Since we won't be getting any real tactical challenges or genuinely good action sequences in our modern (action)RPGs, I have to settle for the complete mediocrity package.

Much choice in character builds.

Steady progression in special abilities and equipment.

Tiny binary branches in the storyline (choices & consequences).

Atmosphere (music, pretty gfx and dialogue that doesn't suck too hard).

A good story, interesting system, good people to play it with and PEN and PAPER and some DICE! There is no RPGs on computers or consoles. They're just adventure games bastardized with mechanics taken like leveling.

I'm pretty sure you have to go by the common flawed and broad definition of the RPG, since this is a computer & video game site afteral.

I'd also argue that from the gamist POV, the difference between tabletop and computer can be very small.
None of this silly thespianism, just challenges to overcome. Mostly combat.

Something like DA:O, with the large world and focused plot, but lots of side quests, many of which relate to the main plot. Excellent characters and dialogue, good mechanics, and a cluttered inventory. Yeah, it was a bit of a pain, but I prefer it to a ME2 or DA2 inventory system any day.
DA:O in my opinion is one of the greatest games I've played in a long time, with the exception of the dragging on of some parts (Mage tower *Cough*Deep Roads*cough*). The controls worked well on the PC, it wasn't a button spamfest like its sequel, its characters and dialogue were brilliant as always, and whilst its story was highly stereotypical, it was done that well the I honestly didn't care. Innovation is cool, but only when it works.
I also despise dialogue wheels, morality systems that cut options off based off which morality you are, and having a shared cooldown.
I also like lots of abilities to use, preferably each of them useful.

I like to either play as 1 customisable character, or a tem of them. I dont like having to choose a team of 4 out of 8 characters thatI have spent ages getting how I want!! I like games like FF5 where you have 4 characters throughout!

I also like to be left to my own devices! I don't like lots of interuptions in the gameplay telling me what to do or where to go! I'm playing Golden Sun on the DS at the mo, and its running a bit slow for me at the moment! (And I have just had to make a member of the team redundant!!) Hopefully it opens up a bit soon, and doesn't stay so linear, or with so many lengthy pauses telling me what I had already worked out would be the next step!


EDIT: Oh and optional side quests are a must... especially if its the way to get the best equipment at a natural pause in the game! (normally 3/4 of the way through!) I like creative sidequests too, like those in FF7,8 and 9, where you can obtain weapons, cards, Rare Items, Character story conclusions (scenes) and even characters! (Heres looking at you FFVII)

what i want in an RPG just a remake of FF7 >.<
but yeh needs huge overworld lots to explore. colourful anime themed graphics but a darker resolve to the story. somekind of huge demon to defeat as the climax. some side quests but ones that make the main game more fun. for example giving you a new skill or useful item. and the side quests being about 20+ hours each... yes im picky with RPGs best ive played is the dragon quest series then final fantasy the kingdom hearts... all made by square enix but in the last few years theyve lost thier touch a bit and the rpgs to come out of them have not been half as good.

A good story.I don't care if it's linear or not, I don't care if I get to pick my morality or not. Both freedom and the lack of it have their advantages and disadvantages. I just want there to be interesting characters, a fun plot twist or two and a good setting to back it all up. I can even forgive a weak main plot if the other elements are good. For instance, Mass Effect 2 had a crappy main plot, but the setting was great, the characters were interesting and memorable and there were some nice twists to the various plots in the game.

A good choice of stats, skills, spells, items, builds, etc. Or to be more specific, meaningful choices. Quantity is welcome, but quality is what counts to me. I'd rather get to pick a handful of spells/powerups during the game and have each of them provide meaningful changes to my gameplay than spend thousands of arbitrary points on hundreds of levelups that only make my sword swing a bit harder. Nothing kills me inside like seeing "Your attacks do 1% more damage" or some such crap as a reward for leveling up.

I don't care if the world is open or not. Sandbox can be fun, but it also tends to mean a less structured narrative and a less focused experience. It's always a tradeoff. I don't care if I make my own character or use a predetermined one. Making your own tends to let you customize him more, but also makes him a blank slate, meaning that it's up to everyone else to be interesting. You'll always be a flat boring piece of bland. Again, tradeoffs.

In short, I want to have fun making my badarse character and guide him through some pretty scenery while surrounded by cool people.

Okay, that's a tad facetious, but they generally get it right. For me, Dragon Age Origins got everything right.
Though, frankly, I want every RPG game to include Fable II's sense of flair and variety in terms of character customisation. Character, narrative and dialogue's all well and good, but ultimately how well you've co-ordinated your killing outfit is where it's really at...

So that seems to be something I always want in RPG's: more customisation.

I like my RPG's to have the correct ammunition stored in them, so they are fully functional when fired.

Story that isn't cliche or dull, good writing.
Combat that isn't seen as an extra to the story, but is well developed and fun to play.
Characters you actually care about.
Lots of customisation, cool stuff, bad stuff, funny stuff, so long as there's loads of stuff.

for the main charachter to be customisable....yet stil feel like they can be an interesting charachter

like fallout 3 and NV and especially dragon age

I dont mind a voiced charachter...but PLEASE dont force me to play as one set charachter (like the witcher...and placescape torment but I supose that gets a pass for being awsome)

though to be honest asiide from ME I dont know if any games that are both voiced and give you the option

in other words Id rather be a silent lady than a gruff talking man

I like to be given a wide selection customization like the gears (weapons and armour) and sometimes the character apperances (I'm fine if they don't have character creation if it's a driven story rpg).
Also I like to save my game when ever I want to since I hate the limited savepoints if I encounter a problem which I cannot turn back to backtrack (resort to reloading a past savefile).

Sense of progression in both story and your character feeling more powerful as the game progressess

Well established world / universe / lore

Complex mechanics without being frustrating to manage

Main thing I look for in RPG's, is a wide and varied upgrade tree...
And a good story...

It's not much to ask for, but, so few RPG's seem to get it right...

Aside form all of the obvious things like decent combat, good story, variety in quests, interesting environments and engaging NPCs.

A properly open world. Most of my experience of RPGs comes from the Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3 and WoW. When I tried Guild Wars, I was really put off by the fact that I couldn't take a shortcut by just charging over the edge of a cliff to my destination. It made some of the landscapes pretty hard to navigate because what might initially have looked like a way round on my map turned out to be a slope which my monk couldn't navigate.

Lots to do. I was disappointed by how little there was to do in Oblivion. I paid £30 and I wanted more than 60 hours of gameplay for that (current benchmark set by Morrowind at £8 for 300+ hours). The saving grace of these games is that I can add more content with mods but it puts me off buying other RPGs because I have unreasonable standards when it comes to value and I doubt they will be met.

More variety in quests than "Do X to Y of Z". Kill 20 boars. Collect 12 machine parts. Rough up 8 peons. Smash 50 insect eggs. Punt 10 gnomes. I'm looking at you, WoW.

Grizzled ladies. I don't want to play as a dude but I don't want to play as a lacy chick either. I don't need to look at her tits all the time, I've got some of my own - give me some proper armour, please and keep your pretty waifs and your pigtails to yourself.

Good stealth. Because I like to explore but I'm not so good at actually fighting anything. It takes time out of the important business of sightseeing. And sometimes it's fun to sneak up on newbies, drop out of the shadows and COME TO THEIR AID, then vanish again. I'm like Batman, me.
