Yes. Sorry if it'd sound harsh or cold but I'd love to see those spiders. I love spiders. Your description just made them seem so cute I want to pet them.
Anyway - try one of those self-hypnosis videos/audios. Any really, but perhaps there is something for sleeping, specifically. There are loads all over the internet. They all start off by making you relax. And they do indeed relax you - just follow the instructions.
Also, IndomitableSam's suggestion is great - just imagine something. I often find it helps me avoid a dream that woke me up. I don't usually do it with myself, though, the most classic one I use is Pinko.
But that's because I was quite young when I started practising this. But it could be anything you wish - for best results read a book, watch a movie, a TV show, play a game or whatever before sleeping (or pick something recent) and then start thinking about that as you try to go to sleep. It usually helps and I dream stuff related to whatever I picked.
Another thing that helps me sleep is trying to clear my head of all thoughts. But I need to concentrate on something to do it. It's weird. For best results, I prefer a constant sound that is there, say, ticking of a clock, or sound from a pipe - as long as it's doesn't really change (it's best if it's monotonous) I just concentrate on the sound and let all other thoughts go. It's quite relaxing too. If there isn't anything, I can also go with counting. Not sheep - that doesn't matter (unless you wish to visualise sheep, I suppose) - just counting in my mind. It's fairly monotonous and it works to distract me from everything else.
And there is always rain. I love listening to the rain - it always makes me feel comfy and relaxed. That's why some amazing person (I'm fairly sure it was God, or at least a god) created Rainymood [http://rainymood.com/]. I sometimes just open that and go to sleep. It's awesome.
When I can't sleep I will often watch a movie or a TV show that I really enjoy, like Law and Order: Criminal intent or Lucy the daughter of the devil. I find that it relaxes me enough that I will fall asleep. Failing that, I will read a book.
Huh... I wonder why... though how does that send you to sleep? Would've thought you'd watch another ep or three... -_-
OT: I game... if I want to bore myself to sleep, I'll play an RTS battle on easy and make it last as long as possible, the only problem being I wake up with keyboard face and the sound of defeat ringing in my ears.
Though once, I set up a perfect defensive ring while playing C&C:RA2, fell asleep, woke up a few hours later and IT WAS STILL FUCKING THERE!!
If you can't sleep, you're better off not watching a screen to pass the time. I'd suggest listening to anything or reading.
In the long run it's also decent to do some exercise, over the short term you'll get a pick up but after a while you'll feel tired and sleeping should come easily.
I spend a lot of time awake, but since I don't have many timetable commitments at the moment I just let it run it's course. I do know how the OP feels, one of the things that prompted me to get medical help was the fact that I could no longer sleep without waking up multiple times with a direction-less panic.
If it's that bad you can always simply skip a night of sleeping and then go to bed in the mid evening of the next day. If you're not used to it it will make your day hell though.
I have Melatonin supplements that are available in the vitamin aisle at a grocery store. They put me right to sleep and provide a very natural sleep cycle unlike medical sleep aids.
Read. I usually read a a book from the huge stack of comic books I have by my bed. I also go to the bathroom, I know it sounds weird it really helps late at night for me
best thing to do to get back to sleep naturally would be to pick up a book.
but if I can't sleep I don't fight it and find something to do. Usually it is pointless browsing. I too have dreams that I'd rather not have. Nothing ever bad really just emotionally draining and I'd rather not wake up from an unpleasant one. Once I was on the wrong end of the scene from American Psycho where Christian Bale is wielding a chainsaw in the nude. yeah....
Usually I just roll around in bed. I might start drawing or writing if I'm bored. I also always keep a soda nearby, and I drink it until I get to sleep.
Speaking of masturbation, though...*opens up hentai*
If I really can't sleep and haven't got anything pressing the next day, I just won't sleep. I'll get up, cook and eat a meal, play games, just hang around the house.
