I'm just curious, Cthulhu and Lovecraft's Universe seems to be quite a big thing here on the Escapist. (And thank fuck for that...) However, how many of us have actually read his stories? If you have, what's your favourite of his stories? How many have read into the lore of the world?
I have. I've read the Necronomicon! (Not the actual; commemorative edition, otherwise I wouldn't be here talking to you.)
To set things off... Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

I haven't read any the stories, but I know he some tentacle old god dude who is pretty fricking evil. I tried reading some of his short stories, they bored me to tears. I have a hard to reading older lit it seems so slow compared to stories today.

I've always been partial to At the Mountains of Madness.

Quite some good stuff he has.

And stories today all seem to be written like B-Movies. Or am I reading the wrong books?

Back on topic, I haven't read any of Lovecraft's stories, sadly. What I do know is something about how Nyarlahotop is awesome in a scary kind of way. Something about making an entire town insane and thinking it was the end of the world using nothing more than pieces of metal and glass.

I've read lots of H.P. Lovecraft, two collections of short stories and At The Mountains of Madness. That said, my view in retrospect has been that while Lovecraft was a genius in his time, today he's very much overrated. Like many classical authors, the numerous flaws of his writing get a pass because the stories were so innovative. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful Lovecraft wrote the stories, modern horror would not be what it is today without him. That said, better authors have since come along, and it often feels to me like the primary purpose for reading Lovecraft is a combination of nerd cred and historical interest.

Don't know much about it. I looked at the Necronomicon at my local Hastings under the impression it would be a collection of H.P. Lovecraft's short stories, but it turns out it really was like some kind of demon-summoning thing; I don't know, I didn't look at it that hard. I put it back on the shelf at any rate.

That I can agree with. I haven't read a good 21st century book in a while now.

I'm about to find out what Lovecraft is like, as I am purchasing some of his books.

That Neil Gaiman, in between being an awesome author and nice guy, wishes he had thought up Ctulhu first.

And, of course, the tentacles, the 'deep beneath the waves', the Great Old One thing, et cetera, et cetera.

Cthulhu is a cousen of the elder gods who sleeps in sunken Ry'leh.
simply his act of waking up can drive creative and psycicly sensitive peoiple around the world insane and inspire riots around the world.
simply looking at him is enough to drive you mad.
he has a cult which is preparing the world for his return.
he dosnt hold a candle to the universe/diety/ultimadimensional being that is Yog Sothoth.
