I am intrigued by Sutherland's performance, I haven't heard it but the idea that hayter wasn't used just mystifies me, I heard a few words in the YouTube video - "kept you waiting, huh?" - but it wasn't really enough to draw conclusions from.. He seemed to lack the growling edge to his voice that was presumably why hayter got the job in the first place

It's more the Kiefer's voice fits with the acting. The facial expressions and that are vastly superior to previous games, and such an over-emphasised voice like Hayter's wouldn't fit I don't think. Kojima said he chose Kiefer for reasons along those lines.

The issue is that Snake barely talks, which is a shame, as Kiefer is genuinely fantastic.

Fair reasons, I think I will revisit the MGS 4 cutscenes before I decide if his voice really is such a mismatch for the style of the cinematics.

He was great when he use to say "EA SPORTS, IT'S IN THE GAME"

4's actually the only one I haven't played (damn PS3 exclusivity), but having watched a few scenes I felt that Hayter's voice didn't seem to adequately portray an elderly man. That said, I love the man for the first 3 MGS games, Snake Eater in particular.

Ah, well, looking back I have to say 4's voice acting isn't too great. And I think I remember thinking it wasn't too great when I first played the game. When he was playing old snake his voice did sound a bit craptastic. I was also disappointed by the graphics of the opening cinematic, I went in to that game thinking I would be seeing the spiritual successor to the graphic pioneering of MGS 2 and 3, but in many ways it was underwhelming.
