Well, generally speaking, I don't. TWEWY was enjoyable to me due to the replay value, the adjustable difficulty curve, and the myriad character customization options.

When you're maxed out and the big numbers come up upon beating up an enemy.

Mmmm, satisfying.

Oh, and the art, too.

Plot, setting, characters, game play.

JRPGs are actually creative.
Mainly this. When I play a new JRPG I never feel like I'm doing the same crap with the same people in the same world.

I like pretty much everything about JRPGs. The art styles, the gameplay, the characters, the stories, the various combat systems, the music, the length and the hidden bosses that are in a lot of them.

I really don't like run of the mill JRPGs ( Almost anything made by NIS, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile)
What the hell do you mean by run of the mill JRPGs? Especially when you refer to NIS? How is Disgaea run of the mill? If anything, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest would be the run of the mill series as they are the biggest sellers and have heavily shaped the JRPG market for around 20 years now.

I have a burning hatred for NIS rpgs. ( Except the Disgea series. That is guilty pleasure. And even then I'm probably never going to buy another game again.)

Anyway, I like quirky rpgs, like Earthbound, Opoona, Shadow Hearts, the Shin Megami Tensei series, etc. Whenever I see a JRPG as of recently, it always reminds me of something. I hate that ( that's basically my definition. Whenever a game seems similar to another, to the point where if you took away the names, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference)

This is just personal, btw. NIS rpgs can be quirky I guess, but they take forever to beat, are usually not that different from each other, and are buggy as hell.

Little.

The art design almost always puts me off and the story is almost always a variation of the same tired tale.

I grew up playing them from snes on and they never really evolved.

I dont understand how people can enjoy JRPGs,iv never played one that iv actually enjoyed, so why are they so popular? And what do you personally like about them?
Great stories, fantastic art design, character development, complex battle systems. There's so many reasons to love them.

Oh and your comment about all characters being whiny teenagers? It's called character development. Let's take Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss as an example. He starts off as a spoiled whiny kid that bitches at every possible moment. But by the end of the game he's an incredibly capable man that's more than suited to being savior of the world. Character development needs to happen or else games aren't interesting. You can talk about characters whining and all that but characters with issues that need resolving is what development is all about.
The Tales series has always had excellent characters, Luke was probably one of my personal favorites.

Only certain JRPGs I like to be honest, it's very hit or miss for me. Like I've said, I love the Tales series, for their stories and characters, but honestly I find that alot of JRPGs have potential but the stories are kind of boring.

JRPGs do usually have distinctive art styles that makes it easy to separate from individual games from others though.

One problem I have with the genre as a whole that it's rare to find a game with voice acting that doesn't make you want to tear your ears out.

Edit: They also have some really good music and sound design.
