I imagine it to be a series of machines on each side of a giant chasm. Whenever something exits the chasm, the machine goes to work processing it and storing it. Some things burn up, while others combine with other things. Sometimes the machines jam up when something stranger-than-strange comes out of the chasm. If it does jam, the machines either burn it during the process, or it kick into overdrive and gets it done. The machine is controlled by Frederick William I as he amasses his Prussian army. The pieces from the machines are used to create weapons and bullets for the army, and eventually soldiers are made. When they are they stand in formation.
These soldiers are sometimes made to charge at that which they can destroy. They rarely die, but they do retire sometimes. But when they do retire, they sleep in their battle gear with a weapon under their beds, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.
