What do you name your RPG custom character?

Most mmo's and games with custom names I generally name my characters the same thing. Cohr, I came up with it when creating a fighter for D&D fourth edition with my dad, I like it a lot and is adaptable, I can change it to slightly different versions for things such as fancy, Cohrval.

Also, I like to come up with a name based on what I'm playing. Such as Guild Wars 2. The first character I make will be named Cofernicus, he will be a sylvari Ranger.

Other than that, I tend to use a set list of names, whatever works I suppose.

Usually some variation of "Lith Astartes" for fantasy games, and "Theodore Sharpe" for more down to earth names.

But if it's a Star Wars game I always go with Dave Ken Obi, because why not?

If it's a voiced game (like most PC and console games) I tend to go for "Phill Atio".

If it's not voiced (like Pokemon) I go for "Oh Fuck!" and let the comedy work itself out naturally.

The Lamp, for comedic reasons usually. Everyone is looking toward the hero for guidance, and his name is The Lamp.

Ok that's pretty good. I might have to use that next time and spend the game quoting Anchorman.

For female characters I usually go for Vara, Maya, sometimes Elysi. The last one is somewhat lame, Elysi as in Elysium.

If that's an IT Crowd reference, I'll love you forever.

Wolfgang Gunkel.

As I mentioned in a recent X-COM topic here, Wolfgang Gunkel was the randomly-generated name of the first soldier my university roommates and I had success with in my first attempt at playing the game without having any prior knowledge on how to actually play it. He ended up sacrificing himself to take down the last three enemies in the sector with a hand grenade.

Since then, whenever I have the opportunity to name a character, I make a Wolfgang Gunkel. For a while I actually kept count, and I think I lost my count somewhere around Wolfgang Gunkel XXIV.

When I played SWTOR I made Gunkel my Legacy name. Wolfgang Gunkel was a grenade-focused Smuggler, and Wulfgang Gunkel was a tanking-spec'd Trooper.

In singleplayer RPGs, I tend to use my own name for male characters, and the name "Jill" for female characters.

In other games, mostly multiplayer, I tend to use a nickname of some sorts.

Since I'm a big fan of Japanese culture I tend to use Japanese names for my custom RPG character, even though he never looks remotely Asian. Utsumi Baku or Bakuu are my mainstays, although I may mix things up with alternate spellings (e.g. Ootsoomi, BaXu, Baqoo, Utsutsumi, Baku-baku, and et cetera).

It really depends on the game and type of character I'm going for to be honest. I have a couple that have been used more then once though, for a male fighter: 'Lance Steel' and for a female rogue: 'Roxie Razor'.

Other then that, it all depends on the character themselves.

My first FemShep was based on Mara Jade from Star Wars, and ever since then I've just had a bunch of redheaded women named Mara as PC's. Also, in Fallout I always give my characters the name Leibowitz as a reference to the book A Canticle for Leibowitz.

Mostly I use the first names of characters I've come up with, as appropriate to the game I'm playing.

So Commander Shepard (Fem), a marine in a sci-fi game, might be called Vale, after one of my female characters in a sci-fi setting who becomes a space-cop and eventually a marine.

An elf in Dragon Age might be called Kalis, after an elf from my fantasy book series. Similarly a human male would be called Alassar, a human female Phon and a dwarf male Jansen.

I'm not terribly creative, but I don't like using my own name.

Jack, in some cases, especially in Fallout (hence the name).

Persona cases have been Drake Kazuna, Hakuro Kuroda, and Evan Ramsey (in that order) for 1, 3, and 4.

Worms: Open Warfare 2 features Jackal's team of Stooge-voiced combatants, the Fire Me Boys, featuring,,,Nyuk Nyuk, Soitenly, Wise Guy, and Bullseye.

I'm aware that Worms ain't an RPG, but I thought it was funny.

If it is a Bioware game, or more specifically, a sci-fi Bioware game, then I name my female character "Bastable". For pretty much any other RPG, I just use my name. But sometimes Bastable.

OT: Whatever pops into my head at the time. My femShep is Chance; my dwarf in DA: Orgins is Glanana; my Fallout 3 chick is Hawke for some reason; in Skyrim my (female) Nord Warrior is Ronja Stormdottir[footnote]I DO use Ronja a lot; love that name.[/footnote] and my (male) Kahjiit thief is Dar'Rakha. Sometimes, especially if it's a free/cheap flash game or a game like Harvest Moon, I'm lazy and just write Finn/Fionn; my given name is Fionnuala which tends not to fit all the time.

Depending on how much space I get, my females are usually named Juana Killalot, Stealthalot or something completely unoriginal. If it's male I stole the name Goblecoq from.. someone. Croshaw? I honestly cant remember but it was the name they used in Psychonauts and it made me giggle like a little schoolgirl.

Just a side note. If this is in an MMO I'm not so crass, I'll use the surname Stormhawke with one of my usual character first names, Fo.. HEEEEY! no stealing my names, I see what you're doing you're trying to name camp me in GW2!

I like naming the rival in Pokemon Games a funny name, but never on my first playthrough. Then I go with the default name. In JRPG's where there is a default name, I'll never change it. And in Skyrim or any fallout/tes/other game where you have free choice to name your character and there isn't a default name I'll normally go with Locke, if its a boy, or Celes, if its a girl.
In Persona 3 I started panicking when I couldn't remember the default name and the only Japanese name I knew was Light Yagame which wouldn't have been too fitting, so I just put in a bunch of random letters. Sounds kinda japanese-y though.
