I like deep games with good writing that dont hold your hand. Something todays games are very lacking in. ( for the most part )
I agree with you i think game developers are to scared to think outside the box, and play it safe by sticking to what they know

Just something I haven't experienced yet. I'm not into playing a lot of the same genre; it gets dull.
Yes, yes something out of the ordinary does spice up a game very nicely

Most games lack the deep story that I want. Bioware tend to have it, but has been slacking in Mass Effect and Dragon Age 2.

I don't think the two are necessarily related though. You can have a deep FPS set in the middle east that has a strong plot and good writing, but that doesn't make it unique.

Similarly, you could set a game in the protestant reformation (interesting social simulation idea much?) and have terrible writing.

I wish more games would blend action and RPG well into a lengthy and engaging experience. It seems like so many times you either have a long rpg with lame combat or a short RPG with awesome combat. Maybe that's a result of just having to fight more in a longer game, but it seems like the two shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Sure, I love deep and interesting stories in games, but the thing that I miss the most in current gen games is the old fashioned FUN. Remember Serious Sam or any other game that said "fuck it" to realism and traded it off to pure fun. Nowadays, in my opinion, everything is too damn realistic. That's why Bulletstorm, personaly, was so nostalgic to me, because it focused on the fun factor.

Absolutely 110% story and storytelling. A game can have thousands eye candies but if it lacks good, solid, engaging and glamorous story, who cares? Some developers should really sit down and ask themselves question:
"Why people still play games like Planescape: Torment, The Longest Journey, first and second Broken Sword, both Syberias, Mask of the Betrayer, Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate II or Grim Fandango?" I highly doubt it's because of shiny DirectX 11.
