What do you collect?

Just curious what other types of oddities fellow escapists collect.

Hubby and I prefer gnomes. Yes, gnomes. Garden gnomes, ceramic gnomes, resin-cast gnomes, yard gnomes - gnomes in any form and most things gnome-related... And NOT dwarves or mini elves...

We feel they are the keepers of our burrow and protect us from our five cats.

After all, I AM The Gnome Queen.

Yeah, I think we collect gnomes and cats. And, I'll admit, I collect books - just now e-books instead of the old fashioned kind.

And I think we collect tech. Like our five computers; that allows me to sit across from you at a table and immediately reply when you say something like, "I just posted a topic over on The Escapist in Off-Topic."

Yeah. Gnomes, cats, tech. Check!

(OK, one more guilty pleasure - I collect games. On Steam now.)

Nothing really. I don't see much appeal for collecting something for the sake of collecting it.

I'm building up myself a nice dragon statue collection. I also have a pin collection, I have no idea why but it has come in handy at times.

I collect Special Edition video games, only recently really started, but I've got about 10 now. Also Militaria, I pop into surplus stores and browse Ebay for bargins, mainly British Militaria, but if there's something cool from another nation for a steal then I'll buy it.

I collect 19th-century (and earlier, if I can find/afford them) editions of Shakespeare. I started with an 1896 Titus Andronicus.

I don't consider myself an obsessive collector, but the last thing I was into collecting was old comic books. Not necessarily rare ones as they are so difficult to find, but still ones from the 40s and 50s. I just love the old paper and original illustrations. I haven't had the time to continue expanding my collection for quite awhile now, but I haven't lost any interest in how I view and value them.

All of those are necessities. Video games are not. That is usually what makes one a "collector" - we don't "collect" food for pleasure, we obtain it to eat it. Video games have no practical, utilitarian purpose - you amass them for pure pleasure.

I *have* been told that I "collect" rare teas from time to time, because I like expensive, exotic tea... and own a lot of it. So I suppose one could "collect" food like one "collects" wine if your reason for obtaining it is to keep a large stock for hedonistic purposes as opposed to utilitarian ones.

I think you can definitely collect clothes - I've dated women who collect way, way more shoes than they will ever need.

I think the better question is what DON'T I collect. Warhammer (WFB and W40k), MtG, Star Wars CCG, Vinyl Records, Soccer Jerseys...the list goes on.

I collect vinyl records. Classic albums and anything else that takes my fancy. I have to try not to get too into it as far as originals and mint condition records go as it would be bad for my bank account.

To me, collecting is not simply buying more than one of an item, it's having a deep passion for what you collect.

I would not consider overeaters to be "collectors" of food, although that is a funny image.

For example, gnomes have been our moniker for a while (about 7 years) which came about during an old tabletop D&D game. It simply 'stuck' and we've collected gnomes since then. Every time I see a gnome in a store, I feel a need to stop and acknowledge it, even if I don't buy it. Since hubby and I were deemed "The Gnomes," our house has always been referred to as The Burrow, and we can be quite gnome-like at times.

And our friends have to explain to their friends what they mean when they say, "I'm visiting The Gnomes."
