and somebody help me here if you can 'cos I just do not get it. Is there an overall universe that FF is based in? .[/quote]

the way i tend to think of it is that the games merely were the name of ff as if it was a fanchise name and not a title it the number at the end that sets them apart of the previous or the next one in the series each game as far as im aware is brought across in a compeltely diffrent world (apart of x-2) so no there isnt an overall universe and to be honest that is what sets it apart from other games each new game brings across a new plot, new charaters and a new setting

I love the stat based systems, mainly sidequests and oh yes... a guilty pleasure of mine. I absolutely love grinding.

You love grinding really, i find it really tedious

There's some kick I get out of overpowering myself for a boss ahead, or after getting my arse kicked a couple of times, going back to an area, training my arse off then coming back and wiping the floor with him or her.

I just like to cut out the "middleman" and never get to that point, saving myself some time.
I tend to try finishing games as quick as possible.
I work full time and don't have the time to 100% everything now. I also have too many games to get through.

I like them for all the reasons stated by people in previous posts, but I also like them because most of the characters have more emotions other than "grrrrr, die".

The stories are usually good and absorbing too, I've been playing a lot more JRPG's lately because of this. I like a storyline to be more than "4 soldiers are in a battlefield environment when suddenly they are betrayed by the very people ....blah blah blah", we all know how it goes from there

I wish i had to many games to get through but its rare for me to 100% complete everything in a game, but if i really enjoy a game ill try to do as much as possible until i get bored.

Great stories, fantastic art design, character development, complex battle systems. There's so many reasons to love them.

Oh and your comment about all characters being whiny teenagers? It's called character development. Let's take Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss as an example. He starts off as a spoiled whiny kid that bitches at every possible moment. But by the end of the game he's an incredibly capable man that's more than suited to being savior of the world. Character development needs to happen or else games aren't interesting. You can talk about characters whining and all that but characters with issues that need resolving is what development is all about.

Not every character can act like a grizzled hardened manly man of a space marine. I'd quit playing games if they all did.

Ano what you mean it can be refreshing to try something new, where you cant second guess whats going to happen.

I'll fnish a game, even if I hate it, just so I'm able to ***** about it without people saying "you didn't play it fully, you didn't give a chance".
I've finished both Red Faction: Guerilla and Oblivion.. two truely horrid games in what is otherwise a joyous time in the evolution of gaming.

I honestly can't tell you... it's a mix of strategizing in the combat, the great stories, the amazing music, the cool enemy designs, the unique art direction... I'm talking about Final Fantasy VI here because it's the best JRPG I've ever played, so this might not apply to all of them... the one thing I don't like is random encounters, especially when you really aren't in the mood to fight and you just want to get from one place to the next.

JRPG's are simplistic in design and feature the casual "hero saving the heroine" type of story to them. The love connections are generally stronger. Not to mention, every one that matters is designed to be "picture perfect."

I think it's built into culture. While Americans tend to dislike JRPG's, Japan thinks your Xbox 360 is a load of worthless trash.

I can tell you, I hated Mass Effect.

JRPGs are actually creative. They have a mix of fantasy and the modern world that you never see in WRPGs. You'd never see something like Persona 3 where you shoot yourself in the head to summon a persona to do battle for you, and you get more powerful by strengthening your social relationships. You'd never have the world of Spira mixing steampunk with more classical fantasy, where the fiends are the coalesced spirits of dead people (in a WRPG the best you'd get is a ghost) and
where Sin is the last Final Aeon used to defeat the previous Sin
. You wouldn't see a game mechanic like the junction system in Final Fantasy VIII which is purely a game mechanic rather than something that tries to simulate a fantasy reality. JRPGs are where all the innovation is. WRPGs are boring, the only good ones are the ones that are polished and developed. No WRPG with a small focus or scope will ever be good, it's only the highly polished sandbox WRPGs that ever have a hope of success.
mostly what he said.
I actualy get attached to the characters in jrpgs. wrpgs are good but you character is genraly soooo impersonal. i know you have to make your own story in wrpgs most of the time but sometimes i want a crazy hairstyled character with a backstory i dont have to create.

i personally prefer jrpgs to wrpgs because of the art styles, the stories, the characters and stuff. wrpgs, admitadly my experience is rather limited, seem to generally revolve around a lone hero saving a medievil style fantasy world, and while that can be fun, i prefer the range that is offered by jrpgs as apposed to wrpgs.
