So I just finished watching V for Vendetta for the trillionth time, a movie that I enjoy more and more every time I watch it, and I got curious as the credits were rolling, "what kind of things do other people consider profound?"

Oxford defines profound as:
<quote=Copypasta from Oxford dictionary>1 (of a state , quality, or emotion) very great or intense:
ex: profound feelings of disquiet, the implications of this discovery are profound
(of a disease or disability) very severe:
ex: a case of profound liver failure
2 (of a person or statement) having or showing great knowledge or insight:
ex: a profound philosopher
(of a subject or idea) demanding deep study or thought:
ex: expressing profound truths in simple language
So basically, what kind of things have you come across, that you find profound?
They can be written or spoken quotes or even ideas, I am not picky =)

The two that always get me are:
Thinking about how big the universe is
<quote=V>Ideas are bulletproof

This was my first thought. Kinda. My main question about the universe is pretty simply 'Why'? Why does it exist, why did the 'big bang' ever happen? Why couldn't there just be nothing instead of a universe? If there was nothing, where would it be? Kinda hard to get any sort of idea in your head about universal phenomena like that, because we can't relate it to anything, and never will. That sort of thing doesn't exist and can't be explained in the simple 4 dimensions that we inhabit. And I think that is just marvellous, don't you? So strange, so inexplicable.

However, I'm not usually a deep thinker, and I like thinking about simpler things. I gave up amateur philosophy a long time ago, and I'm a lot happier for it these days. =)

lol, thinking about what we cannot think about... that tends to either give me a headache, or just throw up my hands and go kill people in CoD.

That's why I've come to a conclusion that explains everything and never think about it again.

(of a subject or idea) demanding deep study or thought:
ex: expressing profound truths in simple language
That one seems the most appropriate to me, although I have no problem with the other definitions.

Read the graphic novel, please. The film is nothing compared to the original work.

Edit: As an example, I find evolutionary theory both challenging and intellectually rewarding.

"No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee."
-John Donne

Yeah, I guess I'm a bit of a sentimentalist.

This is the big one.

I like it because of all the different possibilities. What if there are Gods? Nothing like the religious version, but what if there is a presence of some sort that pretty much transcends the laws of physics and thought. Something that started it all.

And then you think if that was the case, what started that?

Also, the thought process sometimes gets me. I don't think Science will ever fully be able to explain how a memory works.

I like the part where Tyrion dies and gets blown up on the train. That part is cool.

Most of Seneca's writings are fairly profound, especially on the subjects of nobility and suicide. Erica Jong's ideas on sexuality were profoundly affecting to me as a teenager. Max Planck's decision to consider quanta was both profound and serendipitous. Albert Camus's absurdity of existence is both profound and negates this whole thread (as the absurdity he is referring to is the search for meaning in a universe which has none).

One of the most profound quotes I know of (and one of my favourites) is this one from Arthur Schopenhauer:

"A man can do what he wants, but he cannot want what he wants."

have you read the comic? I would highly recomend it, at least to see the story of V as it was originally intended

dont get me wrong..I LOVED the movie at the time, LOVED it...but after thinking about it...it doest sort of change things mabye not for the best, (though theres no denying hugo weaving was awsome as V)

not saying youll like the comic better (or that it IS better) just say it would be worth checking out

EDIT: oh and speaking of V for vendetta, I cant remember if this was said in the movie, but in the book V says somthing along the lines of

"they turned you into a victm, into a statistic, but thats not the real you...the past cant hurt you anymore"

and that really got to me, because as shown in V for vendetta and many other works (and real life) I was very unerved at the Idea of my life turning to shit due to some kind of world wide incident/disaster (much like Evey) ..and being a "victim" but that line certainly gave me some hope
