You help the people of the wasteland, by putting everybody in megaton out of their misery, destroying a cult and now theres the same amount of resources for less people overall. That and well everybody loves fireworks!
A stern talking-to from Dad. Oh and a ton of caps. Also I found it very amusing to use a sniper rifle to blow Tempenny over the railing of the balcony and watching him fall ten stories and splat. For some reason no one ever realizes he's dead.
