A cleric.
In fantasy single player games, I will play as a healing character using a mace & shield, even if its more than difficult to heal my oh so idiotic companions.
In sci-fi single player games I just tend to go with whatever can burn and/or explode the living hell out of the enemies
In modern single player games you dont really get a choice. More often than not you are a random soldier shooting people.

In fantasy multiplayer games I tend to lean towards some kind of "Melee Healer" or Shapeshifter, atleast when theyre available. Otherwise I just tend to go with the guy soaking up damage.
In sci-fi multiplayer games I just go for the medic or the afore mentioned burning/exploding guy.
In modern multiplayer games I try to go for some kind of field medic but in quite a few they arent available. In that case I just go for whatever the hell I feel like. It tends to involve C4.

In Fallout type games I usually go for a combo of ranged and stealth with a few support skills. In fantasy games I usually go all out berserker if its possible.

Fallout 3? I went for a mid-long range small guns specialist, I used mainly my chinese assault rifle, backed up with grenades. Then I got to the end of the game, and also did a few add-on campaigns, and instantly switched to owning squishy ghoul faces with giant burning green balls of plasma and magnetized microfusion cells from the gauss rifle, which might as well be called the 'Grenade sniper rifle'.

As for my character, I planned to play him neutral, but ended up good anyway, given that I felt a bit guilty about the idea of murdering people for pocket change. My tag skills were small guns, repair, and medicine, a nice and healthy balance for a character that might be handy for longer expeditions, and it came off rather well.

Also, he was the most stylish character ever, combat armor and a shady hat. The peak of post-apocalyptic fashion.

Also a bit of a loose canon. I find paradise falls, learn it's a slaver base, and instantly slaughter anyone who takes up arms against me, cutting them in two with a spray from my machine gun.

I'll always pick either a stealthy or long ranged fighter option the first time I play through a game with different classes. Infiltrator in Mass Effect, Rogue in WoW, Siren in Borderlands (for the omgsneakyrunaway! Phase step), Vanquisher in Torchlight, etc. I guess I prefer not giving whatever I'm killing the chance to kill me first.

I definitely make sure the fight is over before it has begun. If I can lay a trap, I do that. If I can toy with them, I do that. If I can save money on repairs by not letting them get a hit in, I do that. Being sneaky is more efficient/economical and often more fun than standing toe to toe or barrel to barrel.

I prefer a lurking character with devastating stealth kills and one hit one kill area effect magic.

Here is my Fallout 3 character:

As you can probably tell from that... I prefer sneaky types who surprise their foes through ambush, sniping, and infiltration. Rarely do I ever actually involve myself in direct conflict. My personality is very much the same way. :)
I can also tell that you play Fallout on the PC and mod the crap out of it.
Yup yup! :)
Except the hair colour (I usually go for red), this is exactly the way I play.
And when it comes to mods, Fook2 and FOSE are also something that I consider a must have.
Before I uninstalled fallout 3 I had 4,3 GB mods to it, that is truly to "mod the crap out of it".
