's Remorse', no guarantee though.

Edit: While I may not personally agree with what they do, I'd be remiss to say that I didn't appreciate the lulz from some quality trolling. While Encyclopedia Dramatica was still up, I'd always get a laugh from lolcow entries. Suffice to say: Seeing people be called out on their bullshit is always funny.

Of course you can't reform a troll, unless you do a Clockwork Orange style program. Trolls are people who take Schadenfreude to the next level, and that kind of enjoyment from others' misfortune is not something that will go away, it's a part of someone's personality. "Corruption is no different than cancer. Cut out the tumors, but fail to treat the source, and you're buying time at best." It's the reason why I play Call of Duty multiplayer, because it is immensely satisfying to listen to someone raging incoherently at me over their headset after I kill them when they're two kills away from a Nuke.

Because it's fun to sit and picture the victim having an aneurism. Plain and simple. Good example would be grenade trolling in Zombies, made even better when you don't have to picture it when they have a mic

I do it all the time, for fun. The gullible ones think I'm serious every time !

Trolling is the downside to total freedom. In very few other mediums of communication (in fact the internet is quite possibly the only medium) there exists a total sense of being able to communicate without caution. Something that might be said in reality could be percieved as offensive regardless of context or content, which is a possibility which causes people to reconsider what they think for the benefit of others.

Trolls exist because some people see the internet as a big massive wall to draw cocks on, but if a few badly punctuated and misspelt metaphorical genitalia is what I must suffer in exchange for a medium that defines freedom of speech and freedom of thought, I'll happily accept it. After all, I could just rickroll them if they get too annoying.
