What do you name your RPG custom character?

It's been common practice for many years now for games to allow the player to name his/her character, especially in RPGs. Apart from Mass Effect and Zelda (I don't see the point in using any name other than Shepard and Link in those specific cases), I usually go for the same name.

I try to go for a meaningful name with an ancient Greek mythology undertone. Something with "depth" that says something, but at the same time remains appropriate regardless of what happens to me in the RPG.

I use to go by "Sisyphus". I seemed appropriately "doomed" in the case of Fallout 2, where I first used it.

However, I decided that it was too negative in connotation. After all, things didn't end well for Sisyphus (they didn't end at all, as a matter of fact).

I tried "Lovesfool", but it is too Shakespearian and it really doesn't suit most RPGs, since a doomed love is rarely the main theme, so I dropped in almost immediately.

These days, it's always "Phoenix". It is still a name with great depth, still based in ancient Greek mythology, but much more positive. It is suitable for Warrior or Mage class (maybe not so much for rogues, but you can't win them all). It is also a pun regarding loading from a previous save after each death...

What name do you use?

In Elder Scrolls games, "Punch-You" seems an appropriate enough name for an Argonian.

Depends on the game. Sometimes I'll do cool names, sometimes fun names... sometimes even offensive names.

Naming you main character something that doesn't fit the setting very well can be pretty funny. I named the protagonist in Persona 4 "Rufio Alfonzo" because it doesn't at all fit with Japanese naming conventions. Characters call me things like Rufio-kun. Lol.

depends on gender
male I'll usually go for Cero or Loki
female its always between Millenia or Millia

in MMO's those names are taken 98% of the time so I just hit random and go with that

In persona 3/4 i named my character , Light Yagami , from deathnote.

In dragon quest 8 i named my character FuckFace , and my monster arena team name was FaceFuckers . Made for some funny dialogue . " Please welcome , Fuckface and the FaceFuckers" or " What are you waiting for FuckFace?" "Don't just stand there Fuckface" . You get the idea .

First thing that comes to mind when thinking of the character or looking at them once I've made them.

I have two that I'm fond of, Corax and Bellerophon.
Corax is from 40k and Bellerophon is an ancient Greek hero.

Well, my science primary F:NV character was named Moss.

For female characters I usually go for Vara, Maya, sometimes Elysi. The last one is somewhat lame, Elysi as in Elysium.

Zoya or Zoe for female characters.

Ivan or Adrian for the males.

No specific reasons.

Depends. For something like Legend Of Zelda, it stays as the default name. For some of them I'll attempt to make some sort of "joke" of it, for example, in Dragon Age 2 I called my guy Toma (Hawke). For most games though it tends to be my name I put in.

Meh, if there is a random name option, I'll usually go for that. If not, I'll make something up that sounds not repulsive - Bereke, Gark, Felip, for example - just names I created right now. I'll try to match whatever the intended name should sound like, though - if I were to name an Imperial in an ES game, I'll go for Rekulus rather than the ones I mentioned before.

Occasionally, if I know the name would appear a lot, I'll go for something more juvenile and amusing, like making everybody call me Master or something along those lines.

In my Shin Megami Tensei characters last name is always Belmont or Morris (if there ins't enough letters for Belmont) because it sounds a kickass name for kicking monsters ass.

Most of the time, I just used my current make up fantasy names however with the upcoming Guild Wars 2 games, I trying to make my character names authentic (since each of the races has a perticular way of naming their people like Male Asura is a single sound base name that sound sharp while Norn names are base from Nordic mythos) while not base on real names (still want the names to be fantasy like).

Ivan Shepard...damn, that actually sounds cool. I can totally see my Shepard being called Ivan, he looks the part...somehow. For the record, he is only called Shepard - no first name. I was lazier than usual.

The Lamp, for comedic reasons usually. Everyone is looking toward the hero for guidance, and his name is The Lamp.
