I prefer stealth games that have you require to think about what your doing rather than doing a splinter cell and killing everyone with a silent pistol without anyone knowing your there, also Ai that have a reasonable intelligence so not stupid ones that I could shout and they wont know I'm there and not so they have superhero level of sight and hearing

The best stealth games I've played in the past few months were the Death to Spies games. They were essentially Hitman in a World War 2 setting, with a focus on espionage rather than assassination (although a few missions did require you to kill people). The presentation in the first one and the stories in both of them definitely left something to be desired, however.

MGS3: Snake Eater is the best stealth game I've ever played...can't say much for 4, since I don't own a PS3.

offhand is have to say metal gear solid, thief, and...batman are the best in my opinion each has a nonlinear approach to the solution(sneak by or kill everyone in the room before they figure out there dead) and you do get some pretty awesome tools in each of the respective seris to accomplish said goals

I like a stealth game that allows me to mess with my enemies. Think the Hologram Ability from Halo: Reach. There is a reason I love that ability. I like to trick someone into focusing on something else and then either killing them or slipping by them.

The Hitman Series, Oblivion / Fallout, Splinter Cell (Well, the later ones,) Assassin's Creed basically any game where I can do stealth but don't HAVE to.

I know this may seem weird to bring up in a thread about stealth games but what I mean is that what shoots a stealth game dead for me is a stealth game that punishes you with an insta-game over if your caught. Though it can be fun to add a bit of tension now and then with one.

That's why I like the mentioned series, you CAN do stealth, you can run around like a shadow and ghost people without them ever knowing your there but if you are caught you don't just curl up into the fetal position and give up you whip out some weapons and proceed back into stealth mode by removing the identifiers requirement to have a pulse.

Stealth in TF2 as a spy is really fun. Especially when you are really good, and almost everyone on the opposite team goes into a violent panic each time they see anyone.

Well I love Assassins's Creed (all of 'em)
I love the fact that I can take out like 20-25 guards without raising an alarm, and then killing my target ... I know the game doesn't support that, but who cares, I wanna kill people from the shadows :D

I liked the stealth elements in VTM: Bloodlines as it was a feasible option to most encounters and maps in the game. Similarly Fallout3/Oblivion have a reasonable system that does allow for player skill (and skills). The first couple of Splinter Cells were quite good too.

Hitman games have always had a cool stealth element too. Using disguises and hiding in cupboards, stashing bodies, being in places 47 isn't supposed to be in, and so on. But I think the Thief series have done it best. With cool AI, realistic consequences for Garret's actions and detail....what floor surface, how much light, how alert is the guard, calculating routes, using deception and cunning to sneak past and so on. A single wrong footstep can lead to failure. I found at times I was actually holding my own breath whilst a guard tried his damndest to find me.

Anyone who suggests Assassin's Creed as being a stealth game has not played an actual stealth game. The extent of stealth gameplay in it is avoiding easily dispatched guards.

I've only really enjoyed stealth in two games: Sly Cooper, and Crysis 2. I imagine I only enjoyed the second one because it's so damn easy.

the Splinter Cell and Thief games are the best stealth titles IMO. The thing that makes stealth based games good is the atmosphere and tension created by stalking around in the shadows, as well as realistic stealth physics.

Also I would add Assassins Creed in there as well, but I think it needs more stealth based play, like Thief.
