:p That's right, my fellow Escapists, I bring you yet another work-related thread. The question this time: "What do you do when there's one hour left in your shift?"

Are you in such a position that you can slink off and "hide" (or otherwise do anything but what you're supposed to) until it's time to clock out? Do you diligently finish up as much work as you can so as to make sure tomorrow everything's ready to go? Or are you like me and pull an "Office Space" for the vast majority of the day: "When I get to my desk I just space out for a little while..." "Wait wait...space out?" "Yeah, I just sit there staring at my desk...it looks like I'm working, but I'm not. I do this for a few hours..."

Captcha: Move Mountains.
HA! With my motivation?! You wish!

Usually I'm in a fucking torpor from lunch onwards and I don't get a single thing worth discussing done. Like today!

When I did volunteer work at a hospital I mostly sat around doing nothing for the last hour. All the patients had been fed and the nurses were changing shifts, so there was pretty much nothing for me to assist with.
I'd either sit around chatting to a patient or answering any calls that came into the ward.

By the final hour, I'm usually working with a client doing the finishing touches for his/her portfolio and job interview. Man, you'd be surprised how many people have no clue how to do a job interview. Hell, I'm shocked at how many people in my reserve never had jobs their entire lives. The last half-hour is when I got nothing to do. I just shut down, tidy up then leave.

I define my own hours, and with few exceptions am perfectly free to come and go as I please. One of the few perks of an informal manual labor job. If I don't feel like working for another hour, I "punch out" and leave. So long as the overall work gets done in a timely manner it simply doesn't matter.

:p I like to spread my laziness out...I get bits and pieces of work done throughout the day. Buuuuuuuuut..........

Well, as my OP said, I'm certainly not gonna be moving any mountains. :p

It's like you know it's my last hour right at this very moment! Anywho, actually working the hospital biz as an xray assistant, I usually get one or two more transports done. After that I get to kick back and enjoy being lazy for thirty mins or so. Hospitals are much easier going than most people would know.

I wish I could do that since I'm constantly doing stuff like putting cables away and moving things back all for safety reasons, or getting things set up for the next day to make my life easier when I get into work.

The only good thing is that I leave when I'm done and not by a set time.

Depends on the day but I'm usually the kind of person that needs to finish everything off. I'll be watching the clock and counting the minutes, but I'll usually be working right to the end if there's work to be done.

My work isn't really set up like that. Basically, I have a time when I'm supposed to be there then I can leave once they say...I can leave. Basically they'll let me go once most of the product has been pushed onto the shelves. Depending on who's manager that night they'll either let me go once 85 or more percent of the stuff is done or, make me stay and clean up after everyone. Either way I'm out of there before the back-stockers. I don't really know when I only have an hour left in my shift is the long and short of it. When I know I'm close to going home though, I can kind of give myself an extra few minutes if I'm asked to 'check for overstock' in the departments where I stocked.

...What exactly do you do? I would really be interested in working...well, anywhere where I can do nothing for the last hour...or two depending on when you take your lunch break.

I stay pretty busy until I'm done, and I'm thankful for that. I've had jobs where that wasn't the case, and that last hour or so could be pretty painful.

I don't usually have "just one hour left" at my job, it's more like I leave when I feel like my work for the day is done. Some days I leave a lot later than other, just depends on how busy I am. We do get to play games from 5-6, though! I guess if I got in early enough, I could count that sort of.

Racing around frantically trying to get everything tied up and shipped out for the day.
