I believe with us building on the engines we have now (Unreal and Crytek, etc.) we will one day have games that look real, along with less shooters and a stronger online market that supports indie developers and games.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I see publishers really pushing hard for the cloud gaming but it not really taking hold and them eventually backing off

I want to see more voxel based sandbox games a la Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. Considering the sheer number of minecraft-inspired games we're seeing, that's a definite possibility IMO.

That. I see that.

Lots of brown. Lots of iron sights. Lots of grinding. Lots of subscription fees. Lots of aggressive and glitchy DRM. LOTS of sequels.

Pretty much this, not sure about that DRM thing though.

Developers will soon realize they have reached the ceiling on creating brown environments and move on to enhancing said environments with the next big thing: brown noise.

In all seriousness though, I don't see shooters breaking any major ground.

Gaming as a whole seem to be making a turn towards attempting to draw the casual crowd with a lot of social networking connections. Call of Duty Elite, Battlefield's thing, Ubisoft and EA's social stuff.

Pretty soon we'll be seeing Call of Dutyville.

I see us having to choose between simple browser based casual games and absurdly overpriced hardcore games.
It?s already started. Only a small portion of the ps2 owners I know ever upgraded to a ps3 or 360.

To be honest though, we as gamers kinda brought some of this upon ourselves.

Don't get me wrong, the "bro-gamer" crowd that goes nuts over every new Call of Duty, Madden, and Halo release isn't guilt-free.

But look what happens whenever a developer tries to take a risk in creating a new IP for us to enjoy. More often than not it's dead on arrival, regardless of whether or not it's a good game, because it's different, and thus not getting our support. So now publishers don't like different, and developers get stuck developing the same stuff over and over again.

Y'know how well Halo sold? Remember when everyone said that Halo 3 was going to be the last of the main-series Halo games? And now they've just announced not one, but THREE new Halo sequels... why? Because Halo sold well. Why make a new IP, when you can just resurrect one that's a surefire hit regardless of content or quality?

We as a whole showed publishers that we don't want new experiences, we just want more and more of the same. The publishers listened.

Serious time now. And truthfully, I have no idea what I see in the future of games. I only know what I hope to see.

Namely, less iron-sight-filled brown-environmented 'gritty' war shooters, and less space marines.

Beyond that generic answer... I have no idea.

Games like Battlefield 3 and Guild Wars 2. Or at least what they are supposed to be like. Now that we are going to get past the graphics phase it's time for some seriously awesome gameplay and detail. :p
