It's downy therey. Just kidding, it's long and big, one of the largest countries in the world, very close to the South Pole, doesn't have the Pacific because of Chile. People in the south have been getting skin cancer because of ozone thinning, and the government once tried and failed to take the Falkland islands. And my broken arm started hurting again (went off a big jump, face-planted) so I'm just typing with one hand and will stop now.

Umm, what I know about Argentina....

Capital is of course Buenos Aires
Main language is Spanish.
A very large portion of the population lives in the capital
Tango was at least in part invented there.
Meat is a large part of the diet.
Stretches very far south - almost to Antarctica
The capital is right across the rio de la plata from the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo.

I don't know much more...
I visited once before, but I primarily go to Uruguay when I go to South America.

They speak Portuguese rather than Spanish and it touches all but two countries in South America (Those being Chile and Ecuador).

I know most of the basic geographical facts. Other than that I know you was steppin' on the Falklands and the Queen had to go put you back in place. Also you were like germany jr. during the second world war and fought against US supported Brazil. In fact after the defeat of Nazi Germany many of thier brilliant rocket scientists fled to Argentina and for a while you guys had the most advanced fighter jets.

And from what my Uruguayan friends tell me you're not much loved by other South Americans.

I onced played HOI:2 as Argentina and had brought the near entirety of south america to it's knees. That was pretty fun.

Used to be a Spanish colony, competed with Chile over the southernmost area of South America, was ruled by some dictators known as the Rosas in the 1800s, had it's share of troubhle with Napooleon IIIs France, it's capital was known for looking European in those days, it had it's spate with facism in the depression-WW2 years and later on in the 60-70ies, tried to invade the Falkland Islands and was beaten, and the national focus today is still on conquering the Falkland Islands whenever there's news that there might be oil around there.

Oh and I think there was also a famine in the country at some point in the 90ies but that's a blurry memory of a newsreport from when I was a kid so I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Two things immediately pop into my head when I heard Argentina:

-Starship Troopers
-The Falkland War

The South American war scenario is a fantasy scenario. In reality Argentina was neutral at first and at the very end they joined the allies too due to anglophilia in the upper class.

I should note that the Doomsday scenario, Downfall scenario and Armageddon scenarios are also fantasy. =P

Also pardon the double-post.

Well let's see, I have a brother-in-law from that country (married to my sister).
Your capital is Buenos Aires.
You celebrate Christmas in the summer.
You have a glacier in the south west called Perito Moreno that's supposed to be fabulous.
You beat Mexico in the last World Cup (and for some reason or another my sister was wearing your jersey the next day hmm...)
You gave us this guy...
The very funny Carlos Alazraqui
The majority are Roman Catholics.
Then there was that little bit of history between Juan Domingo Perón and Evita - I'll keep my thoughts about that topic to myself.

I there was a ruler named Juan Peron who started a trend in the 1930s of military coups that lasted until the '80s when Argentina finally became a democratic nation.
I know that technically that last statement is wrong because technically all the military coups were using part of the Constitution that gave the president incredible emergency powers, so the Constitution was never really thrown out.
I know that Evita Peron is a major cultural icon over there.
I kind of did a paper on the subject of the Argentine government and its democratization a couple of years ago for a comparative politics course.

Its located in South America(pretty much all of the bottom half, aside from Chili) and fought a small war with the UK over the Falkland Islands in the 80's(1982 I believe).

Other than that, I don't know much else.
That's actually all I know, too.

Rick Quashnick would like to have a word with you!!

OT: Diego Maradona is one of my favorite athletes of all time and I don't even like soccer. If Diego is any sort of representative of Argentina, then it's safe to say that you guys know how to party.
